Thinking about getting into Horus Heresy

So, with the state of 40k entering uncertain times, I've been looking more and more into 30k. I really like the rules for the Solar Auxilia, because I really love my Imperial guard.

I was thinking about my options for what I could do for a 30k army with what I have in Imperial guard models. I was thinking of using my Kasrkin as Valetarii, and I can field 2 squads of basic guys. I'd be looking into getting 6 more basic kasrkin to field a full 3.

I would love to have actual horus heresy models, but I desperately love my kasrkin. I know that some folks are big on WYSIWYG, and I am as well, to a degree (In that, I like my stuff to be WSYWIG, but my wallet is my limiting factor). I know that many folks that have shelled out the cash for the FW models might be a bit miffed at someone proxing with their guard models. But would the fine folks here have the same issue?

I have some Thunderbolts on the way (which hopefully I get soon), which will be my air support, I have 3 knights (one built, 2 in the queue). And I have 4 leman russes with plans for a 5th. My 5th tank will be a demolisher kit.

My Plan for tanks is to field 2 assault squadrons, one with dual demolishers, and the other with dual executioners. This would be in addition to my Vanquisher with tank commander.

I'd use my guardsmen as my lasrifle section.

Now, I really like the Dracosan, and I'd get a couple to transport my valetari squads.

I also have a raven guard army, that I started with the BaC box, and currently have them outfitted for 40k, but it would be an easy matter to get them 30k compliant, rules wise anyway.

Is there any advice that y'all can give me?

The Regiments of the Solar Auxilia and Imperial Army are vast and varied, and I wouldn't be out of place.

The list sounds about right, although it might be suboptimal to keep a Lasrifle Section in a Dracosan, but that's really minor. And I think most people here wouldn't mind, although I also think most people would ideally like to see a bit of Heresy-era flair to your troopers.

Dude, the Kasrkin are amazing models. They need to release a plastic kit for them.

I'm always happy to see Kasrkin.

I too wish for this...

i'd have NO prob playin' against counts as SA/IM. Though you gotta be careful, the SA list is rather strong and can lose you some friends if you're not careful.

So, the list I'm thinking of for SA, is this:

HQ:

Lord Marshal Charnabal Sabre and Volkite Serpentia, Iron Halo.

Tank Commander

Troops:

Tercio x2

Dracosan w/demolisher

Valeteris Storm Section, Prime w/charnabal Sabre and plasma pistol

Tercio

Lasrifle section

Aegis line w/ammo dump

Fast attack:

Thunderbolt w/ground attack augurs x2

Leman Russ Strike Sqdn, single vanquisher w/lascannon and armored ceremite

Heavy Support:

Assault Sqdn

Demolishers x2

Assault Sqdn

Exterminators x2

This would pair with my 3 knights, a Warden and 2 Paladins/Errants.

I'd of course scale for points.

The Regiments of the Solar Auxilia and Imperial Army are vast and varied, and I wouldn't be out of place.

That really has me feeling a bit more reassured.

I didn't mean it to sound like I was going to put the lasrifle section in a dracosan. I was thinking that Valeteris fit better as mech troops. I get the aesthetic choice, and Ideally I'd have the actual models to do it. Right now it's just not in the cards. The Dracosans I can handle and feel fine about. The Infantry is a bit tougher. I did run across an interesting idea, of using the scion models to make the infantry. Which could make supplementing/phasing out the kasrkin a bit cheaper than getting FW, just need to get actual volkite weapons.

I'm actually thinking that I'm going to do something a bit different. Over in the Astra Militarum subforum, I have created fluff for my Imperial Guard that has them from a planet that hosts dual cultures.

I was thinking I might want to continue that theme since my models will have different paint schemes and elements to them. My large infantry blobs are intended to be similar in theme to the Tallarn desert raiders, while my elite infantry are similar in theme to the Harakoni Warhawks.

Since the fluff I wrote for them dates their origins back to the heresy, I figured that my 30k army should also reflect that.

So the way I plan to do this is:

Valetaris with dracosans, lasrifle section (cadians, modified to look void armored) with ADL, legate commander, Engineseer Auxilia w/cortex controller, My incoming thunderbolts will be my fast attack, and using the Castellax Robots and a Thallax Cohort as my heavy support, along with my 3 knights in an allied Questoris Knight army.

In 40k my regiment has two disperate elements, and I don't know if I should try to represent this in HH or not. Perhaps I'll go with not, but keep the paint schemes for the troops and vehicles the same as my 40k forces. It should be fine and consistent with the fluff I have in mind for both of the forces as their world's mid lattitudes I envision as being very similar to the levant (pre-heresy ), and the sahara (post-heresy). Tank color schemes wouldn't change much between those environments (look at Israeli tanks versus Egyptian/Algerian tanks, the camo is very similar).

What do you think?
