StruManChu
Greetings, dear Frater! To ensure we have variety within our Deathwatch, and because I wanted the information myself, I've gone through all the known official Space Marine chapters listed on Lexi and have catalogued a list of all of the chapters that share symbols with those we get in the Veterans box. Note that I've allowed for little to no conversion work to be done with these, but I'm sure more would be possible via the proper application of green stuff and patience. Blood Angels/Salamanders/Flesh Tearers/Silver Skulls - - None. The symbol is their own. While there are many Chapter symbols that use wings, skulls and lightning bolts, I'm of the opinion that these are just that bit too unique to fudge into something else. Ultramarines - Imperius Reavers - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperius_Reavers - You'll need to paint a red sword, but that's it. White Scars - Exemplars - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Exemplars - I left this off initially, but it might just work/be fudge-able. Imperial/Crimson Fists - Contenders - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Contenders - Excoriators - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Excoriators (Paint the Lightning Bolts on around the Fist) - Iron Fists - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Iron_Fists - Subjugators - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Subjugators Dark Angels - Angels Redeemed - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Angels_Redeemed Iron Hands - Dark Hands - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dark_Hands - Emperor's Hands - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Emperor%27s_Hands Raven Guard - Hawk Lords - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Hawk_Lords - Knights of the Raven - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Knights_of_the_Raven - Storm Falcons - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Storm_Falcons - Maybe. Not sure about this one, but I bet someone could make it work. Space Wolves - Red Wolves - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Red_Wolves - Shadow Wolves - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Shadow_Wolves Black Templars - Astral Knights (kind of?) - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Astral_Knights (Look at the picture of the Marine, not the chapter symbol) - Hospitallers - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Hospitallers Novamarines (Skull in Star) - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Novamarines - Aurora Chapter - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Aurora_Chapter File out the skull, fill it in with some Green Stuff and paint the hoopy bit over it - Dark Sons - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dark_Sons (Similar to above) - Metamarines - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Metamarines - Sons of Medusa - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Sons_of_Medusa Just chop off some of the points. Although no one's going to care that much if you don't Mentor Legion (Bird Head) - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Mentors - Black Consuls - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Black_Consuls - Emperor's Storm - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Emperor%27s_Storm - Raptors - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Raptors_(Chapter) - Storm Hawks - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Storm_Hawks - Paint the Lighting Bolt coming from the beak. - Warriors Adept - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warrior_Adepts - White Consuls - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Consuls Red Talons (Claw) - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Red_Talons - Brazen Claws - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Brazen_Claws - Iron Talons - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Iron_Talons Brazen Minotaurs - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Brazen_Minotaurs - Tauran - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Tauran - White Minotaurs - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Minotaurs Howling Griffons - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Howling_Griffons - Knights of Gryphonne - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Knights_of_Gryphonne Now, as I've said, this is just from the stuff on Lexi that I could find in about an hour, so this is by no means as exhaustive list. They are all official GW chapters though, so that's something. Feel free to let me know any that I've missed! sockwithaticket
Point of order there is no Minotaurs pad in the DW box, the pad you mean can be used for the other 3 Chapters you've named, but the Minotaurs symbol is substantially different. There's also a bunch of chapters that while they have a name have no official iconography, so you can modify colour schemes with the existing pads to suit your requirements. That Guy Matt
I'm working on a Fire Lord. I've filed off the ring around the Imperial Fists badge and will paint the flames around the black painted icon. Xisor
Ooh, this is excellent! I'm thrilled. :D This little factoid you've uncovered (re:Ultramarines/Blood Angels/Salamanders/White Scars) means I have some relatively reduced need to covert the lads from Overkill too, as it's only the two Ultramarines, Blood Angel, Salamander and White Scar that pose serious issues. Hopefully not insurmountable - really just depends how much can be easily filed off. (I'm very keen to avoid First Found except where [by my modelling standard] impossible!) I've updated the list. I should've checked the FW site. I'd assumed they'd gotten rid of the Minotaur pads when they dropped most of the other ones. In fairness though, it's similar enough that I probably wouldn't begrudge someone using the plastic pad in the kit instead of buying 10 from Forgeworld or paying premium price from an eBay bits-seller if they really wanted to have a Minotaur. I'm working on a Fire Lord. I've filed off the ring around the Imperial Fists badge and will paint the flames around the black painted icon. Yeah, I wondered about these guys, but I couldn't tell if the Fist icon would be too big? I'd be keen to see how it goes. Ooh, this is excellent! I'm thrilled. I totally understand, which is why I went to such lengths to get a list out! Glad you approve. In the interests of getting around the First Founding chapters, have a look at this guy - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Exemplars. I left them off because I'm not totally sure, but it does look a lot like the White Scar symbol with something weird on top of it. Saul Invictus
Good list, but the Imperius Reavers actually use the Ultramarines chapter badge on both pauldrons, one side with a sword through, but the other is just standard. Ordo Machinum
Its funny how so many chapters share yhr same badge, just different colors. I was actually thinking of using a colour chart (one column of 17 pad base colours and rows of symbol colours) 17 pads with 17 x 17 colour options - where colours match, instant blackshield choice! 289 combinations - 17 matched blackshields... definitely should cover most chapters... Father Mehman
The skull pad can be used for the Silver Skulls and, with a little nod and a wink, the Doom Legion. henrywalker
On a similar note I've just built up a deathwatch rhino and I gave the gunner the ad mech shoulder pad that comes with the kit. Reckon that makes sense for deathwatch? Xisor
Hmm, the Salamanders icon *could* be painted as Star Dragons. Paint a neck on and do it in the right colours, you're sort-of sorted. SW1
Having fun with the DW kit and pads. A lot of gs'ing but also using the pads that have come with 2 Vet kits. Currently got these pads done ... Go a load more in the works. Even the white scars pad can be amended if you trim the details off leaving the lightning bolt in place. tvih
Are the Iron Fists considered official these days? Back when I was figuring out which Codex chapter to go for (as BT still had their own book then) I seem to recall Iron Fists having a fan-made origin? tvih
Huh. They're indeed in How To Paint Space Marines back from 2004 already, hadn't noticed that (nor was it referenced in Lexicanum which I usually check for info). Well, I guess I'll have to paint some of them up as I always liked the color scheme, mainly as tacticals I suppose, as Crimson Fists don't have so many of them. Not sure how I'm going to achieve the slightly blue tint to the silver though, I tried the same for Executioners and ended up with an Astral Knight More on topic though, nice listing definitely. I only bought a 5-man kill team and making some more from existing models so I suppose I won't have a chance to use too many pads, though! Xisor
A little blast from the past here, but has anyone been through the variety of known Ultima Founding (and any other new additions) keeping an eye on those that can be checked against this list? By my reckoning the Solar Hawks (pre-Ultima) are viable off of the Mentors icon (simply paint the black hood on/slap on some smooth green stuff). Similarly, the Rift Stalkers are a prime fit - just black-on-white for the Raven Guard icon. But I haven't been keeping a close eye on the matter. Has anyone else got a more thorough record to hand? Or has access to a suitable array of resources to check more thoroughly? If not, at least the Solar Hawks & Rift Stalkers are viable. Now I just need to acquire some more Marines...
