henrywalker
Just a quick fluff question. Do the deathwatch have dreadnoughts from other chapters come and serve on the watch? Or do they inter deathwatch marines into their own sarcophaguses? Or is it a bit of both? shandwen
The codex mentions only that Deathwatch members too wounded to go on are placed into dreadnoughts. There isn't any mention of dreads from other chapters being sent to the DW, so it could be done, but nothing is wrote about it (but the equipment and expertise to transport a dread and ensure its survival en-route and when awoken would be enough as to deter most chapters from transferring one.) henrywalker
Just had a lovely imagine in my head of a particularly annoying dreadnought getting shipped to the deathwatch while its asleep. Thinking about it though I'd guess dreads are considered too valuable to give up by most chapter masters. leth
I always imagined them recovering them from ancient battlefields or recovering chassis long lost to their chapters. At least that is how I rationalize that they are chapter specific models anyway lol. Hahaha you nearly made me spill my coffee! This really needs to be made into a webcomic strip :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325343-deathwatch-dreadnought-fluff/#findComment-4485377 Share on other sites
Brother Captain Kezef
The Deathwatch RPG states that the Deathwatch have a limited number of Dreadnoughts available. When a suitable candidate is at death's door, a request is made to their parent chapter and if they agree the fallen hero is interred. This makes their inclusion into the Deathwatch permanent, they do not return to their parent chapters. IronDrake28
I read a short story from one the Hammer & Bolter books a while back. The Kill Team was discussing that they wish they'd brought their Dreadnought member along. They mentioned which chapter but I can't quite remember which. The newer fluff seems to make Deathwatch service more permanent, and that they act like a self-sufficient Chapter in more aspects. I imagine a chapter 'donating' an honoured brother to guide the younger generation wouldn't be that rare. Black Cohort
You could also have dreadnoughts from a destroyed chapter, they could have been slumbering deep within the chapter fortress when the chapter was destroyed. It wouldn't make sense to abandon them once they were found, but they would need a home that the deathwatch would probably be more than happy to provide. It explains how a Black Shield Dreadnought could exist, too. helterskelter
What happened to the Lamenter dreadnought? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325343-deathwatch-dreadnought-fluff/#findComment-4485859 Share on other sites
lfhoule
What happened to the Lamenter dreadnought? Still with his kill team, I would presume. Tho' thinking about it: it's another fluff bit with dreadnoughts from the Black Library books that has yet to make it to the tabletop (other being Chapter Master Dreads): dreads as actual members of Deathwatch Kill teams. Yeah, TDA is nice, and you can use another FOC slot to bring a dread into the army, but there is something fun in having dedicated dreadnoughts to a team. leth
In the recent novel there is currently a crimson fist that was interred in a dreadnaught after being juried on a mission, so there is that.
