The history of the "Old Ones" and their wars with the Necrontyr. It's in the old Necron codices.

The Old Ones had complete mastery of the warp but back then it was a tranquil and peaceful place. Their cold, reptilian minds did not create entities in the warp unlike the Psychic echoes of humanity and the various races in 40k.

There's also stuff in there about how the younger races the Old Ones created used the warp as a weapon, which created ripples of malice and negative vibes in the warp. And the more they used it, the worse it became, until it became the almost entirely malicious place we know and love.

The Necrontyr have no Warp sensitivity. The Enslavers, natural fauna of the Warp, attacked the Old Ones in their fortresses. Without them, the Warp-sensitive servant species they created - the Eldar, Orks, Hrud, Jokaero, etc. - spiraled out of control. Eventually this lead to the birth of the Chaos pantheon.

Which book was this in?

A lot of background of the War in Heaven (the conflict between the Old Ones, the Necrontyr, and the C'tan) can be found in the 5th Edition Codex: Necrons.  It's also hinted at in various editions of the Eldar and Ork codices, as well as the short story Deus Ex Mechanicus.

Surprised no mention of the Blood Games .

I would have, but that story is too good to post spoilers. Custodes don't afraid of anything. Not even primarchs. Garro isn't cowed by the fury of primarch, but the mere sight of custodian is enough for him to resign himself to death.

If you are building bodyguards from the genes up, making them completely fearless and willing to fight anything even if there is 100% chance of dying but they will slow down/ weaken the target would both be high priorities I would think.
