Wayniac
Hi all, Does anyone have suggestions for colors that look like dried/drying blood (the actual coloration, not a blood effect)? For my Daemonkin I want to have their armor plates this color, basically giving the impression that blood was painted over whatever the original color was. However, I'm not sure if I should just go for a very dark red (like a crimson or darker) or more of a brownish or "rust" color. I kind of want to err more on the side of red than brown, because BFTBG. I mainly use Vallejo and Citadel and can get Reaper fairly easily so colors from those ranges would be best (any others I'd have to hunt around for) but I'm really not sure what the base/shade/highlight colors should be to achieve that look, without it being too red or too brown. PeteySödes
Vallejo Terracota applied correctly would likely work well. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325893-painting-a-dried-blood-color-not-the-effect/#findComment-4503288 Share on other sites
Ovidius Incertus
Also Vallejo Model Air Mahogany or Hull Red, Citadel Doombull Brown, Army Painter Chaotic Red, FW Gal Vorbak, etc. Like terracotta, look for something in the brownish side of the red spectrum. Major_Gilbear
This is going to sound a bit weird, but have you done an image search for dried blood? Small amounts, especially on lighter-coloured surfaces are more of a Terracotta colour as FearPeteySodes says. Larger or more thickly-encrusted amounts are actually much darker - more like a black-red, which can be achieved by adding a little black to some red, with a touch of blue or purple to "pull" the colour over into a slightly more crimson shade. Wayniac
I think what I really want is not to make it out like they painted their armor with dried blood, just the general coloration. Similar to how in one of the KDK warband's descriptions it's something like "the color of wet, flayed muscle" or "the color of bloodied brass". I think that's what I'm really trying to get and just did not convey it clearly (sorry!) since as I think about it and do some research, painting the armor with blood wouldn't give a good color. Instead, what I want is armor that is "dark crimson, the color of drying blood", if one were to have a description of my warband's colors. Major_Gilbear
Well, adding a bit of black and purple to a solid red will give you a dark crimson (since crimson is a red that tends slightly towards the blue part of the spectrum). :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325893-painting-a-dried-blood-color-not-the-effect/#findComment-4503486 Share on other sites
Noctem Cultor
I want to get a dried blood effect myself not sure if the results will help as your after the colour only, but I'm going to try mixing Martian Ironearth with Blood For The Blood God to see how that turns out. Hopefully this will get a crusty dry blood effect. MordentHex
Vallejo Smoke mixed in with a touch of red(your choice) works perfectly. PeteySödes
Vallejo Smoke mixed in with a touch of red(your choice) works perfectly. Ooh that sounds interesting! Isn't that going to dry glossy though looking wet rather than dried? Major_Gilbear
Add a dab of matte medium as well then. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325893-painting-a-dried-blood-color-not-the-effect/#findComment-4512933 Share on other sites

Isengrin
I have only used it in combination with Bftbg so far, but I imagine Vallejo's Dried Blood mixed with a few of the above mentioned colours could deliver the effect you're after. It dries matte and even if it were a bit glossy, putting varnish on top would take care of that. MordentHex
bftbg works well with it to darken it very well. when its matted, it will look like dried blood.
