Jackalwolf
Hi all, Just was wondering about my SoH list, since I really want to make it as different as possible from my EC and based around the spear tip concept, so I was planning to run the Long March Rite of War with Maloghurst to enable veterans as reavers as units and make them scoring, and then use Kharybdis and Dreadclaw drop pods to deliver my payload. With that in mind though, I´m having a bit of an issue with Mal. The perfect unit for him to tag along with is regular cataphractii terminators, since they hide his inability to run and swipe advance and benefit the most from his fearless standard, since justaerin won´t have issues with being swept. Issue though is space, since he doesn´t fit with 5 terminators in a dreadclaw (that would be my ideal delivery system) and my big unit for a Kharybdis are 10 justaerin, which utilise better it´s space than 5 terminators and Mal. Another option is using a Storm Eagle, but then again that comes with a hefty price tag and the fact that it might not show up turn 2 (even considering SoH reserve roll bonus), since if I go for an all aerial/drop list, I don´t want to leave a lonely damocles on the table on turn one since it would be too vulnerable and make too little sense. So how you guys would recommend to deliver him along a unit? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323881-best-maloghurst-delivery-unit/ Share on other sites
Charlo
Well why not Reavers in a dreadclaw? Or outflanking? He could come on with a big squad, combi-weapon something to death then prevent them running next turn. Jackalwolf
Reavers would be unable to run or swipe units, impairing their mobility post-deployment and their capability of swiping their victims. Charlo
Ah of course - I forgot about Mal's movement restriction. One use for him in the long march is simply putting him in a heavy weapon squad in your deployment zone - he keeps them (and maybe others) from falling back and anchors your backline :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323881-best-maloghurst-delivery-unit/#findComment-4440641 Share on other sites
Caillum
^ This. And if he is your Warlord, he is Scoring too! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323881-best-maloghurst-delivery-unit/#findComment-4440654 Share on other sites
Jackalwolf
That, sir, is brilliant. Plus he turns the squad into scoring since he is a scoring unit by himself, and protection since he´s very capable against MEQ. I´ll put a list in the army list section based around Mal coordinating a plan from the rear guard with his support squads and command tanks and the rest of the army spear tipping. Would greatly appreciate your advice on fluffiness-performance. Jackalwolf
I´d greatly appreciate the community feedback on this potential list for my SoH. I want to make an all comer list that represents the XVIth attacking some planet (Molech is the perfect example) using their typical spear tip tactics: brutal, decisive, fast. Without further ado: +++ Sons of Horus - Talon of Horus (1999pts) +++ + HQ (240pts) + Damocles Command Rhino (100pts) Maloghurst the Twisted (140pts) Rite: Pride of the Legion + Troops (959pts) + Justaerin Terminator Squad (394pts) 7x Justaerin Terminators 7x Combi-Weapon 1x Chainfist Legion Terminator Squad (310pts) Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod 1x Chainfist 3x Power Fist Sergeant with Thunderhammer Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (255pts) Tactics: Furious Charge Legion Rhino Armoured Carrier 9x Legion Veteran Space Marines Veteran Sergeant with Artificer Armour and Power Weapon + Heavy Support (800pts) + Legion Heavy Support Squad (165pts) 4x Legion Space Marines with Missile Launchers Sergeant with Augury Scanner Legion Kharybdis Assault Claw (260pts) Leviathan Siege Dreadnought Talon (375pts) Legion Dreadnought Drop Pod Armoured Ceramite Leviathan Siege Drill Phosphex Discharger Gamestyle: Maloghurst joins the heavy support squad deployed besides the Damocles Rhino, which will be able to carry them later on for added mobility. Both fire from the backfield. The veteran tacticals on Rhino give them support initially and launch to grab mid field objectives later in the game. As for the speartip, turn one has the Kharybdis and DDP crashing right between enemy lines and deploying the terrible payload of 7 justaerin and 1 leviathan (painted in justaerin colors for added fluffiness), and blast to pieces with death dealers, turn one increased BS and the melta guns on the Leviathan any armored vehicle that´s an immediate threat. The Damocles then throws his orbital bombardment in some infantry blob, and the heavy squad focuses their fire along with it. Turn 2 the justaerin and Leviathan charge behind enemy lines whilst the Damocles advances to give cover to the Veteran Tacticals and serve as a mobile barricade until it´s destroyed. The vets advance and start positioning on midfield. Then the dreadclaw with the cataphractii terminators deploys in the midfield to support the tacticals in conquering no mans land or supports the justaerin assault. Maloghurst will hold the backfield to prevent any deep strikers wiping in CC a defenseless unit like the heavy support. Options: I could drop the Damocles and add some more justaerin and a melta lance to the leviathan to increase alpha strike shock power. I could replace the Cataphractii in the dreadclaw by some reavers so I can take the Long March ROW and make my heavy support squad relentless. Thoughts? Charlo
Hmm I think Pride isn't really necessary here, I'd go for long march for sure. A lot more fluffy and means you can benefit from those re-rolls. When you just Justaeran, I don't think normal terms are really necessary - and Reavers are allowed as Troops with Mal. Damocles isn't strictly necessary either, you already re-roll 1's due to being SoH and by the looks of the list it'll just be one claw of something that isn't arriving guaranteed. No points into this equation but i'd aim for something like: HQ: -Mal Troops: -Reaver Squad for CC in Claw, Combi-Melta would be good here, go for CC punch too. -Vet Squad for Shooting in Rhino, give them sniper and some heavy bolters - but feel free to load up the sarge too, you can still shoot sniping pistols and assault heavy bolters and charge into combat. Elites: -Justaeran as they are Heavy: -Leviathan as it is -Kharybdis as it is -Heavy Squad with a different weapon, missiles are severely lack luster, they have a low rate of fire for small AV and a low strength for big AV. Autocannons could be a good idea or if you want to hurt big things some lascannons. If you can't find the points however, ML will have to do. Personally I quite like the ides of relentless Volkite Culverins too...
