Doctor Perils
BEIGE !!! Seriously, looks incredibly good I'd try and add some contrast somehow: perhaps some gaudy gold filligree on his armour, gun and/or cloak? Steampunk is often depicted with quite a grimy, oily industrial aspect, and the whole grandioseness of the Victorian era can often be forgotten (*resists the urge to go out and buy a box tomorrow, feels the urge ever creeping forward, I think I'm losing my inner battle...*) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4492942 Share on other sites
helterskelter
I may try adding some gold trims in! I had considered doing it before I put the pics up but simultaneously I didn't want to go to OTT on the rank and file. Thanks for the praise :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493345 Share on other sites
MoGuy
Aren't Skitarii inherently steampunk (by design)? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493355 Share on other sites
Xisor
I'd say so, MoGuy, but not quite to the extent as, say, the Vostroyans. Colour scheme can really alter their look. (The FW Secutarii in colour alone look a lot more 'serious SF', for example.) My own, with a very similar coat-scheme, but a different weapon one (a dirty 'hazard yellow') end up looking a lot less steampunk, a lot more... nuclearpunk? Who knows. Doctor Perils
Skitarii (and other elements of the Mechanicum) definitely have strong Steampunk elements and aspects (and/or Dieselpunk, Cyberpunk, etc.), but they don't always have a Steampunk feel. Of course, Steampunk can have as many divergent and vast definitions as one may wish, but it generally includes many industrial era and victorian era aesthetics - traditional martian skitarii just don't put that aspect forward all that much. I feel helterskelter does :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493475 Share on other sites
Teetengee
the cloak seems a bit off to me, perhaps the colour? it just doesn't look like it is the right material. helterskelter
Here's a couple of reference photos for the kind of thing I've been looking at. It could potentially be the lighting/flash is throwing the colour off so I can try and take some better photos later. I definitely wanted to step away from the traditional mechanicus paint jobs mind, and brown isn't a colour we see heavily unless it's on tree people and even then it's not all that common http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz184/Lamenterkyle/Mobile%20Uploads/images-7_zpsexikxa3j.jpg http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz184/Lamenterkyle/Mobile%20Uploads/images-8_zpslabujd0g.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493620 Share on other sites
Xisor
And here's what we should really be shooting for... In fairness to Teetengee - there's an element of 'dusty' to the brown, rather than rich or leather? More like Mal Reynolds' tight-pants sort of a brown coat? JeffTibbetts
Yes! This last pic is roughly 723 times better. I love this scheme! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493872 Share on other sites
Doctor Perils
Yes, I think master Tibbetts is correct in his estimation of the improvements :P How about some slight weathering/scuff marks on the cloak? And I'd probably add a little something to the edges or near the edges (either more scuff marks or some little gold trim? Perhaps some gold trim could be added to the Alpha only?) When I decide on the colour of the base/what kind of area I'd put them in I'll add the weathering to the cloak then so don't worry it'll come :p And that is a fantastic idea for the alpha. The question is maul or shock prod? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4493942 Share on other sites

Battybattybats
Ok i love the woodgrain! It seems a bit irrational, but then perhaps your forgeworld can treat wood till it's as tough as adamantium or bolster their vehicles with force fields that function the same as metal armour. But whatever justification that looks nifty! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4494198 Share on other sites
Teetengee
I don't give a damn if it makes sense; I want more! EDIT: I wrote out some flufftification for a steampunk forge world in the Liber Cluster a while back, if you wanted to look at it for inspiration: Navitorci. JeffTibbetts
I didn't think that would look cool at all. I was wrong. Now maybe clean it up a bit and up the contrast on the grain a touch. Once you finish off the trim I think it'll look better. As proof of concept, I'd say it's a go. helterskelter
@ batty bats: oh it's purely from an aesthetic stand point, my head fluff its a layer of wooden panels over the armour. Though I'm still trying to figure out why admech would be aesthetic :p @teetengee: I shall have a look, thanks! @jefftibbets: what I've done is layer 3/4 tones worth of streaks down the panel, is it just a case of going 1 or 2 tones darker to finish? @mehman: is that in a good way or? :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4494341 Share on other sites
Isolia
It looks amazing ! The leather, the wood, the brassy goldy decorations ... Arkaniss
The wooden look is marvellous. I strongly approve! For fluff reasons say it's a veneer or the armour is just made to look like wood... or they've made their own armoured trees. Whatever floats your boat I'm just keen to see more no matter how it's justified in the fluff! Steampunk Skitarii look awesome Edit: righting inglish iz tuff Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325564-steampunk-skitarii/#findComment-4494550 Share on other sites
