Mechanicus Kill-Teams

Recommended Posts

I've had great success with a unit of Vanguard with a plasma caliver and a stock Ironstrider.

According to the new Kill Team rules you cannot take Heavy Support Choices so you shouldn't be using the Ironstrider.

Then I'll have to think of something new when we start using the new rules.

I know this discussion has been mostly Mechanicus kill teams, but what about some Mechanicum kill teams.

Thralls could provide a lot of numbers to trow at the enemy with Thallax, Scyllax, Vorax or Myrmidon as the heavy hitters.

Alternatively more (or better) Thralls and Lacryaemarta Techpriest (or two) to make them even tougher.

Guys, Guys.... Hear me out.

2 bio-corrosive ammo vorax

10 Fearless thralls

a perfect 200 points.

eh? Eh?

That's why we send the vorax set on permanant "Kill mode!" They go in, kill everything that is moving with dakka or cutting, then the thralls walk in and pick up the important stuff for the magos who is sitting in his ship reading binary comics.

On Vorax.. well i think it would depend on the mission, they wouldn't be what i'd send in to sabotage something for example, i think that's where it makes sense that kill teams would be selected for the mission where possible. Certainly reading the short story Vorax gives plenty of argument in favour of using them in kill-team games.

These things have a tendency to happen when I find myself with nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon.

Magnificent!
Ever since i saw that artwork i've been half-expecting half-wanting Forgeworld to make that for an event-only Thallax, and hopefully when games day equivalents return to Australia they will, that or put it in an upgrade set. Superb work CommodusXIII!

I'd use the extra points for 5 Vanguard and some goodies for the Alpha. That's a lot of bodies dishing out a lot of firepower for a Kill Team. Their inherent fragility will be less mitigated by the fact there are just so many targets to take down.

That idea almost seems too mean to play, and that is coming from a guy who wants to bring 2 Monstrous creatures to a kill team game!

Also, I would probably choose a Dragoon or an iron strider for those extra points... because nothing says "Screw you" like a giant metal calvilere.

I'll likely give the Secutarii Alpha an omnispex, because they look so awesome on a model.

I guess part of my hesitation with all of this is that at a point it can start to feel more like a combat patrol than a kill-team, if you get me. 15 cyborgs is a lot of chaps and chapettes, rather than an elite gang or infiltration force.

Still, the Dirty Dozen had 12, so... maybe I'm overthinking it.

I do see your point. The more bodies, the fewer specialists you seem to have. Can you do 5 Peltasts so there's room for a pair of Dragoons instead? Or is it 10, minimum?

Where's the skull from?

I have a huge bag of resin skulls from Dragon Forge Design's aptly-named "Skulls, Skulls, Skulls" Kickstarter. I cut one down to a little more than the quarter that you see.

It took quite a but of patience with my Dremel to hollow out the inside of the Thallax head - at the moment, I only have that one head from a previous bits swap, so I did my best not to mess up. From there, it was probably a good 30 minutes of trying to cram the skull into it through the broken visor, Dremeling out a little more, dry fitting again, etc. Then some minor greenstuff work to hide the scars.

That's one of the reasons I'm going with the Thallax this time around. Four bodies for three Specialists and a Leader. Each one gets a distinct personality, and each loss is keenly felt.
