Repainting an Army

Recommended Posts

As I'm sure the case is for many fellow gamers... my painting ability and technique has greatly improved since I first started Warhammer and my older minis are not quite up to par as my new minis.

Have any of you repainted your Armies? What was your process other than stripping the paint? Did the flock on the base make anything more difficult? Anybody not recommend repainting at all?

Is it worth it? That's something only you can answer! Depends on time, skill, speed, desire to paint them again (as well as all the prep work they will need).

Regarding bases... You can soak these in hot water to soften the glue holding the flock on, and then scrape the base-tops clean again for re-basing with new material.

Alternatively, you can carefully snap off the old bases and re-base onto new ones (even the 32mm diameter ones if you want), or onto scenic/resin bases.

I would certainly consider refreshing the army over a full repaint if the old work is a good enough foundation. Some extra shading, some additional highlights, maybe new bases too?

Yeah I've considered all of those options. The issue is I have over to airbrushed for the bulk of my painting and it's kind of a different effect. I could shade with my darker color and get a close result... just wondered if starting from the ground up would yield better results.

How big is your army? When I started I only had a Tactical Squad or two in plastic, and when I got used to painting on those I didn't strip them I just started a whole new army with Forge World models. Obviously if you have a full army you probably want to salvage as much of it as you can.

I probably have 25 Grey Hunters that would need to be stripped and repainted. The rest of my power armored marines are not far enough along to need a full strip.
