With Courage & Determination – Ultramarines & Death Guard

Hi all,

My friend Venator and I have been doing 40k for a number of years, and we’ve taken the plunge into Horus Heresy in the last few months. Unfortunately, I’m what my friends like to call a bit of a “hobby butterfly”, and haven’t managed to paint more than a squad from any one army in about 12 years (ouch). To that end, I’ve been bullied into setting up a painting log where we can both post updates from our respective legions.

I’ll be painting Ultramarines and Venator will be doing Death Guard. We have an agreement where we’re going to paint a 3000 point list each with no Lords of War; we’re not allowed to start any other projects or just to give up. The penalty for giving up or starting another project is severe – that person has to buy the other a 10 man troops choice with Legion-specific shoulder pads (again, ouch).

I’m a bit of a slow painter, so expect more updates from Venator than me!

Anyway, without further ado, here’s my test model - He still needs varnishing and transfers applying!

Thanks!

The best I've ever managed to paint is a 1k Blood Angels list which took me almost a year.  Given that we are each aiming for a 3k list, I've decided to try a different style of painting which will hopefully be a bit quicker!

Without a further ado - here is my first test mini. I'm quite happy with him, but I think the chipping is bit over the top.  I used a silver for the chips, but I think I will use a brown in the future and definitely scale it back.  It is my first time using oil washes as well so let me know what you think!

Nova- you may paint slow but that is a stunningly clean paint job. Bravo mate!

Venator- that is a stunningly grimy paint job. I think with weathering and battle damage it comes down to personal preference. I actually think that much battle damage is spot on especially for Death Guard.

I would be glad to play against armies painted like this. Also these 2 forces across the table from each other would look amazing.

Looking forward to seeing more

Great jobs both of you !  Clean UM's versus grimy DG... !  I suspect these two forces will look pretty awesome on the battlefield going head to head.

Venator, if you don't mind sharing, I'd really like to hear how you were able to get such a gritty look all over the model - not just stippled but scratched too?

Good luck with this thread, I'll be keeping my eye on it :)

Thanks for the kind words brothers.  Here is today's progress.

I've primed and base coated all the individual components.  I've blocked in all the colours on the helmets.  I now need to mask the green, before touching up the white.  All that is left to do then is sponge chipping, a gloss coat and then oil washes!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I'm up to 5 Ultramarines painted now...

You may notice that one marine doesn't have a back pack... He's the squad's proud Vexilla bearer who had an unfortunate accident. I've since decided to scrap the BaC Vexilla in favour of more robust 40k Space Marine backpack banner. I'll take another photo when the reconstructive surgery is complete! I'm a little disappointed that the photos seem to have muted the edge highlighting of the blues, so I'm going to have to sort out a better set up for taking images.

I've also decided that I'm going to assemble my full 3,000 point list and then paint it in sections. This will allow me to get some games in with it to keep my motivated on the painting front!

Here's the list if anyone is interested:

Cheers!

Here is todays progress!  Just await a matt coat.

I've just started work on 5 Deathshroud terminators.  I have to say I am quite disappointed with them compared to the Mk III.  The detail seems fuzzy and as soon as the primer gone the panel lines have virtually disappeared.  I know its not the primer as it was bad before they were sprayed.  Has anyone else had this problem?
