What's the best two-part putty for casting?

Recommended Posts

Brothers,

I'm casting some small components for my mini's (bolt pistols, stowage bags, etc) and have a lot to do.

So far I've been using the clear instant mold stuff to make my mold and superfine milliput to cast the components.

I could try my hand at silicone and resin but this seems a bit quicker. Is there a better putty out there to use?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I normally use Milliput Yellow-grey when casting from push-moulds. For smaller and more delicate parts (like heads), I use ProCreate.

When I cast with Milliput, I use a little talc as a mould release (dust it on with an old soft paintbrush), but switch to using a little olive oil instead when using the ProCreate putty (again applied lightly with an old paintbrush).

In the end though, I guess it depends on what you're casting, and what you're going to use the cast(s) for?

To me it sounds like Astartes-ULTRA is asking for the stuff to make the mold with.

I'm interested too smile.png

Hmm, no; I'm pretty sure I've answered the correct question:

Anyway, for mould-making where I need lots of pulls of small items, I use a two-part silicone putty (sometimes sold as "Blu-stuff"). It cures in just minutes, and works very well if you dust with talc and cast in Milliput Yellow-Grey.v :)

Procreate holds finer detail, but is more flexible. Milliput (standard yellow stuff) doesn't capture the fine details as well, but it is less flexible (and thus more suitable for things like legs or whatnot). For either product, I use vaseline in the mold as a release agent, applied with a q-tip. I'm sure there are more effective agents, however!

Sorry, wasn't thinking properly happy.png

But thanks for the extra details :)

Thanks for the advice, Brothers.

I've used the clear stuff you warm up in hot water until it becomes malleable which when I cast with milliput it doesn't seem to even need a mould release, which is nice. As well as small items I've been trying to cast terminator legs for my truescale project using this combo but I definitely will invest in some blu stuff putty to make molds of finer detail things (like aquillias etc) and procreate to cast said finer things.

Nice one chaps! Much appreciated.

Just did, and I may have accidently ordered some liquid blu stuff... next month I may accidently order some blu stuff putty...

... very accident prone lately....

Don't worry, it happens to us all! ;)
