NovaScotius
Hi all, My friend Venator and I have been doing 40k for a number of years, and we’ve taken the plunge into Horus Heresy in the last few months. Unfortunately, I’m what my friends like to call a bit of a “hobby butterfly”, and haven’t managed to paint more than a squad from any one army in about 12 years (ouch). To that end, I’ve been bullied into setting up a painting log where we can both post updates from our respective legions. I’ll be painting Ultramarines and Venator will be doing Death Guard. We have an agreement where we’re going to paint a 3000 point list each with no Lords of War; we’re not allowed to start any other projects or just to give up. The penalty for giving up or starting another project is severe – that person has to buy the other a 10 man troops choice with Legion-specific shoulder pads (again, ouch). I’m a bit of a slow painter, so expect more updates from Venator than me! Anyway, without further ado, here’s my test model - He still needs varnishing and transfers applying! http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z441/NovaScotius/Test%20Mini%205_zpsywobmv4b.jpg http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z441/NovaScotius/Test%20Mini%204_zpsorjbrjfy.jpg Thanks! Venator
The best I've ever managed to paint is a 1k Blood Angels list which took me almost a year. Given that we are each aiming for a 3k list, I've decided to try a different style of painting which will hopefully be a bit quicker! Without a further ado - here is my first test mini. I'm quite happy with him, but I think the chipping is bit over the top. I used a silver for the chips, but I think I will use a brown in the future and definitely scale it back. It is my first time using oil washes as well so let me know what you think! http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0363_zpsvrtv4ixk.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323422-with-courage-determination-%E2%80%93-ultramarines-death-guard/#findComment-4427178 Share on other sites

Ironwithout
Nova- you may paint slow but that is a stunningly clean paint job. Bravo mate! Venator- that is a stunningly grimy paint job. I think with weathering and battle damage it comes down to personal preference. I actually think that much battle damage is spot on especially for Death Guard. I would be glad to play against armies painted like this. Also these 2 forces across the table from each other would look amazing. Looking forward to seeing more Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323422-with-courage-determination-%E2%80%93-ultramarines-death-guard/#findComment-4427221 Share on other sites

disease
Coincidentally, this is almost the exact same scenario as Brother Captain Arkhan (Ultramarines, Ravens) and I (Death Guard). I really look forward to where you take this, the DG / Ultra rivalry is strong over here too! infyrana
Great jobs both of you ! Clean UM's versus grimy DG... ! I suspect these two forces will look pretty awesome on the battlefield going head to head. Venator, if you don't mind sharing, I'd really like to hear how you were able to get such a gritty look all over the model - not just stippled but scratched too? Good luck with this thread, I'll be keeping my eye on it :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323422-with-courage-determination-%E2%80%93-ultramarines-death-guard/#findComment-4427520 Share on other sites

Venator
Thanks for the kind words brothers. Here is today's progress. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0365_zpsiaejybv2.jpg I've primed and base coated all the individual components. I've blocked in all the colours on the helmets. I now need to mask the green, before touching up the white. All that is left to do then is sponge chipping, a gloss coat and then oil washes! NovaScotius
Well I'm up to 5 Ultramarines painted now... http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z441/NovaScotius/Dami%20Squad_zpscpjxratz.jpg http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z441/NovaScotius/Tactical%20Squad_zpshij8nyut.jpg http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z441/NovaScotius/Tactical%20Squad%201_zps12tecarl.jpg You may notice that one marine doesn't have a back pack... He's the squad's proud Vexilla bearer who had an unfortunate accident. I've since decided to scrap the BaC Vexilla in favour of more robust 40k Space Marine backpack banner. I'll take another photo when the reconstructive surgery is complete! I'm a little disappointed that the photos seem to have muted the edge highlighting of the blues, so I'm going to have to sort out a better set up for taking images. I've also decided that I'm going to assemble my full 3,000 point list and then paint it in sections. This will allow me to get some games in with it to keep my motivated on the painting front! Here's the list if anyone is interested: +++ HH - Ultramarines Planned List (2998pts) +++++ Legiones Astartes: Crusade Army List (Age of Darkness) (2998pts) +++ HQ (768pts) +Legion Praetor (653pts) [Cataphractii Terminator Armour with Combi-bolter and Power Weapon, Combi-Weapon, Paragon Blade]Legion Terminator Command Squad [Cataphractii Terminator Armour with Combi-bolter and Power Weapon, Chainfist, 3x Combi-weapon, Land Raider Phobos, 3x Legion Space Marine Chosen, Plasma Blaster, 3x Power Fist]Master of Signal - Legion Centurion (115pts) [Legatine Axe, Power Armour]Consul [Master of Signal]+ Troops (690pts) +Legion Tactical Squad (230pts) [Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier, 9x Legion Tactical Space Marines, Take an additional Chainsword or Combat Blade]Legion Tactical Sergeant [Artificer Armour, Power Fist]Legion Tactical Squad (230pts) [Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier, 9x Legion Tactical Space Marines, Take an additional Chainsword or Combat Blade]Legion Tactical Sergeant [Artificer Armour, Power Fist]Legion Tactical Squad (230pts) [Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier, 9x Legion Tactical Space Marines, Take an additional Chainsword or Combat Blade]Legion Tactical Sergeant [Artificer Armour, Power Fist]+ Elites (555pts) +Invictarus Suzerain Squad (555pts) [8x Invictarus Suzerains, Land Raider Phobos, 2x Thunderhammer]+ Heavy Support (985pts) +Fulmentarus Terminator Squad (635pts) [Cyclone Missile Launcher, 4x Fulmentarus Terminator, Land Raider Phobos, Power Fist]Fulmentarus Decurion [Power Fist]Legion Sicaran Battle Tank (175pts) [Lascannons]Legion Sicaran Battle Tank (175pts) [Lascannons]+ Legion +Legion Astartes [Loyalist, XIII: Ultramarines] I've decided to include all the units that I wanted to have, regardless of how good they are (or not, as the case may be!). Once I hit 3k, I'll keep adding units which will allow me to change up my list each time I play. Cheers! Soric
The Ultras are looking good Nova. I've found that lighting can play a huge effect on whether your highlights are picked up in photos or not. Can't wait to see more of your Ultras being finished. Venator
Here is todays progress! Just await a matt coat. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0415_zpsqw6vtnbq.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_1973_zpson5oowlt.jpeg I've just started work on 5 Deathshroud terminators. I have to say I am quite disappointed with them compared to the Mk III. The detail seems fuzzy and as soon as the primer gone the panel lines have virtually disappeared. I know its not the primer as it was bad before they were sprayed. Has anyone else had this problem? http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_4194_zpsqvhpj6np.jpeg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323422-with-courage-determination-%E2%80%93-ultramarines-death-guard/#findComment-4438926 Share on other sites
