Zone Mortalis board

Recommended Posts

Hi there, so I've been interested in the zone mortalis boards for a while, came close to winning one at a decent price on eBay but was beaten in the dying seconds a few months ago.

I have just started actually playing 40k (well, 30k really) again recently and so I decided to have a crack at making my own board. I have never undertaken a project of this size, although the components when you break them down aren't that complex so I wasn't to daunted by the task ahead.

I'm working on a blog post about construction so I'm not going to go into that here, just post up a few pics of the project to date and hopefully get some feedback from you guys.

So without further ado, enjoy

Thanks for the feedback.

Major Gilbear I plan to add some vents and pipe work, as well as any Aquila I can get hold of. I don't think it's essential to cover the walls in detail but to use some simple items to create interest. For instance I am adding additional sections to the flat walls to create recesses along the length of the walls.

So yeah, much like the floor I'm keeping it simple in terms of detail, but, hopefully making what I do add effective from a visual perspective.

If you're open to suggestions, I'd maybe consider some buttresses and reinforcing strips. Some thin card with a few rivets, and Zip ties are good for these, and are easy/cheap to do.

For some slightly bigger buttresses you could use thin card folded over and hole-punched along its length - cheap and has a nice level of detail without being too fussy.

A few really big wall vents are also a great idea, and very 40k/Aliens!

A buddy of mine back in 3rd, when making his walls and fortifications, would get large sheets of plasticard or what have you - sometimes foam, depending - and just shoot the :cuss out of them with his airsoft gun. So when they got broken down into components for the board, they'd taken some heat and had that "this here buttress has seen some things" feel to it.

Dunno if that strikes your fancy, but it always amused me.

"Howd you get that effect, Tony?"

  "I shot it."

  *silence*

Testing out the cable ties idea, going to work a treat I think. Thanks for the suggestion buddy, would never have considered those myself.

Got the full floor built and painted now.

Need to tweak the paint job a little as I seem to have changed (unwittingly) the paint job a bit half way though.

Over all I'm pleased though, now to get cracking on the wall sections.

First detailed and primed wall section.

I have purchased some large oval wall lights from zinge to add a little extra detail but they haven't arrived yet.

Impressive work. If you're ordering Zinge, I swear by their piping and rivet strips for adding detail to ZM boards. Their bulkhead doors are quite good as well.

Thanks very much. I've just searched and purchased some rivets from eBay, cheers for the heads up buddy.

Those cable ties really add some much needed detail to the wall sections, which are super straight. They're really well done. Looking forward to seeing this project unfold further :)

Good progress, well done! I'm also glad that the zip tie idea was helpful! :)

If you're after some big 'ol rivets, try getting some dried split lentils from your local grocer. Any bag of these has enough to last you your whole life, so don't just buy the cheapest pack you can find - buy the ones that look in best condition (i.e., regular size, not broken, etc). Whether it's 50p or £2, it's not likely to break anyone's bank!

Cut some strips of cereal packet (about 4mm wide is good), glue these strips to your walls, and then glue the split lentils along them as big rivets. I would seal them with some gloss paint or varnish (raid your cellar/garage/shed/utility room!), and then paint as usual when dry.

Another tip that can add some interesting shapes to your games (especially in bigger rooms/areas) is to use things like Pringles tubes and Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate tubs. After washing these out, carefully cut the tube/tub down to a suitable height and glue it upside-down onto a scenic base (so the flat bottom is now the top). These decorate well with the buttresses / zip ties / riveted strips as I have previously described, and lend some differently-shaped obstacles to rooms.

I would avoid using drinks lids and such for much more than making barrels from though, as they are very hard to disguise well enough (i.e., most of these are so recognisable, that they always look like what they were).

Finally, see if you can get a handful of old Space Lego bits. You may need to cut some of these up and/or file off the studs, but parts like the ribbed flexible tubing and the steering wheels make for great detailing items on your scenery (as armoured cables and wheel-valves on huge pipes respectively). Some of the Technic parts are also good, like the pulley wheels for airlock doors.

Been beavering away, all wall sections are built, I'm now adding detail.

Going on holiday soon so won't be able to get much done so took the opportunity to start painting a section.

the paint job is very much a work in progress I must say but I like where it's going so far.

I want to get a lower deck, dirty feel without srepping into a Nurgle plague ship feel.

Appreciate any feedback, and thanks for all the comments so far .

Looking very nice - I like the colours you chose. :)

Do you think you could outline a step by step on how you made thinks like the floor panels.

Floor Panels:

1) Glue a wire/plastic mesh to the board section.

2) Glue squares of card onto the mesh.

3) (Optional) Glue a few card circles onto some of the squares, or use a few bigger card squares, etc., for variety.

That is looking fantastic!

Thanks very much, I have blogged a build log for this on my site, link in my footer.

The floor boards are pretty much as described by MG above, the blog gives details on dimensions etc, hope you manage to give it a read.

Cheers.

I think this is looking great!

My only comment (and it applies to the official ZM too) is that it would be nice if the wall sections enable to make "plausible layouts" rather than a labyrinth. I mean, most space stations and ships are laid out in a logical manner afterall, whereas the official ZM is just... Well, totally random and illogical. Rooms would have features (aka "functions" and suitable scenery) in them to provide interest and cover. Are you planning these features by chance? :)
