terrain

I used to build my own terrain... all the white dwarf mags from a decade ago had a full article on building all kinds of terrain for a full table followed by a batrep fought over that table...

There are some websites out there full of tutorials. I'm sure someone here remembers what they are called...

As for alien jungle worlds I too was eyeballing some aquarium faux fauna.

I also try to build, "the terrain tutor" has some nice videos on YouTube that I like to watch to learn some tricks or basic advice :)

I never saw good deals on eBay on stuff that I wanted, because it's usually somehting oop and thus is up for speculation , so I started to try and build my own

Generally, I would normally suggest making your own - much more economical for a similar level of work.

Necromundicon/Ironhands has some great tutorials for making your own cheap but good-looking terrain here.

Rob Hawkins is a professional terrain maker (for GW, Privateer Press, CMON, and many others), and he often shares his efforts and tutorials on his blog here.

To paint terrain, I would suggest using internal vinyl paints - you can get colour-matched tester pots for just a few dollars, and they are much better and cheaper for painting terrain with. Plus, when you finish the tins, you can make even more scenery out of them! ;)

I plan on building a board from a core of plywood.

Starting with 4, 2'x2' panels, and later boost by 4 more.

Lay them out like a topographical map. Basically a full 4x4 foot area then work my way up and create the hills and valleys. Make it such that anything that hits a 2x2 sections edge will line up with every other 2x2 edge, so I can create a valley in the middle, or rotate all boards 180deg for a hill in the middle, or 90deg for a hill on either side of the table etc etc.

Fill in gaps with some sort of filler material. Sand, textremely and paint... then build small ruins and wooded thickets that fit in flat areas in the board that can be swapped around as needed.
