Death Guard HH Calth box

Greetings all. So I had a 2nd calth box that I wasn't doing anything with. I decided to turn them into Death Guard cause I've been wanting to play them cause they look awesome and Mortarion is one of the best looking primarchs in the game. I've paged through the tactica thread and it helped but I'm not sure exactly how to play them. I played them the other day and I got pretty soundly beat. I ran 2 20man tactical squads and a 10 man hss with ML and another 10 man hss with heavy flamers. I then had typhon with a deathshroud body guard with the reaping row. I've already decided to get a spartan for the terminators so they can actually do stuff. I like the idea of a 20man tactical sitting on an objective and having fotl but they just seem to move to slow. My opponent was running the quad mortar rapiers and they just seemed to chew up everything before I could get them anywhere. Suggestions? How do you guys play death guard? Maybe I'm just not used to them as I play a very rapid in your face blood angels force in 40k.

Keep your infantry in transports. Have you considered running Primarch's Chosen and using Vets in Rhinos instead of 20 strong blobs? They'd pretty reliably deal with mortars using Sniper provided you get in range. Alternatively, once you get the Primarch you can send Mortarion to deal with them as he's pretty darn fast and actually operates well solo.

Landraiders had a reduction in point cost. Consider running a standard Raider for a unit of Deathshroud or Termies that only number 5.

Your 10 strong missile squads should reliably put wounds on Mortars too. How many was he running?

With the Reaping RoW veterans are Troops Choices, also think about some heavy support squads!!

Only non compulsory though. With the changes to assault squads though, they make perfect choices for that (move through cover, rad grenades).

Plus this image is awesome:

@ish he was running 3. He went first and targeted the ML first off and before the start of my first turn my support squad went from 10 to 3 (he rolled absurdly well. Probably a heretic) Your also right I'm starting to think 10 in transports are better then 20 foot slogging.

A spartan is on my list of things to get next.

@Charlo I'll look more into assault squads

Remember death guard have a 4+ feel no pain to poison and flesh bane. Don't be afraid to take a deep breath of that phosphex and come out smiling.

Not to mention we either get MTC and don't care about the dangerous terrain, or we can even re-roll failed tests if we don't have it.

Thats the point. Take a spartan and put Morti into it.

6" Spartan plus 6" Morti plus 10" Morty redeploy plus charge with fleet.

I did this and he just chew through his Rapiers ;)

2nd thing: If you got HSS with AC and ML: Deploy them 37" from the Thudd Guns, they are only 36" range while you've got 48" ;)

Or try the new RoW: Your troops will get a 5+ for cover and your missiles a str 5...
