Warsmith Uveron
So I am preparing to paint a pair of Renegade knights to join my Iron Warriors army. Normally I use both Nulm Oil and Earthshade to paint my tanks… Can anyone recommend a good way to make washes of a similar nature, but that may run a touch cheaper? Also in the past I have used weathering pigments from Secret Weapon Miniatures, I have had some great results, but I have used up my Weathering Pigment fixer, and I was wondering if anyone knew of another source of this magical fluid. Razblood
How to make your own guide - http://thepaintingcorps.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/lbursleys-wash-recipe-released.html and accompanying video tut - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEkMnP6p08I You can use alternates for the matt medium & Flow Aid, I use W&N Galleria Medium & Flow Improver and it works great. Just be aware that they will settle between uses so drop some lava beads/glass beads in as agitators and it'll reduce how much you'll need to shake them I'd avoid lead/metal beads as you will end up with toxic/rusty washes. As for savings, I've made 19 x 20ml bottles of wash in pretty much any colour I could possibly need and still have enough medium left to double that, flow improver has barely been used too. As for your pigment fixer question - From what I understand you can just hit it with a spray of gloss/satin/matt varnish and that'll do the job, but there are other with a better knowledge in this regard. Hope that helps. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323284-alternate-washes-and-pigmant-fixer/#findComment-4422923 Share on other sites
LutherMax
I've used Les's home made wash recipe - they're pretty good if a bit complicated to make... You can also make them simply mixing gloss varnish (e.g. Humbrol Gloss Clear) and acrylic ink. They'll be glossy but you can apply matte varnish once dry. As for pigment fixer lots of companies produce it - Mig is good, you should be able to get it online easily. GalaxyChief
I have had good results using denatured alcohol for fixing pigments. Just make sure you seal the model before applying any of it to the paint.
