Fury of the Ancients

I hadn't specifically thought about a Scars dread, but now I want to do one! I love Dreads (well, Contemptors, Deredeos and Leviathans, I don't like the boxy dreads) so I'll probably end up with one from every legion seeing as I can't pick a legion still! I might wait and see if the Scars book says anything about dreads, I know in the old lore they don't use them, but I could see them being used if there are some from the Terran Vth legion left, or maybe even used as some kind of punishment in the legion.

Sounds like a great idea, with a potential for some interesting fluff. I really like seeing dreads in scars colours, there's just something about the White and red detailing, a Deredeo would be awesome

I think dreads would/should fit the Scars, at least in 30k. There are Terrans in there, and as per most other legions, I'm pretty sure the Vth did not recruit exclusively from Chogoris. So while a Chogoran would chafe at the idea, a legionary recruited anywhere else might not...

Thanks Cadmus!

Unfortunately, the Leviathans have not yet seen battle. I picked them up shortly before the ETL and I haven't had the opportunity to use them or even put a brush to them since. I don't have much time to play these days, either. Fingers crossed soon.

Yup, all three are for my Death Guard. I was going to go all CC, but the Grav Bombards were just too nasty to say no to. I've contemplated some more, but 3 are a ton of points as it is and I don't think I would want to sacrifice more points to throw at them. Besides, I still need to get myself a Deredeo... and maybe more Contemptors. You know, just in case.

I'd love to get my grubby mitts on some of the FW Mk. IV generic Dreadnoughts, but it seems they're gone now and I can't find any on eBay or anything sad.png

Iron Abides Brothers. Great looking dreadnoughts all around.

I thought you might like to see some in candy red:

Haha seeing you 1k sons dreads, and comparing them to mine, it makes me reluctant to put mine here because they are nowhere near your league! (And I can't figure out how to post pics from a phone )

@ athrawes - that's such a beautifully deep metallic red, are you using FW clear paints to achieve that? That leviathan is the first Tson's one I've seen, wonderfully customised! Bravo!

I think I've solved my Deredeo/leviathan dilemma, just buy both.....

Here's Athrawes' metallic red recipe from his thread (as far as I know. He may have switched to a new one, I honestly can't recall.)

++++++ Metallic Red Recipe ++++++++

  • Black undercoat,
  • follow by a thinned airbrush coat of Ironhand Steel (leadbelcher would work too, but it's slightly darker so I opted for the FW Iron hands Steel. leaving the lower half of armor plates darker. Bestway I can describe this is airbrushing from just ever so slightly above the model. This gives the Silver a natural shading on the lower armor pieces and in the recesses.
  • I followed this up with a Zenithal highlighting of the upper armor plates and head/backpack by airbrushing Runefang Steel. Pay careful attention to getting an even coat on the head, backpack and shoulder pads.
  • With the base metallic finished; I did three thinned airbrush coats of Angron Clear red, followed with a brief spurt of Tamiya Clear red to darken it a bit. The clear red takes a while to dry so it's best to do large groups at once. Tamiya Clear red could also work, but is again slightlly darker than Angron, while agron has a mild orangish tint to it which i like for a vibrant red.
  • Next wash the recesses carefully with Nuln Oil, try hard not to get any on red armor. If you do an easy fix i to go back over that spill with brushed on Angron Clear.
  • Finish the red by Weathering/edge highlighting Runefange steel.

@Rangaman - nice collection, I think my favourite is the choomtemptor. Any interesting background or battlefield successes?

Yea I have written up fluff/background stuff for the majority of these, they are strewn throughout my project log. On the tabletop the Choomtemptor has destroyed a couple of Dreads with side armour shots, annihilated infantry and even scored a Sevetar kill. I have taken all the Sons of Horus Dreads in my Escalation league games and they really help with either infantry support or as armoured distraction to keep the tanks alive. I will probably fill out the Talons next year so I can run an actual Fury of the Ancients army

Well, I have this guy that everyone has probably seen before:

I also have this that I might try to whip into something presentable.

And I also have two Leviathan dreads that I haven't put together yet, and all will be painted as Dusk Raiders, hopefully in the near future.

If BCK's throwing up some WIP pictures, I might as well too.

Pictured above is Justici Reynault Zahn. Haven't quite finished his saga (got some editing to do,) and it won't be published until he's complete anyways, but it should be good. Cataphractii head is... meh. Could be worse, but not real proud of that. It was a compromise, and I wish I had a different bit when I built him.

I'm never painting this model straight up again, ever. I've got... what is it, five now? Never though without extensive kitbashing, it... just doesn't appeal to me at all. He doesn't deserve a name, though I think I gave him one. Something Martell. I did some freehand and touch-up work after I took this picture, including a name on the scrollwork at the front. I have to update his basing.

My box Dread, Old Nameless. I like him. Just had him lying around, abandoned after my old Black Templars project crashed and burned, so I touched him up a bit and repainted him. I'm not a great painter, nor even a good one, but I'm fairly proud of him, especially the handprint on the legplate. Also have to update his base.

OMG ATHRAWES I'D NOT SEEN YOUR LEVIATHAN!

I've always liked my Dreads so I'll post a couple...

Brother MICHELANGELON has fallen, a suitable chassis has been located. . .

/Internment into LEVIATHAN pattern chassis underway.

Brother LEONIDAS has fallen, suitable chassis not yet found.

Can we discuss the "Fury of the Ancients" Rite of War here too?

In case we can, I'm thinking that since 30k Dreadnoughts don't get "Legiones Astartes" rules applied to them, this kind of Dreadnought-focussed RoW is a bit of a waste and rather too generic.  It's also heavily restrictive in that you are forced to use up all three of your HQ slots.  Anyone had success with that RoW?

I would have liked to have seen people use lots of Mk. IV Dreadnoughts in 30k since that's the era in which they were first fielded.  Unfortunately FW discontinued them all. And was the Contemptor Cortus really necessary if Mk. IV Dreadnoughts could have been used instead?

This guy still needs a little work on the hammer transitioning into the forearm, but it's mostly there. I also need to core out the head socket so the head sits a little neater :)

This was my highlight of my failed vow for ETL. Nearly done :D

A couple oldies here. I bashed them before the Leviathans hit the web, and seeing them now, they almost look like mini Levs :)
