Dindrenzi
Hey folks, Going to be starting a brand new 30k EC army after a 20 year break from the hobby. Going to buy an airbrush and start learning everything from the beginning. Which paint brand would you recommend I purchase? I have a few GW pots that I've transferred to dropper bottles, should I stick with these and thin down or purchase a different brand? DistroyA
Personally, I'd stick with what you've got and thin it down. As for the thinner, I recommend the Tamiya x-20a thinner. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323926-emperors-children-paint-choice/#findComment-4442547 Share on other sites

Major_Gilbear
Old paint settles out after a while, and can go gritty after a long enough time has passed - even if you thin it and/or shake it up again. If you have the old hex-bottle with white flip-top lids generation of GW paints, then these should be good as long as they are unopened / well sealed since you last used them. Paints to look at are: Vallejo Model Colour Lots and lots of colours - a massive range! Very matte, fairly thick, decent coverage, although I find them a bit fragile. Vallejo Game Colour Lots of bright colours, semi-matte, fairly thick, good selection of inks, I like these and use their inks all the time. Vallejo Model Colour Air Good range of colours, very matte, fairly thin, airbrush-ready but can be applied with a normal brush as well, lovely metallics, I really like these! Privateer Press Paints (aka "P3 paints") Lots of bright colours but compact range, semi-matte, fairly thick with great coverage, these are my paints of choice for 99% of what I do. They are like a much-improved version of the old Citadel paints from the 90s, and made by the same company too. Reaper Master Series Lots of colours complete with "colour triads", very matte, fairly thick with great coverage, these are my paints of choice for painting flesh tones. Citadel Colour Lots of colours, semi-matte. Many different types/consistencies of paint segregated out by type to follow the Citadel painting tutorials. I honestly find the range unnecessarily fussy, but I accept that it provides what a lot of people are after. Along with the Vallejo Model/Game Colour ranges, these are probably the easiest to find anywhere. Also, Forge World have released a range of HH-themed airbrush paints, but I unfortunately cannot personally tell you what they are like. Foundry Paints Lots of colours complete with "colour triads", semi-matte, fairly thick, these are like a "modern" replacement of the old GW colours from 20 years ago. Andrea, Scale 75, Coat D'Arms, Army Painter, etc There are lots more ranges of varying sizes, with varying quality and cost, and of varying availability - these are the main ones I know of. Ultimately though, as long as they are all acrylic, you can mix and match any of these to your heart's content! I would honestly suggest picking up what you need from any range as you need it, rather than going in for a full range and then not using most of of it. If you are dead-set on getting a complete range for some reason, I'd maybe steer you towards P3 with VGC inks and VMCA metallics because it is versatile and relatively compact. That would be about 70-ish paints which would allow you (with a little mixing) to paint almost anything you will likely have in your collection. Finally, have a look at some artist's acyclic products too - specifically the mediums (matte, gloss), the flow-aids, the retarders, and the various effects paints (like gels, crackle mediums, etc). These are pretty cheap for the volume you get, are very high quality, and will allow you to achieve lots of effects/finishes when combined with the various inks and paints in your collection. I'd suggest getting some empty paint pots/dropper bottles too, but you have these already! Dindrenzi
Thanks Major_Gilbear, another great response. I'm not set on getting a full range, I only buy what I need when I need it. I'm thinking of VMCA/VMGA, the colours seem really nice from what I've seen of them. Just a follow up regarding flow improvers, retartders etc. Should these be used alongside airbrush thinners, i.e. Thin the paint with thinner, then add improvers/retarders as required? Now, if only someone did an Emperor's Children marine tutorial airbrush style Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323926-emperors-children-paint-choice/#findComment-4442807 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
Vallejo Model Colour Air is good to go through an airbrush straight from the bottle, but I understand that a lot of people still thin them a touch further. The various mediums are mixed with the paint before you put it into the brush. Matte and gloss medium are basically paint with no pigment, and you add these to (1) make the paint more transparent, and (2) alter the finish of the paint. After mixing up whatever paint you want to put into the brush, you will need to thin appropriately to get a suitable final consistency. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how much to thin exactly as this depends on the paints and personal preference. As for the EC airbrush tutorial... Have you tried YouTube? :) Some additives like crackle medium are really fro paint that's brushed on rather than airbrushed on. Dindrenzi
Thanks again. I found a nice one from Cold Painting Table @ miniwargaming. Just not sure I like the exact purple, may be able to modify to my liking. Evil Eye
I haven't tried any of the other paints in the range but I've tried FW's clear paints (only by brush admittedly) and they are gorgeous. They're basically perfect consistency for hand brushing, probably need a tiny bit of thinning for an airbrush. So if you wanted, what you COULD do is paint your Emperor's Children silver and airbrush the clear purple over the top to give them metallic purple armour. I got the clear purple when I was at the open day, and have purchased different silvers from the vallejo range. Just waiting for the airbrush kit to come back in stock. Have you got any pictures of the purple on a mini? Dindrenzi
No worries. I've only ever seen it on a test base, can't wait to get my kit so I can begin experimenting Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323926-emperors-children-paint-choice/#findComment-4449600 Share on other sites
