Movie casting for HH

Sorry, but James Dean is a terrible, terrible actor in my opinion. The way I see Sanguinius is not that he's the most charismatic (Horus), the prettiest (Fulgrim), the greatest tacticians (Dorn, Perturabo), etc, but that he can do everything really well. Every time I tried to think of who would be good for that role, Chris Pine kept popping into my head.

Say whatever you want about his acting chops, but Dean's got the captivating, angelic look which is an integral part of Sanguinius' persona, and is what leaves the Pine pick wanting :)

I'd rather someone who maybe didn't look quite perfect but could actually act, vs someone looking perfect and having the dead eyes and acting ability of a mannequin. Which makes me wonder how the hell Brad Pitt keeps getting work (recent answer: he started his own production company).

No, sorry. It's really apparent how bad he is when he's working next to really good actors like Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, etc. The director of Oceans Eleven had him eating in every scene so that the muscles in his face would actually move and people would know he was alive and breathing. But that's starting to get off topic, so let's keep it focused .

Pitt is excellent in several films I've seen. The Assassination of Jesse James and 12 Monkeys in particular.

He's absolutely brilliant in Guy Ritchie's Snatch playing an Irish Traveller. I never really liked him before I saw that film, but he was very good in that movie. That being said, I can't see him fitting any 30k character well.

Based on Jesse James (that performance is miles ahead of his one in Snatch, I'd say) he could do a good brooding fatalist. I've yet to see a Heresy character for whom I'd cast him, though.

Who for Abaddon?

Pitt terrible in your eyes? He was fantastic in Fight Club along an excellent Norton. And now, now, not fair derailing the thread yourself and having all the fun getting the last word :P

My choice would be as follows, I will be going for the characters I can actually think of as far as actors go (some ideas may be similar to what people already suggested):

Mark Strong - Horus

Stephen Lang - Rogal Dorn

Kevin McKidd - Guilliman

Harry Looyd - Fulgrim

Michael Fassbender - Alpharius/Omegon/Alpha Legion

James Purefoy - Corax

Bill Nighy - Mortarion

Jason Momoa - Angron

Tom Hiddlestone - Curze

Charles Dance - Malcador

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau - Lion

Ciaran Hinds - Emperor

Jerome Flynn - Calas Typhon

Til Schweiger - Garviel Loken

Ralph Moeller - Russ

Lorenzo Richelmy - Saul Tarvitz

Tom Wu - Jaghatai Khan

Jason Statham - Ferrus

Thats all I can come up with for now..

Till Schweiger und Ralf Möller?!?!?
  • 2 months later...

I want Sean Bean for Russ, Fimmel is too much of a pretty boy. And I'm putting through an offer for Christian Bale as Curze.

Also, someone help me put in Viggo Mortensen. And I think Heath Ledger would have been a hell of a Sanguinius.

Finally, and I'm strangely feeling strong about this: The Rock with long hair as The Emperor (or shaved as Horus...).

Ok, I'll give it a try...

Lion El'Jonson - Lee Pace (played Thranduil, cold hearted, feisty, tactician, has a dark side)

Fulgrim - Jared Leto (can very well embody feminine characters)

Perturabo - Mads Mikkelsen (he has this calculating, withdrawn face, he played Hannibal Lecter! need more?)

Jaghatai Khan - Jason Momoa (two words: Khal Drogo!)

Leman Russ - Tyler Mane (played Sabertooth in X-Men, that's nearly Russ ^^)

Rogal Dorn - Stephen Lang (needs to be a bit bulkier but besides that, he looks like Dorn)

Conrad Kurze - Ben Foster (have a look on his role in Hostage, he just looks like Curze)

Sanguinius - Brad Pitt or Heath Ledger (speaks for itself)

Ferrus Manus - Liev Schreiber (just looks like him and I can imagine him to be as cold and then bursting)

Angron - Jeez what a name....the guy who plays the Mountain in GoT (pure brutal might)

Roboute Guiliman - Russel Crow (my personal embodiment of a Roman general)

Mortarion - Ralph Fiennes (he played a lot of villains and moody characters)

Magnus - Benedict Cumberbatch (played Sherlock & Dr. Strange = Magnus)

Horus Lupercal - Dwayne Johnson (as mentioned earlier)

Lorgar - Michael Fassbender (after watching Macbeth, it just feels right to place him here; he is able to play a troubled character in such a way!)

Vulkan - MIchael Clarke Duncan (RIP, big, massive good guy)

Corax - Tom Hiddleston (why not? fits more than Curze)

Alpharius Omegon - Luke Evans (that's a tough one, there is a better choice though)

The Emperor - an average of all the faces above, to enhance his divine appearance, he has to be CGI

Mortensen as... damn, that's a tricky one. How about Aquillon or Valdor?

Mark Strong for Little Horus?

Fiennes would be a better Horus than Mortarion (he'd nail Horus' humour and good nature in the early books as well as the grandiose villain he becomes). I'd have Andy Serkis or Mikkelssen as Mort; both of them have the better voice for it (take Serkis' Witch King voice, add bass and phlegm and you have Mortarion).

Khal Drogo is precisely why Momoa shouldn't be the Khan. The Khan should be artful, regal - Chow Yun-Fat would fit him to a T. Momoa also just doesn't fit Wraight's description of the Khan.

Helen Mirren as Ilya Ravallion.

Based largely on his dancing scene in The Assassin, Chang Chen for Jubal Khan.

I agree with you that Chow is definitely the better choice in terms of acting.

Looking at him and comparing him with official artwork for the Khan doesn't fit for me. I think that imho he would be better casted as Yesugei.

Maybe we can meet halfway if I propose Ken Watanabe? ;)

I feel like Mad Mikkelson's acting in Hannibal might make him a good Emperor.  I mean, his Hannibal has the detached obsession of a supernatural figure, someone who is constantly above everyone around him with byzantine plans and plots to manipulate every person he comes into contact with, someone who simultaneously seems to not care about anything of this world and care about every minute detail of his surroundings.  I guess this all sort of depends on how we view the Emperor, but if we're going with the calculating, cold, alien god, he could be quite good at it.
