Khulu
I'm having a hard time with this. I am painting my Admech Mechanicus Standard Gray and Kantor Blue. The way the display shelf was set up at my FLGS, it looked like I should use Dawnstone and Maccrage Blue, respectively. The dawnstone ended up looking too bright, I think, and it looks like there should be something in between, but I don't know what. Conversely, the Macragge blue is almost the exact same shade as the Kantor Blue so it doesn't look like it's highlighted unless it's right under a light bulb. Is there a way to find a better match for these colors without just buying more paints to to try them? Grand Master Laertes
Without buying more colours? Mix Mechanicus Standard and Dawnstone to get a suitable middle tone, and mix Macragge with Dawnstone to get a lighter (even if duller) blue. If you have white, you might consider mixing it with Macragge, to get a brighter light blue. Or you might wash Kantor with Nuln Oil to darken it before highlighting with Macragge. Edit: Ops, sorry, I misread your post and thought you wanted to find a way to use those colours without buying more paints. Khulu
I was thinking about mixing them, I just am a little worried about being able to replicate my results across an army. I might just do that, though. Thanks. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323906-finding-the-right-highlight-colors/#findComment-4441566 Share on other sites
Grand Master Laertes
If so, just pick two empty paint bottles and mix a great quantity of paint there, so you will have a lot of the resulting colours for the future. It will assure consistency. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323906-finding-the-right-highlight-colors/#findComment-4441616 Share on other sites
Razblood
Just make sure to keep a note of your mix ratios, for example: 2 brushloads of Kantor to 1 brushload of Dawnstone. Also making a little swatch of the colour next to the note will help you keep mixes consistent Edit: Also what the Grand Master says is applicable  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323906-finding-the-right-highlight-colors/#findComment-4441643 Share on other sites
Guiltysparc
Altdorf and Calgar Blue are what i use for 1st and 2nd layer highlights on Maccragge Blue. Altdorf is a pretty subltle highlight and the calgar works nice for the areas you want to really bring up. Below is how it looks on one of my world eaters Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323906-finding-the-right-highlight-colors/#findComment-4442301 Share on other sites
