An Emperor's Sword joins the ranks:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/2/830316_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/2/830317_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/2/830318_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/2/830319_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/2/830320_sm-.JPG

According to Lexicanum 2 Chapters have borne the Emperor's Swords moniker and both have been destroyed in the 41st Millenium. This battle brother is the sole survivor of the second chapter, whose homeworld turned out to be a dormant Necron tomb world. While he was on secondment with the Deathwatch, the Necrons awoke. As far as is known, he is the sole surviving member of the Chapter. Consequently, he has been given dispensation to keep not just his right shoulder pad, but also his Storm Shield in his chapters heraldic colours. The scrolls attached to his backpack are a list of every member of the Emperor's Blades lost in the homeworld's destruction.

This particular marine came from numerous Ravenwing bits I had lying around and not knowing what to do with them until browsing Lexicanum's list of loyalist Chapters and discovering that neither iteration of the Emperor's Swords had established colour scheme and iconography, but certainly posessed cool back stories for a DW member. Given that Ravenwing symbols are actually pretty similar to those of the Emperor's Children and the similar nomenclature of the Swords to former glory boys of the Imprium I thought to go with the EC's purple as the base colour, but replace their gold  trim with silver; a nod to potential origins (we all suspect/know the High Lords of Terra have tried to utilise the geneseed of Traitor Legions in the past...).

Silas7 - ah, that's a shame. We'll all be here if you do find the time for a plog.

Vel'Cona - For your shoulder pad problem: Shapeways or get inventive with what's currently out there, either pre-moulded (pads from Stern- and Vanguard sprues) or blank ones plus transfers (there's a few symbols on the bog-standard sheet you can use for existing or made up chapters). Make up some Chapters if you want or flesh out the ones that don't actually have established iconograhy like I've done with the Emperor's Sword above.

I have that pad and was wondering if it's possible to add it to my project. Consider the idea borrowed. ;)

Veteran Sergeant Dacian:

He sports a number of fangs from various Tyranid creatures as trophies commemorating successful engagements with the foul species. The eye catching, if rather incongruous and impractical, skull trophy atop his back pack belonged to a Tyranid Prime from a tendril of Hive Fleet Kraken that his Deathwatch Kill Team stalked through the jungles of a Death World. Dacian bested the beast in hand to hand combat with a ferocity that his men reported was extraordinary to behold. While every space marine hates all xenos and descendents of the Ultramarines have a particular hatred for Tyranids, nothing quite compares to the vitriolic loathing the sons of Sotha feel for the Hive Fleet that so nearly exterminated them. A discussion was had with him about removing the skull during combat engagements. Suffice to say it has remained in place, a symbol of the vengeance and righteous fury that burns within Dacian, a testament to his prowess as a warrior and the beginning of a collection that indicates he's just getting started.

SW1 - yeah, do it man. He'd probably quite like to find out he's not the only one left after all!

Vel'Cona - thank you, brother. It was actually a lot easier than I was expecting, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Vel'Cona - Thanks a lot. I love the Kromlech bioncs, got plenty more where that came from and the  combi flamer is easily one of the best weapon patterns ever designed (before I felt compelled to start sticking extras on), it's a shame you can only get it in singles as part of the FW character conversion set. As for what's next, let's just say I recently finished reading my copy of The Anphelion Project...

Prot - thank you very much, I do try to inject some character into each one.

recon0321 - try the link below, though there's really not much more than what I already posted, which was part of the attraction; Deathwatch models are great opportunity to explore the lesser known chapters.

This fellow was inspired by recently purchasing and reading the Anphelion Project 2nd ed. softback. A fellow Tyranid hunter for the sergeant.

Went over the helmet power cables for the Scythe as I wasn't feeling the previous iteration:

And I re-based some of my models that pre-dated this thread:

There's an Angel Porphyr, Novamarine, Space Wolf, Executioner and Mortifactor there for those unfamiliar with my Deathwatch postings elsewhere on the site (Hall of Honour thread linked in my sig if you care enough to check it out).

Prot - thank you and of course, no one polishes and maintains armour quite like the astartes. The bases are a mixture of Dragon Forge's Concrete Rubble and Secret Weapon's Flagstone offerings. Perhaps, but you don't exactly need to go nuts. The moulded pads I've used (apart from the Raptor) are all in GW or FW kits, though admittedly the Angel Porphyr pad is from the Landspeeder Vengeance and the Mortifactor has a skull press moulded from a Legion of the Damned sculpt. Depends how much you're willing to pay bits sites I guess, per pad it's not  much different to going the Shapeways route really.

Vel'Cona - cheers, man. Always looking for ways to avoid standard 'holding boltgun' poses, it's nice when they come off well enough to warrant comment. It is indeed a DA blade, those and the Chaos marine combat blades are something I often top up on on bits sites (they tend to be oddly cheap) as I find them a bit more interesting than the ordinary Tac squad ones.

Got a decent way through a member of the Silver Eagles after a bit of a Deathwatch break:

Chapter history for those who don't know anything about them::http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Silver_Eagles

Not a lot of existing information(!), but a handy canon chapter to help me utilise a pad I would never use with my Crimson Tears.

Thanks to the 4 day Easter weekend I made enough progress to finish 3 more members of my Watch Company in less time than it usually seems to take me to do just 1. Huzzah!

Finished Carcharodon:

Look at the trim on the pad, they are technically for the other arm... but, in my opinion, that is such a small detail that most people won't notice, especially when the models look as good as they do!

Also, where is the gun on the Carcharodon from, Anvil maybe?

Edited by robofish7591

Vel'Cona - Pretty much exactly my thought process while putting him together. The gun's there because the Watch-Captain won't let him leave the fortress without one (and it's a combi melta so he has an excuse to get close), as for usage... let's just say he doesn't fill out many armoury requisition forms for ammunition.

Irbis - thank you.  I've seen you mention your issue with these shoulder pads elsewhere. I've always considered them to be the for the left as for years they were the only option other than the metal upgrade, so it became very normal to see them on everyone's kill teams there. I've personally never seen the fluff that states they're for the right arm after a marine finishes his period of service, but if you could link it or provide the source I'd be very interested to read it.

Robofish - thanks for the kind words. Yep, the combi-melta is one of Anvil's Lance Carbines. I thought it looked like older tech which the Carcharodons would probably have a preference for given the millenia they spent out on their own without links to the Imperium for new stuff. I'm intrigued, what about the trim indicates that the pad should be on the right?

If you take a look at the trim you will notice that one side goes further towards the bottom of the shoulder pad.  The side that goes further down is the side that is supposed to be on the back.  Off the top of my head, grey knights and space wolves also have pads with trim that does that.

Its such a minor issue though since it doesn't have any decoration that needs to be forward facing like the wolf heads on the space wolf trim, plus like you said, it was the only option besides the metal ones.  As for a fluff reason, I'm not sure.  Since the box that had those pads is pretty old, maybe it was just old fluff that the deathwatch insignia got moved when a marine returned to his chapter? I'm not really sure.

Ah right, I thought it might be something like that. Some of the resin and now plastic mk. IV pads have similar trim and I'd assumed the bit that came down furthest would be facing forward (as it were) because it would have a greater chance at blocking bullets/blows coming at the face/upper chest.
