Ultramarines 30K Kill Team "Honorem"

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm a bit of an 'On and Off' warhammer fan, usually gaining interest in it for a few months and then losing interest just as fast again. This means I rarely finish an army/project that I set myself. However, I've always been a big fan of Kill Team, and with the new release again what better time to decide to make one! I just really like the idea of a team of individual soldiers, each with their own talents and abilities that they bring to the team and mission. With the Ultramar Battle Muster Painting Challenge going on over in the Ultramarines section of the board and Kill Team forces being quite small, I felt now was a good time to start a project that will keep me motivated, and is small enough to actually get finished before I likely lose interest again for a month or two.

So after that small blabber of useless information, time to get on to the good stuff! The models comprise a sort of Kill team I've been working on fluff-wise and model-wise called "Kill Team Honorem". They are made to be a sort of dual purpose unit, one that I can use in a regular game alongside my main 2000 Point 30k Ultramarine army, or one that I can use in a 250pt game of Killteam. Therefore, I've written up two small lists for them for the different game circumstances. The regular list will eventually be expanded upon so that the veteran squad is a full 10 man squad.

Kill Team:

Apothecarion Detachment (50pts)
····Legion Apothecary [Augury Scanner]
········Legiones Astartes [Legion Specific Rules]

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (199pts) [2x Combi-weapon, Heavy Bolter and Suspensor Web, 6x Legion Veteran Space Marines, Marksmen, Melta Bombs]
····Legion Veteran Sergeant [Power Weapon]
····Legiones Astartes [Legion Specific Rules]

Regular List:

+ HQ (120pts) +

Legion Centurion (120pts) [Artificer Armour, Power Weapon, Refractor Field]
····Legiones Astartes [Legion Specific Rules]
····May be upgraded to one of these Consul roles: [Vigilator]

+ Elites (237pts) +

Apothecarion Detachment (60pts)
····Legion Apothecary [Artificer Armour, Augury Scanner]
········Legiones Astartes [Legion Specific Rules]

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad (177pts) [Combi-weapon, Heavy Bolter and Suspensor Web, 5x Legion Veteran Space Marines, Marksmen, Melta Bombs]
····Legion Veteran Sergeant [Combi-weapon]
····Legiones Astartes [Legion Specific Rules]

Anyway, here are the pics!

This guy represents the Vigilator. I have magnetised his head so that I can swap his helmet out for a bare head when I settle on one that I like the look of!

Also, excuse the hound. He is a sort of a wound marker for the Vigilator.
Hope you all enjoyed reading/looking at the figures, and I hope to get in another update soon!

Apologies for the double post.

Managed to get the Vigilator mostly finished. After taking pictures it looks like I'll have to go back and fix the crest, and he is still waiting on some transfers for his shoulder pads. But other than that, hes pretty much done!

Thank you for looking, James

Cool project, and lovely painting. The gold on the crest helps the black helm and the brush both read nicely, and draws attention to the otherwise fairly anonymous black helm – so he looks both sneaky and in charge; nice work.

Thank you! I wasn't sure about the black helm, it is a rather blank space and had trouble trying to bring out some detail in it. I'm surprised you can see the gold on the crest in the pictures, they aren't the greatest pics but the best I can do without a proper lighting setup!

I really like the blue shade you have there. I liked the hound in the original post, gives the kill team a little extra character.

Stole the blue from this small tutorial in battlebunnies:

http://battlebunnies.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/kaelo-pre-heresy-ultramarine-paints.html

Really nice way of painting the blue for somebody like me who isn't a very good painter, or doesn't dare to attempt edge highlighting! tongue.png

And I'm glad you like the hound, when I first saw it I knew I had to have one. I'm just not sure how I'm going to go about painting it, or what colour to paint it for that matter!

Interesting non bright shade of blue...different

I'm not really a fan of the mega bright Ultramarines, I think this strikes a nice balance between super bright and too dark. At least I hope it does.

Apologies for double post again, I have another update!

Finished two more marines and the hound. I decided to give the marines a black stripe going down their helmet to show some sort of veteran status, and to make them stand out from the other marines in my army.

Tried to make the hound look like a rottweiler. Not sure if I completely achieved it but I'm happy with the outcome!

This is where the Kill Team stands so far!

Still need to buy some Ultramarine decals for them all!

Blue/black Ultramarines? What is this I sense? tongue.png

Looks great, Wul. Solid blue scheme and very nice idea with the hound for the Vigilator. Makes me think of Gladiator. Keen to see these guys finished.

I knew this army/kill team reminded me of someone else... :P

Top work, Wulox! They look great and suitably weather-beaten. :tu:

As I said elsewhere, I really love these. Excellent stuff. thumbsup.gif

Thank you! And I appreciate the work you've put into running the Battle Muster, its made me pull my finger out and actually get painting for once!

I'm not copying, I promise! tongue.png

Although I will admit I keep your Ultras in mind everytime I assemble/paint mine as yours are stunning! I love the Hound too, I'm a big lover of dogs so knew I had to have one somewhere in my army!

Many thanks, I did try and make them look a bit more gritty than the usual clean shiny Ultras! biggrin.png

Thank you for all the comments guys, its greatly appreciated! Will try and get another update up in a day or two, nothing today though as the Packers game will have me busy for the rest of the day!

Really happy with how this Kill Team is coming along, I honestly think this is the most minis I've ever painted in this amount of time. tongue.png

Managed to get another guy finished today!

Unlike the others, his bolter is painted fully metallic because it was originally a RG bolter but had the symbol removed, but it was a bit messy looking.

Niiiccceeee...what's the dogs name???

Thank you! If you mean where did I get it from, then hes from the FW Event Only Imperial Enforcer. If you mean what his actual name is, I haven't given him one yet but he will eventually get one as will everyone else in the killteam!

Wow the newest guy looks great! Really like the posing and bits choice on him.

Many thanks. The whole kill team originally had the same helmet, but I decided against it and ripped them all off.

Looking great, man. Everything ties really well together. The dark blue, the gritty black, the weathering and war-torn look, and the basing's great too. Incidentally, Mk5 helms look great in this scheme.

Thank you very much! I admit I've only gone for a war-torn look because I find it easier to paint than pristine marines! I wouldn't go as far to say the basing is great though, it's simple and easy because I'm lazy! tongue.png

That's some sombre Ultras, loving it!

Many thanks, glad you like them!

I've got two more guys done now, leaving just the apothecary to finish. However I've found out I can't paint white, at all.

Anyway, here are the last two veterans!

You might notice they've both got a black right knee. I decided I wanted to tie them in with my main force so the rest of the Ultras I have will be getting the black knee as well, with the squad number on once I get around to buying some decals.

So all I have left now for the Kill Team is to finish the Apothecary and buy/apply decals to them all!

These Ultras are looking really good mate, you should be proud. The thing with Heresy Era characters I've noticed is that they don't necessarily have to follow the same marking and identification conventions as their 40k predecessors, so having mainly blue armour with some small areas of white on the apothecary wouldn't go amiss. Looking forward to seeing how they look together :)

Sort of ruined the original apothecary model so will have to make a new one! I think it's going to have to be small areas of white to be honest to get him looking ok. tongue.png

Also found a sheet of old ultras decals so though I'd apply the Ultima symbol whilst I wait for the FW decal sheet to use some of the more fancy veteran markings etc on them as well.

Looking good! Did you have any difficulties with these older decals? I have used the IF ones from the old Tactical Squad box and they're a real pain to put onto curved surfaces, even with decal medium to soften them... dry.png

They weren't too bad however the sheet I used wasn't that old, it came with an attack bike I bought about year ago. I did make slight cuts into the decal itself though like on this tutorial I found:

On some of the marines if you look closely you can see the cuts but on most its not too bad, I will try and get a close up pic of the decal/shoulder pad but using an iphone camera is proving to be slightly difficult to get it to look decent enough when focused on the pad.
