Ulrik_Ironfist
So I have two thunderbolt kits, that have no way to mount a flyer stand. I need suggestions for how to mount them atop a flyer stand. So they'll actually be usable in a game. Grand Master Belial
Sounds like you will need to use the old method of pinning the model to the base or get fancy and magnetize them with rare earth magnets. If these are the FW models then they will need to be some beefy pins. Ulrik_Ironfist
I was afraid of that. They're recasts, I can tell by the type of resin used, it's definitely not FW, but it's still substantial. So I'll need to get some thin plywood and dowel rods, and some drill bits and make some flyer stands for them. elmo
You can also go down the route of using a dremmel or similar to cut out a recess for the + of the flying stand. This is what I ended up doing for a Barracuda and TigerShark and as long as you are careful it works... A.T.
I just superglued a valkyrie flyer 'socket' to the underside of mine, though you'd need to scour the bitz sites for them. Shamansky
is it a big problem to glue some sprue peices to form a frame for the cross? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325824-thunderbolts/#findComment-4501811 Share on other sites
Ulrik_Ironfist
I just superglued a valkyrie flyer 'socket' to the underside of mine, though you'd need to scour the bitz sites for them. I thought about that. But that doesn't seem to be a common piece. is it a big problem to glue some sprue peices to form a frame for the cross? I had that thought too, but I didn't know if it would be stable or not, considering the trapezoidal cross section of the sprues. You can also go down the route of using a dremmel or similar to cut out a recess for the + of the flying stand. This is what I ended up doing for a Barracuda and TigerShark and as long as you are careful it works... Problem with that is, there are landing gear bays in the way, which would make it unstable. I did find a valkyrie stand and socket on a bitz site for under $10, so that might be the direction I go, considering I'd like to have stands to go with the thunderbolts, rather than use stands from other flyers (so I can field all of my flyers at once, mua-ha-ha-haa...). Jacinda
You could make a decorative stand like a rock pile, ruined column or even a blasted tree. Ulrik_Ironfist
The stand isn't the problem. It's how to attach the model to the stand that's the problem. The kits I received did not include a way to mount them on a stand, which means I have to come up with my own way. The Bitz sites are looking like the best option. steellegionnaire85
http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com has a flight stand that uses a clear 1/2 inch acrylic rod. Gives you the mount for the underside of the model. It's got either a 2 or 5 inch rod you can also get a longer rod if you want it taller. Ulrik_Ironfist
Elmo, it strikes me that you are from England for some reason. I wouldn't dream of asking you to ship such a small bit across the pond. HLVW
With my vultures I used a dremil and drilled out a hole then stuck in a hollow brass rod for some strength and used a another rod for the flyer stand. Also I think there is a video from buypainted on YouTube where he does something like this as well. Ulrik_Ironfist
Well, Elmo of the Commissariat has come through. I think I know how I'm going to do this. After I get the little thingy, I'll probably sculpt a second from green stuff using the thingus as a template. I might still get the valkyrie stand parts as an added measure for insurance though. If nothing else they'll find use if I ever get more of these things...
