Iron hands clan/spot colors?

Recommended Posts

As I paint up my Iron Hands for ETL and general army building, I need some spot colors.

Do the various clans have colors associated with them as well as the symbols (from the FW transfer sheet)?

I know 40k GW standard IH have white spot colors and I've seen red as a common clan color, but I swear I've seen light blues and even purples as spot colors on Iron Hands before.

Is there a guide to which clans use which colors?  Or is that not a thing?

I'm trying to be fluffy with my shattered Legion.

There's no guide to speak of. Red is popular with folks playing Clan Morragul but it is only specifically attested to from some art showing Autek Morr's personal 'Bloodwrought' honour guard. It looks pretty great though.

There's a Clan Atraxii who bear the same icon as one of the clan companies of the 40k Sons of Medusa. They're not a second founding chapter so it's hard to draw a direct link in the same way as with some of the Ultramarine companies and their post-heresy successors, but perhaps your background could make a connection? It could be an excuse to incorporate some elements of bright green. Gotta be careful not to make them look like Dark Angels, mind.

Yeah red is used pretty widespread by IH players for a variety of Clans, although the only official representation of this is for Clan Morragul - there is also some artwork in Retribution showing a Xth Legionary with partially grey plating, which represents components freshly manufactured - if you wanted to go down the path of Iron Hands augmenting damaged armour in this fashion, having dark iron MkIII plate mixed with grey MkIV components would look awesome

Another way of introducing interesting spot colours is to use FW's official IH paint scheme, which has an oilyeffect, with patches of green & purple across the armour:
