BrotherCaptainArkhan
First off, I really like the colour scheme. Genuinely looks cool and I would like to see it on a miniature, think it'd be striking on the tabletop. However, PLEASE RETHINK THE CHAPTER NAME. Say it out loud three or four times with a British accent and tell me it doesn't conjure unintended imagery. Cryptix
I'm sorry but I can't get past the name. I clicked on this thinking "is he serious?" I know you probably meant in the context of Virgin, but most people read that and think of the other thing. Erasus
I think he means it to relate to the Vergina Sun, part of his Chapter badge, however too many people will think of the other, very closely spelt word . . . Qai
The Chapter name has its roots in the Vergina Sun: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vergina_Sun which I used as inspiration for the Badge. The entire Chapter is heavily influenced by Ancient Greek and Macedonian heritages. You see this reflected in the badge and banners, as well as name. The colours and scheme are a fusion of that heritage with that of the Imperial Fists proper, elements of the the Black Templars, and the Imperial Fists of the MK1-3 era. The name *should* be pronounced as ver (with a trill) + geena (with a hard g, as in "good"), following the phonemes of Greek. But I know what you guys are getting at, though. I was really hoping the name wouldn't be an issue... guess back to the drawing board... I would still like to keep the heritage connections but may perhaps change some of the phonemic structure. I might stay with this in the long run or at least use it as a placeholder for the time-being. Thanks for that suggestion! Paradigm
Astral Fists, Praetors of Makedon, Dorn's Companions, Sons of Archamus. There are good names falling out of the sky, that relate directly or indirectly (or not at all) to Alexander's Emblem. Be careful with Greek elements and Imperial Fists successors. Iron Warriors tend to have some Greek cultural flair, and the Minotaurs Chapter is a potential Loyalist Iron Warrior Successor. That said, it could be done very well with that careful consideration. Olis
Interesting colour scheme, brother. It's not often that I think the traditional colour-denotes-company works, but I believe it sorta does with your Chapter. Maybe that's because only one pad is affected, maybe not. *shrug* I see that you've gone quite in-depth with the colour scheme. Your hard work should be applauded, though the written portion will be what makes your DIY shine. It's intriguing to see that you are basing them in and around areas of the Imperium that are the domains of FFG - iirc Calixis doesn't have any space marine Chapters based there but, being fleet based, you've managed to skirt that pitfall well enough. As for the name, if you're switching out ''Vergina'' for ''Argivus'', may I suggest an alliterating name - the Angels Argivus. Qai
I want to thank everyone for their feedback. I very much appreciate this! Some really good names have been suggested and I am strongly considering them. The name itself might actually be the last thing I finalize for the Chapter. The lore in terms of its Hellenic connection should not interfere with the Minotaurs as what I have above is pretty much as far as I'm going in this direction. There might be a couple of small things down the road, but nothing that would be un-changeable if there is a conflict. Definitely not anything that would require a Chapter re-work. With regards to colour-denotes-company, how many iterations I've gone through... my my... Every single scheme I would try would end up looking like some sort of cross between circus performers and a football team's jerseys. I do think my current scheme actually does work, although I'm not too hot on the orange and purple. I'm really glad someone spotted the connection to FFG as this is very important. Essentially Calixis is from Dark Heresy 1e and Askellon is from Dark Heresy 2e (which is "east" of Calixis), and the other two sectors are sandwiched in between. Being Dark Heresy, this is heavily in the domain of the Inquisition. The specialty of the Chapter to hunt down renegade Chapters plays in very closely to working with the Inquisition. I'm not yet ready to reveal the lore in its entirety because it's actually quite extensive and still very much a WIP. I've been building it up over the years in connection to the RPG books and running campaigns, and now putting it all together into a coherent narrative that intermingles Space Marines with the Inquisition so as not to violate canon. I can, however, give you guys a glimpse of how extensive the lore actually gets. There is the background historical Chapter fluff, which will eventually be presented. But I'm a bit more interested in the immediate history and aftermath of where the Chapter finds itself and what it is dealing with. An Inquisitor has turned to Chaos, and has turned a portion of the Loyalists of this Chapter to Chaos as well. Just "north" of the Calixis sector is the Spinward Front where Imperial Guard are battling Orks. The Inquisitor takes a branch of Loyalists to a shrine world where they are exposed to a Chaotic ritual and turned to Chaos (I'm glossing over a LOT of stuff here as things aren't quite that simple. Just giving the end result). The ultimate aim of the Inquisitor is to use these new CSM to en masse convert the Imperial Guard in the Spinward Front to Chaos, defeat the Orks with assistance from the Black Legion in that region, and then launch a full out assault on the Calixis sector. The Traitors are branded Eclipse Marines and absorbed into the Black Legion. http://www.isleofzeus.com/images/eclipsemarines/csm_sheet_abaddon_codex.png They work as a cohesive unit within the Black Legion, but individual members also work alongside Hounds of Abaddon, Sons of the Cyclops, Bringers of Decay, and Children of Torment (i.e., Black Legion members devoted to a specific Chaos god). JUST TO MAKE IT CLEAR: The entire Chapter does NOT fall to Chaos. Just a small portion, i.e., two Companies. The Loyalists are faced with fighting their fallen (enlightened?) brethren. But more will be said of the Eclipse Marines in a separate thread =) I'll be updating this thread with a lot more Loyalists fluff soon enough. Olis
Colour me interested. Judging by the way you've presented the idea so far, these fallen loyalists are turned against their will, correct? Regardless, hearing that much has been written and thought about this, I would advise posting in segments so that we of the Liber have time to digest and critique instead of coming across a huge wall o' text. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324673-vergina-fists-loyalists/#findComment-4468330 Share on other sites
Qai
To directly answer your question, they were unwilling participants in the corruption to Chaos. Think of it in a way similar to how the rank-and-file Marines of the Thousand Sons became corrupt: the Space Wolves invade Prospero, Leman Russ and Magnus battle it out 1v1, and just when Leman Russ is about to give the killing blow to Magnus, Magnus accepts servitude to Tzeentch in exchange for "saving" his Legion, and the entire Thousand Sons are immediately vanished from Prospero to Sortiarius. The shear unmitigated exposure to the Warp, "peer pressure", and the desire to survive saw the rank-and-file Marines of the Legion turn to Chaos. A similar idea is present in how the Death Guard ultimately came to embrace Nurgle in the sense of embrace Chaos and live, or die stranded in the Warp. So, it's much in this way that the Eclipse Marines came to be, i.e., immediate circumstances forced upon them, rather than willingly and pro-actively seeking Chaos like say the Word Bearers. Nonetheless, once turned to Chaos the precipitating causes are irrelevant and the fight de facto becomes one against the Imperium. About revealing fluff a bit at a time, yeah that's cool. Probably best that way. In that regard, I can start with presenting maps of the regions concerned. On a galactic scale, we have the Segmentums: http://www.isleofzeus.com/images/maps/segmentums.png The Chapter is in Segmentum Obscurus, which is the location of the Ocularis Terribus and the Cadian Gate. The Sectors of interest are in the so-called Halo Stars of Segmentum Obscurus, in the "north-west" part of the Segmentum: http://www.isleofzeus.com/images/maps/spinwardfrontgalacticlocation.jpg The Calixis, Ixaniad, Scarus, and Askellon Sectors in the Halo Stars are located thus: http://www.isleofzeus.com/images/maps/segmentumobscurissectors.png The Periphery Subsector is on the "Spinward Front" of the Calixis Sector: http://www.isleofzeus.com/images/maps/calixissectorspinwardfront.jpghttp://www.isleofzeus.com/images/maps/calixissector.jpg The objective of the Eclipse Marines is to secure the belt of planets in the Periphery: Melqart - Letum - Ganf Magna - Avitohol - Kulth. The Black Legion is amassed in the Stygies Deeps. By securing the belt, the Black Legion secures a lot of planets with resources and bases of operations to 1) launch an attack on the Calixis sector, and 2) isolates the Loyalists of the Chapter that are stationed in the Calixis sector proper, those that are stationed in the "northern" Severan Dominate part of the Periphery, and those that are stationed in the "eastern" Ixaniad, Scarus, and Askellon sectors. This cuts off supplies and communication between the Companies utilizing a divide-and-conquer strategy. It also confuses the situation greatly for the Loyalists because the Periphery is an active war zone between the Imperial Guard and Orks, namey in the Ganf Magna - Kulth region. Therefore, the Loyalists can't be sure as to the actual causes of being cut-off. My next post will focus on the details of which Loyalist Companies are located where, their battle formations, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324673-vergina-fists-loyalists/#findComment-4468866 Share on other sites
