What happens to the shoulder pad on return to the Marines original Chapter?

 

Do they keep it?

I believe they do (or can): it is a mark of honour, and can also be seen a bit like a Crux Terminatus I believe.

Just to add to this:

 

I am fairly certain they can keep the Deathwatch pad as a mark of their service.

 

However, what goes on their right shoulder pad?

Do they keep their chapter symbol on the opposite side? Or do they forgo the symbol all together (as their colours and squad mates should identify their chapter) and stick to the standard squad type markings on their right pad?

 

E.g. Ultramarine Veteran returns to the chapter do they have Deathwatch Pad on left and UM symbol on right (like the DW but no longer in black armour)? Or DW Pad on left and standard Codex Veteran markings on the right (no chapter symbol)?

Or some other combination entirely?

 

Same with Terminators! Where does the Crux Terminatus go if the retain the DW pad?

Is it okay to just wear it somewhere else?

In the new book there's a blurb and text box stating they keep the pad and repaint their armor to their chapter colors

I'd imagine that they keep the pad and use it instead of their squadmarkings, similar to the studded pauldrons.

One thing I've done in the past was use one of the terminator besegews for the chapter icon. It lets you put the chapter symbol in the left shoulderish area while maintaining squad markings on the right.

The other way around, actually, DW pads found in old captain box and terminator box are supposed to go on right arm, and were meant as post-service badges. They were asymmetric so you couldn't really have used them as in-service DW pads without cutting the rim or marine looking kind of dumb.

All of the older fluff had returnee's placing their Chapter Pads back in the traditional left, with the DW pad moving to their right to replace the Squad Markings.

I'm also fairly certain it's just the pad that remains silver with all other armour segments returning to Chapter colours.

I was just reading the old SM Codex and, between their decorations, there is the Deathwatch marking, described as a reward shown on the power armor after one took service into it.
