So this is out now in hardcover and ebook. Has anyone read this series and what did you think of it?

Sounds quite interesting what with Khârn vs Abaddon and the involvement of living saints.

I should hopeful start reading the Red Path tomorrow.  I'm really looking forward to this as Khârn one of my favourite character for Chaos since I started the hobby 20 year ago.

That's sadly once again a symptom of the serialized format. Every installment needs big action or GW/BL management won't be happy. In a novel or novella you can space the action out better, and not have a clash every 30 to 50 pages that lasts for 10-20 pages.

I've read it all. I would've liked more character development and less bolter porn.

But if you like reading pages about how Khârn kills everybody, I suppose you'll like it. I didn't.

Agreed.

To add my points: I can't stand World Eaters (or Khorne Berserkers, even worse) that go "we are mad random butchers when it's cool to be one, but when the fluff needs it, we're always perfectly reasonable".

Abaddon's part could have been avoided - they are making a trilogy to show him as the ultimate, ultra cool antagonist, and here we see him again as a cartoonish villain shaking his fists and doing silly dramatic poses.

I actually liked the parts with the Saint and the Angels Revenant more than those with the World Eaters/Khorne berserkers and Chaos in general, which felt like a step backwards after Chosen of Khorne, Eater of  Worlds and Talon of Horus.

I'm always sorry when I have to admit I really didn't like somebody's work, so let's blame the different format.

I think DarkChaplain has a fair point.

I'll still buy the paperback when it comes out, because I'm a World Eaters and Khârn fanboy.

The problem is also that's it a prelude for a Traitor's Hate campaign and that's another reason it's suffer.

Traitor's hate campaign fluff by the way is an abomination - chop, burn dakka-dakka dark rituals for the sake of dark rituals. Counterattack that changed the game depicted in 3 sentences after a chronological date etc....furious.gif

That's probably because the fluff has been split in two books, with the counterattacks being told in Angel's Blade.

I quite like the prose of Traitor's Hate, by the way, even if it is too short for my likings.

Today I noticed a thing.

The Red Path subscription was 16.49 euros, limited time offer, pay six get eight.

The series is over, and the week after that the eBook gets released at 13.49.

Nice job, you just persuaded me to not buy one of those "convenient" subscriptions anymore, EVER biggrin.png

That's why I've been telling people in various places to hold off and wait if they aren't dying to dig in asap, like with the Legacy of Russ novelization. The sub-prices, even with the "8 for 6" marketing, are higher than the novel itself will go for.

A plus, though, is that at least you seem to be getting the novel, once it releases, as part of the subscription as well. So its not like you have to buy the full thing again. Though from what I gather, they're notoriously late on updating the subscriptions sometimes...

-----------

Anyway, I just read the first part, Furnaces of Haeleon, last night. Not hugely impressed. Abaddon felt like a bully rather than an impressive leader of superhumans, and while I liked Khârn, the prose could've been better. Seemed kind of repetitive in places. There were some cool action scenes, like Khârn using a burning White Scars bike to jump off and over battling Scars and Berzerkers, to get into close combat with a Stormseer, but overall I felt the battle fatigue coming up again.

Most of the story/chapter was action, which is to be expected with Khorne Berzerkers I'd say, with some inklings of interesting characters, but I can only hope that the next few installments have more meat and less all-out combat.

You would be even less impresed further on, lol
