WIP First Legion- Pride and Honor during the Scouring

Hello all!

I'm a former 40k player, got out about ten years ago because I would buy up every new army and never finish anything. Haven't played any GW game in years, switched over to X-wing miniatures due to budget constraints (aka the wife). Anyway, I've been reading the HH novels and really enjoying the setting, saw that GW had made some plastic HH minis and am going to try them out. I am mainly going to do this as a fluff/modeling hobby rather than a playing hobby, but I still want to stay within the accepted rules. I have a couple of questions regarding power armor/conversions. Oh, planning on making Dark Angels.

1. In regards the Dark Angels upgrade pack (GW, not FW)- will the shoulderpads work for 30k marines? What type of the blade is the power sword, could it be used as a Calibanite blade?

2. What mark of power armor do 40k Sternguard use? Is it suitable for inclusion in a Heresy-era DA force?

Any other tips and tricks would be welcome. Thanks for reading!

Edit: Photos of WIP begin on page 2. Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome!

The shoulder pads are interchangeable. They might not completely look like Mk IV pads though. The PA marines in B@C are all Mk IV. The power sword could be used as a Calibanite War Blade. Both are one handed swords. It's too small to make a Terranic Greatsword.

IIRC they are a mix of marks IV to VII. So everything was available during the heresy.

So I managed to get an ebay set of BoC Cataphracti Terminators, with an exta termie Praetor. So now I have a Chaplain, two termie Praetors, and five termies. Any ideas on conversions for the two Praetors? I figure that one will stay as-is to be the Sargeant of the termies, but I'm stuck on what to do with the other-chainfist isn't really a heroic weapon in my mind.

The Calth conversions thread has loads of great ideas for reworking the Praetor. I particularly recommend twisting the right leg, and arm and head swaps are doable. Chop happy, cut loose.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm definitely going to read through that thread. I plan on having the DA be early Scouring timeline, so after the Battle of Terra and destruction of Caliban. First generation of Inner Circle and hunters of the Fallen.

Another question (thanks for answering everyone, lots of loremasters here).

What is the Dark Angels organization and ranks during the Heresy/Scouring?

I know that Praetors are generally called Chapter Masters for the DA, but what would be the ranks under them, aside from Sergeant? Do the DA have Centurions or Captains/Lieutenants or something more exotic?

Thus far, the FW articles on the Dark Angels is fairly limited.  We know that they have 6 wings (Death, Dread, Storm, Iron, Raven, ... and I am forgetting the 6th).  But ranks such as Lance Sergeant have been seen.  The DA would have Centurion Grade Officers though their titles might be a mix of Knight terms and normal rank structure (Ala Shield LT,  Lance Captain, ect) based on which Wing they come from.  At least that is how I make sense of what I have seen thus far.

As far as we know, the DA command structure (like a few other legions) is incredibly unique and an insane mix of Terran and Calibanite terms that go in and out of service depending on who you ask within the Legion. The Wings also complicate this further.

We won't know anything incredibly concrete until we learn ALL THEIR SECRETSSSS when they are covered by Forge World - fingers crossed Book 8, code name: Angelus.

Any power sword can be a Warblade etc, you just gotta believe! But yes the DA vet sprue ones would be perfect, as would the lovely "held aloft" ones from the Raven Wing sprue).

I really want to start on DA - but outside of jetbikes or tanks and a few pieces of wargear we don't really know what they will bring and according to the Almighty Alan Bligh at the last event they are going big on them:

  • ALL Wings represented
  • Loads of unique tech
  • Grav Land Raiders

Good to know. I'm looking forward to seeing all the fun stuff DA should be getting- here's hoping to some cool new plasma weapons! I love the idea of the Dark Angels having a unique armory of pre-Crusade weaponry. Book 8 having both DA and BA would be really nice- what other Legions are we missing rules for, what with the Wolves and TSons supposedly coming up in Book 7? Scars?

Right now I'm looking at making a Scouring DA force, so a mix of Heresy-era and post-Heresy armor, weaponry, and robes will all be present. In my mind, this is the time period where the Inner Circle is first formed and the Fallen are starting to be hunted. Standard DA hooded robes will be present, as will Deathwing/Ravenwing iconography, but not as conspicuous as 40k DA. Maybe just have the officers, sergeants, and veteran troops with a mix of robes/overt symbols.

Currently I've ordered a DV Company Master (stand-in for a Consul Delagatus atm) and DV Librarian to go with my Interrogator-Chaplain, and have a 10-man B@C tac squad coming to join my 7-man Cataphracti squad. Plus I managed to score a nice bag of bits off of ebay full of DA goodies- looking forward to making the tac squad into a couple of veteran squads. While I'm not planning on playing 30k (got my hands full with training for X-wing tourneys) I really like getting back into the hobby and enjoy making the squads conform to the rules. It will allow me an outlet for modeling that X-wing just doesn't give me, and should help tighten my painting skills.

Thanks for all the help! I'm sure I'll have more questions along the way :D

DA already have a cool new Plasma weapon!

The Plasma Repeater:

12" S6 AP2 Twin-Linked, Salvo 3/2

Downside is you only get 6" range if you move, but they are quite nice in Outflanking Vet Squads or a support squad in a Dreadclaw who can swoop in close then extend their range the next turn with a big bubble of threat.

My guess is that the DA terminator or jetbike unit will have access to them - sadly the rules mean you can't change the Outrider Bike Plasma for them, which would have been perfect.

  • Grav Land Raiders

Is that a Land Raider with grav guns or a hovering Land Laider? I wasn't aware there are grav weapons in 30K, and a hover-raider is just wrong.

The Latter.

And we have Graviton Weapons with Mechanicum Graviton Imploders being 40k grav.

Managed to cobble together a Legion Chosen from eBay bits to accompany my Consul. Former member of the Ravenwing, but owes the Consul a debt and so joins him as part of the command squad until his debt is paid.

Going to paint the shield up with the angel being made out of stone.

Why is it wrong?

The custodes are shown as having hover rhinos since visions. DA are all about that lost dark age tech. It's freaking awesome.

I think it does not fit with the image of a super heavy (not the game term) tank to seemingly effortlessly glide over terrain. A tank of that size should ignore terrain by crashing through it. Yes, IMHO the regular Land Raider should have a rule to that effect or at least get dozer blades back.

On the other hand it makes sense that Mr. Land developed such a machine.

Question- were servo-skulls a thing during the Crusade/Heresy/Scouring? I got a couple in my eBay bits and wondered if they were around during Heresy-era or if that was simply something the Mechanicum came up with later.

Also- looking at the Retribution book only characters can take Calibanite blades, so I'm fairly certain that means my stabby, sword-wielding vet squad can only equip regular power swords aside from the sergeant, correct?

Servo Skulls - I would imagine so... A lot of current wargear is similar in description.

Calibanite Blades - yes, only the sergeant can get the special sword :(
