HH Get Started Kit

Well, I'm in a predicament. My cousin is looking to skip right past 40k and into the grim darkness of the 30th millennium. She had picked up a start painting set, the transfer sheet and upgrade kit for Emperor's Children, and asked me what models to buy, since I had recently started Horus Heresy. I opened my mouth to say something....

but immediately closed it again as I remembered I got my collection of of her dad. Of course, her dad was just using the Horus Heresy models during 6th edition and can't remember what he started with. What would you guys say she should start with? I know that first off is at least 2 boxes of Betrayal at Calth (enough for 2250 points of models.) What else would be needed.

If she's going with Traitor Emperor's Children, Kakophoni are always a nice option and the Palantine Blades make for an awesome squad, they can also be used as Sergeants and Praetors given their more than ornate armor and weaponry.

If you're going to suggest two boxes of B@C ( which is a nice start off point given the contents ), she can also pick up more EC Mk IV shoulder pad upgrade sets and a set of EC Brass Etch to add EC details to the Contemptors and Terminators that come with the B@C box set ( and have extra stuff to add to any other vehicles she will eventually purchase ).

2 boxes of B@C makes 2250 points? I find they usually come out to quite a bit less depending on how I use them (they seem to fall around 1750~ for every 2, but then again I don't use the HQs.) But yeah, to start out, 2 boxes are a good base for any Legion army. Depending on how your cousin is building her force up, transports would be a good idea. Emperor's Children are not my area of expertise, so a good idea might be to head down to the EC Tactica thread and ask them for advice on building a III Legion force from two sets of B@C.

B@C seems like the obvious choice. You don't even need two boxes. Just run Pride of the Legion and model Veteren Tacticals instead of tacticals. Then you only need a few extras units to bring it up to 2250 points.

I'd be thinking any of the Emperors Children unique units or jetbikes. I'm not a particularly competitive player though. The HH Tactica sub-forum is probably a good place to go for more competitive army ideas.

Tanks... and tanks. Also, tanks. Let's not forget about tanks, though. While you're at it, tanks.

The B@C box is great for fleshing out a Legion or starting with ZM, but it has very little in the way of anti-armour and obviously no actual armour other than the derpy Contemptor, which I struggle to include in that category. Unless you're playing against other B@C players, you'll need tanks.

I have to agree with the few others that recommend 1 B@C box to start. It'll take a while to assemble and paint everything and by then the new box may very well be out.

I also agree with tanks and legion specific units.

I always start my armies with goals in mind by making lists at different points increments so I can tailor my purchases to suit. Starting at 1,000 and working my way up every 250 points let's me really think out my purchases and gives me a chance to at least put my newest stuff together before having other things arrive.

I never saw the appeal of 2 B@C boxes unless you have extensively planned to use those 60 PA bodies... I'd say work out a nice 2k starting list with one B@C as a core and take it from there with some resin goodies on the side!

Maybe it's just me as a brand-new player, but I can see those extra bodies coming in useful for heavy support squads and regular support squads.  Not to mention as a base for Seekers, Veterans, etc etc.  :)

i would say buy 1 B@C and then an extra squad of MK4 marines seperately so that you have a nice block of 2 20 man squads.

then flesh out from there with kakophoni/ palentine blades and some phoenix terminators, plus a peator.

for a start in anti armour i would recommend a sicarian venator and a deredo

See I'm looking at adding another B@C to my stuff (not even started assembling yet, waiting for Inferno for builds) because the next box is such an unknown entity.

Then many drop pods but knowing my luck the VIth don't like drop pods or believe in recon in the book...

BAC is literally on down to its last few boxes according to our local manager. Smaller stores wont be getting restocks. Get it quick if you want them, its by far the best way to start 30k. Theres actually very little more I want in my HH army that doesnt come in that box.

I confess, I have 4 boxes of Betrayal at Calth for my upcoming Word Bearer Legion needs.

...I actually wound up getting 5. Two of which haven't been opened yet, so if the rumored Prospero box comes out and it has a good amount of generic Mk II/Mk III, I can kitbash with a couple boxes of that.
