Assault squads with combat shields

Hi guys,

I'm wondering what people's opinions are on legion assault squads equipped with combat shields.

Gaming wise I realise that they're not magnificent (only a minor inv. save) and are an additional expense, but I was also wondering what peopel thought of them aesthetically.

I'm running a Dark Angel Legion list, and the squad has knightly helms and robes (full on Caliban style) and was thinking of using Brettonian shields for a bit more of the knightly theme. Could then add some heraldry or something interesting.

i like the idea, but not sure how well it will look in execution. Does anyone have an example of similar and do you think it'd look good, or just a bit rubbish?

Thanks guys and look forward to hearing opinions :)

Related to this, it would be interesting to see what people do use for assault squad combat shields in 30k?

do you just use the 40k combat shields from the new assault squad? or fantasy battle shields?

what would people use for BA? Brettonian ones sound like an excellent choice for DA, although I think you'd still want to go with ones with as simple a design as possible.

It can get to be a lot of points, but seeing how vulnerable assault marines are as power armored models with no transport, it's probably worth it. For example if your squad takes 10 wounds, on average you'll save ~2. You paid 27 points to give the grunts shields, or you can buy two more guys for 26. Seems like a fair exchange and it will be more than worth it if you get stuck in melee against some power weapons. It will add up quick though across multiple units.

Aesthetically I think it will look amazing if you can find the right buckler.

I think it's a cool idea thematically and visually. I'm wondering if the Bret Knight shields will look a little slim width wise on a power armoured figure. I'm thinking the faction formerly known as Empire may have some better fits. I was personally thinking of making a squad of either ultramarine or white scars with dwarf shields as combat shields sans motif.

Looks like I'll have to give these a try biggrin.png

I'll try and mock up some testers for you all. I'm gonna use the blank shields from the last generation of knights, which have a convenient clamp on the back!

think they should work nicely, and compliment the planned breachers using the men at arms shields.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, really appreciate it and it's great to be part of a brilliant community

You should use these: http://images1.sw-cdn.net/product/picture/625x465_15443868_9111087_1471666899.jpg

so I can see what they look like on a model. I am not sold on the gun thing (I like the Suzerain approach more), but that is one solution for the pistol/shield hand.

I am liking the new DW shields .

They got new shields?  I know the Deathwatch squad box has that big black tower shield thing, which doesn't really work as a combat shield. The Vanguard I think are just the same old storm shields as always, unless they Deathwatchified them somehow?

I'm waiting for mid-September when all the colleges have started up again, and all the guys who use their school laser printer to make stuff are back at it.

Honestly not a fan of those, they're just...... I dunno, something about them not quite right in my mind. Thanks for the suggestion though happy.png

Plus, I already have the squad built (in need of reassembly after stripping) and I have the Bret shields sat in a bitz box!

EDIT: here's a pic (not mine) of the shields I'll be using link

@Blackorange - he looks very tasty. Looking forward to sprinkling some DW bitz through my 30k army for various projects

@BlackOrange -That's a sweet deathwatch model, but that shield is not really usable in this context. Not only is it too big to be a combat shield but the iconography doesn't really work either.

@Cloud -I am not very fond of them either, the external gun strikes me as a dumb design, but I was hoping someone would be the guinea pigpioneering modeler. :D

Terminus, here's a link to some I've just seen on Facebook. Not sure, but look better than initially thought

I can't click on it, but I do have a guy who designed a pretty cool buckler of a Hydra with an Alpha emblazoned on it. I'll probably go that way, or borrow some bits from the Dark Elves.
