Captain Idaho
I might be back as a full time player soon and if that is the case I need solid theoretical. Where is the game? Do players lean to mechanised play or gun lines? Has artillery dominated play or can a horde win the day? Does close combat work and if so how? Are Deathstars rampant? Now, obviously local experience may vary but it often reflects wider trends. Captain Idaho
For a bit of fun, let's also talk about the ways to disrupt the dominant styles of play. SkimaskMohawk
Quad launchers and leviathans are extremely popular, with the leviathan being a notable counter to the former, along just being extremely good. Veterans are excellent so you can usually except to see them in rhinos and some terminators in a spartan if they're running a Pride of the Legion list. Most common you'll see heavy alpha strike/disruption units that are supposed to take out any really strong shooting threats with the lists either having filler troops or making use of vets and terminators, sometimes with a character lead melee unit of 2+ armour save guys Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324916-a-fresh-look-at-the-state-of-play/#findComment-4472936 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
What do people consider are the best counters to Quad Launchers? Rhino Veteran Tacticals is pretty much anti Sternguard I'm guessing. helterskelter
World eaters: inductii/chainaxe/dreadclaw Counter: augury scanners/aa/plasma Miltia as allies or in a main list Counter: whirlwind/storm eagle/pie plates/high rates of fire Terror assault Counter: all the armour Dropbears (leviathan in pods) Counter: AA, massed AT, tarpits Iron hands: orth in a sicaran Counter: anything that can get right up his jaxy fast enough to slag him before he slags you. White scars/DA bike lists Counter: sicaran battle tanks/typhon Spartan/LR assault Counter: lightnings/orbital strike wings/xiphon/tooled javelin/grav speeders/grav rapier/grav contemptor Massed grav Counter: flyers Only a small selection of thoughts and by no means a definitive list or counters. And you'll never be able to deal with everything so just be prepared for most things :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324916-a-fresh-look-at-the-state-of-play/#findComment-4472962 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Good replies so far. I'm thinking my style in 30k will have a place though choosing Breachers is expensive for the job! I read in passing elsewhere the latest edition update (Age of Darkness) favours infantry more - is this the case? But all of the basic troops and Veterans got points reductions. Nightmare84
Quad launchers with phosphex mince infantry but they are fairly easily countered. you may run into the odd waac list that has multiple batteries of them but its been my experience that 30k guys are much more chill on win more combos. i run a fairly balanced list as far as mech to infantry ratio and im usually fine. only been smacked by a mechanicum list (soooo many high toughness models) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324916-a-fresh-look-at-the-state-of-play/#findComment-4473263 Share on other sites

Just play the models you like and don't mess the gaming experience up by maxing your lists out too much. lanceqi
You guys have so much love and that's wonderful. But in my case, I have to deal with Spartan spam like all the time. :p Rending and lascannon are your friend ;) a friend of mine stopped a spartan dead T1 with Orth in a Sicaran (though regular ones can still do the job), which lead me to repaint and up arm mine with a pintle multi melta and 2hk. Being a fast tank its much more manoeuvrable whilst still being able to retain high rate of fire. Also look to malcador, not fast anymore but have battle speed which allows more wiggle room Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/324916-a-fresh-look-at-the-state-of-play/#findComment-4473320 Share on other sites
Theredknight
Not sure when you played last but the cortus has since been released. A cheaper knock off version of the contemptor, but has other options. A great dual grav gun platform. Units depends very much upon your legion really. The 3rd company elite ROW for EC makes me take 2/3 units of 10 man kakophoni squads with an apothecary in for instance, instead of tactical squads.
