Deathwatch: Talon Squad

Recommended Posts

Well it's been a good deal too long since I posted anything so I'm glad GW finally made a kit that makes it all too easy to start a project I've wanted to do for some time now:  Talon Squad from Steve Parker's novel Deathwatch as well as a few short stories.

For those of you who haven't read it, Parker came up with a pretty interesting crew and group dynamic:

I'm starting with the brothers that I can model easily right out of the Deathwatch Veterans box, so Rauth, Solarion and Voss.

Zeed will need a pair of lightning claws from somewhere, Karras…I'm not sure what I'm going to do with Karras.  I'm pretty sure he wears power armor so that tactical dreadnought armor Librarian's not an option, and the older librarian models look terrible IMHO.  I'm leaning towards two options:  1.  Modding the Blood Ravens Librarian from the Overkill box, or 2. just figuring out a way to scratch build a psychic hood for him.  The good part about the scratch build idea is that the chest plates from the Veterans box have those grooves for ammo and field packs on the front that I could run that iconic piping that librarians have down the front easily.  Any suggestions as to where to look for making psychic hoods is appreciated.

Meanwhile, here's where things stand as of now.

Darrion Rauth ("Watcher')

I'm a pretty big fan of this character, probably my favorite after or before Karras.  I never really got into the Exorcists before but this guy is downright scary.  His skin is pale and his eyes are sort of weird, which--if you read the background for the chapter--probably are after effects of daemonic possession, something of a right of passage for Exorcists.  He is also essentially a psychic blank--i.e. he doesn't really have a warp presence to speak of, which is super unsettling to pretty much everyone.  His unstated roll in the squad is to kill Karras if his psychic powers get the better of him.  Nice.

Ignatio Solarion ("Prophet")

He's an Ultramarine, and acts like it, mostly complaining that he should be in charge.  Lol, OK.  He's the designated marksman of the group and pretty much is tolerated for his overbearing know-it-all attitude because he's such an incredible shot.  He was actually Telion's protege before being seconded to the Deathwatch.

OK, so now that the the ball's rolling, I'll try to get some paint on these guys in the near future.  Meanwhile, if you have any librarian modeling ideas, hit me up.

Like Deathspectersgt7 said, grey knights plastic back with your Deathwatch front torso for your librarian. SM torso parts are usually pretty compatable.

If you're in the US and don't have the back handy, pm me and I'll get you one one the way!

Two options for power armored librarians come two mind. First, there is the Forgeworld Sevrin Loth kit, which has an enclosed helmet with psychic hood.

Second, depending on how much conversion work you want to take on, I've seen some solid looking psychic hoods built out of shoulder pads. I am sure if you search here or on Google you can find an image, but basically the part which is supposed to go over the shoulder joint can go over the model's head.

If yoiu go this route, you probably want to cut down the sides of the pad to taper it from the collar up to the bit that goes over the psycher's head, otherwise it will look like a shoulder pad still. That will give you the right shape but oibe thing to consider is what type of details you want and whether its feasible to convert them up.

@Blank--that's a good call on the shoulder pad idea.  I found a good tutorial on From the Warp.  I figure I can give that a try, I'm not out much other than a shoulder pad if it doesn't look OK.

I've done a first pass at Rauth.

Did a fair amount of work on his face, as this will be the most interesting thing about this character.  Other than that, some basic highlights, still need to work a lot on the bolter and sword, and do some weathering.  I'm going to be picking up some of those new pre-fab bases GW put out, as I like those a lot and they work well with the board tiles from Overkill.

I've loved Steve Parker's Talon Squad stories, Seifer Zeed is one of the reasons I started Raven Guard, so this is pretty exciting. I like Rauth, I think you've nailed him. I'd always have pictured Solarion helmeted though.

Thanks! Yeah Zeed is a great character. I'm probably going helmet-less for most of them just because it's easier for me to get into their personalities that way. I might stick a helmet on Voss though, just to emphasize his role as heavy. For Zeed I was thinking of using a top-knot space wolf head since he's described as having long hair. I might transfer the top-knot to another head though.

Making some progress.  I have an Exorcist shoulder pad coming courtesy of DeathSpectreSgt which will suit Rauth nicely I think.  In terms of Karras, I've decided to convert the new power armor librarian that I forgot exists.  It should be fairly easy to give him a different head, weapons and shoulder pads, which is all I really need to do and he should look fairly dynamic!  I'm still considering using some Space Wolves lightning claws for Zeed, but only if I can modify the large skull on one of the arms to look more like a large bird head rather than a wolf's.  I've seen it done before, so I might take a shot at it.

Pretty happy with how Solarion, Rauth and Voss are shaping up, having started basing and weathering them.  There are still plenty of highlights and details I need to focus on, but here's where they stand.
