The Mourning of the Mournival - A XVI Legion army blog

Hi all, it's quite healthy to take inspiration and share with the community, so I thought I would share the beginning of my Sons of Horus force. Currently building in parallel SoH and Emperor's Children as I love the flair of those two legions and they work quite a lot together in the fluff.

When loyalists, the Sons of Horus will be led by Loken and Minos, a founding member of the Mournival and Justaerin who perished in a combined action of the XVI and III Legions during the defense of Tranquility and was sent to rest in his ancestral home of Carthage in Terra. Secretly though, he was entombed by the Emperor as a Leviathan dreadnought as a means of having an agent capable of taking down Horus in combat should such dire need arise. As such, he kept his old livery and the secret of his vow, managing to convert a small contingent of Justaerin to his cause after the fall of the Warmaster in Davin.

When rebels, they will be lead by Maloghurst and Little Horus, with the occasional support of Abaddon, representing the attach to Molech.

When pre Isstvan III, all the mourival will be together along with Torgaddon as the brotherhood of the four is something that really was epic in the novels to me, and the conversions of the four along with Horus and Maloghurst will be the my army's centerpieces.

Comments are very welcome.

Green Painting Recipe:

1. Prime black

2. Basecoat Lupercal Green + Abaddon Black (1:1)

3. Basecoat again with Lupercal Green leaving the recesses and the counter-zenithal parts with the previous coat

5. 45 degree angle highlight with Sons of Horus Green

6. Spot highlight with Sons of Horus Green + White Scars White (1:1)

7. Wash with Agrax Earthshade + Nuln Oil + Water (1:1:2)

8. Edge highlight with Sons of Horus Green + White Scars White (1:2)

I´m going to try the following though for my next miniatures. It sounds equally complex but it makes the process much simpler by determining at the first stages where the shadow and light contrasts will happen:

1. Prime black

2. Basecoat Lupercal Green + Abaddon Black (1:1)

3. Basecoat again with Lupercal Green leaving the recesses and the counter-zenithal parts with the previous coat

4. 'Sketch' where the highlights will be with Typhon Ash

5. Redo the basecoat with Lupercal Green

6. Highlight with Sons of Horus Green blending to the areas with highlights

7. Final spot highlight with Sons of Horus Green + White Scars White (1:1)

8. Edge highlight with Sons of Horus Green + White Scars White (1:2)

Thanks gents! You´re right Isinfier, but that´s the Torgaddon one, maybe i labeled wrong. Horus Aximand sword is Libertas from Nathaniel Garro with the libertas script taken away. It needed to look regal since it´s a weapon crafted by Horus himself!

It's a great use of the head. I have to say, your maloghurst is exactly how I see him in the novels. Sinister and malicious. That free hand too. Dang dude.

Minos is very striking next to all of them as well. It's quite nice. What's the backstory? I know what was above but is he a "cannon" character?

Thanks Jimbo, when I saw Narik I thought "Maloghurst" instantly since he looks brutal, disfigured, full of respirator aids and a bit broken (it´s hard to appreciate in the picture but the face sculpt is full of scars).

On Minos, the only cannon thing about him in the fluff is that he was one of the deceased members of the Mournival, potentially one of the original four along with Torgaddon and Abaddon. He appears in the scene in which Loken is inducted into the Mournival in 'Horus rising', when Torgaddon recites the names of the nine dead members of the Mournival at the lake, which he seems to do in order as he names Hastur the last (the one Loken replaces). The first two names are Keyshen and Minos, and as Torgaddon and Abaddon are known to have been two of the four founding members, I inferred these two where the last of the original four.

The rest of the resurrection as a fall back plan I made up for the fluff of my force when used as loyalists, as I felt the name Minos did sound Terran, Greek in concrete since he is the one of the sons of Europa in the Greek myths, whilst Keyshen does definitively sound Cthonian. Also it helps tie in with the Fluff of my Emperor´s Children loyalists since the death of Minos in a combined action in the defense of Tranquility makes my EC Lord Commander get pissed with Eidolon and the lack of acknowledgement that they messed up.

I got distracted with the head question, and I actually forgot to comment about the pictures and the miniatures, silly me tongue.png

Then again, there is not much left to say that hasn't been said laugh.png , awesome paintjob, awesome conversions (the amount of bits from different kits and characters Aximand has is astonishing, and the fact that they combine so well will make me take a look again at some models that didn't catch my eye the first time).

Regarding Minos, the paintjob is fantastic, looks absolutely great. Just one minor question: considering he was a Luna Wolf, as he died before the name change to Sons of Horus, wouldn't it had been more fluff-appropiate for him to bear the original legion symbol, instead of the Horus Eye? Just curious wether it was just a aesthetic choice (the eye probably fits better the rest of the paintjob than the Wolf symbol would do) or if you have some fluff about it.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to see the Mournival members painted, they look badass drool.gif

Thank you all so much. Being unable to actually play or interact with the community since I don´t have time for gaming groups, this online community is my main source of feedback plus motivation to keep on painting!

I love your conversions and the paint scheme on that Leviathan.

What's your recipe for SoH green?
That's exactly the shade of sea green I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks Freakiq, I posted a guide to the green in the first post so it can remain there visible!

That was the main reason to chop up the legion standard bearer, if you look closely, the symbol on his chest is the 'alternate' eye of horus with two wolf heads flanking it, which I thought it´s a nice throwback to the Luna Wolves.

You´re probably right though, but I always loved the Eye of Horus symbol, and when it was awarded to Horus it was actually called the Eye of Terra, I believe, plus it´s one of the most ancient wards of protection ever used by mankind.

What I might do from your suggestion though is get a hold of a Luna Wolves transfer sheet and decorate a bit his lower legs with an image or two!

So happy to see these guys over here! They 'almost' tempt me to do some SOH!  Little Horus is one of my favourite conversions ever! You just need to get all 4 of the Mournival painted up....

I think Minos would look great with a little Luna Wolf iconography!

I might grab the luna wolves decals in the next FW open day then! And thanks mate, yes I plan to get Aximand and Torgaddon painted either immediately after i totally finish my EC jetbikes and champion or when I also finish the 18 EC tacticals since I´m on a EC roll lately and that would give me a 1250 force fully painted!

Oh, didn't know that about the Eye, I always assumed its widespread use came with the name change. I'm not very informed about symbols, so thanks for the info thumbsup.gif

I think Minos is fine as it is, but not gonna dissuade anyone from trying new things, I'll keep an eye on this thread (temptation to start a small LW/SoH force rising...)

Not trying to convince you or anything, but with the Sons of Horus you could easily field all their legion specific units as an allied detachment:

- HQ: Maloghurst with command squad since SoH get their own one

- Troops: Reavers

- Elites: Justaerin

That banner is incredible! Seriously one of the most impressive centrepieces I've ever seen!

I'm more of a fan of a darker green shade on SoH, but the way you've done the turquoise looks great. If I had a criticism to make, it's that the black on the helms doesn't look right to me, but that could be an artifact of the distance from the camera or the turquoise-and-black marines against a turquoise-and-black background. Could you get a more of a close-up picture of the line marines against a neutral backing?
