Space ship bases?

Uprising

Recommended Posts

Green Stuff, Olive Oil,  Metal Ruler and an old mechnical pencil.

Olive oil to keep the GS from getting to sticky.  Roll a ball of it onto the base.  Use the ruler side to make grid marks.  Use the tip of the mech pencil to make rivets.

I also used the end of a CD case for different texture.  Old window screen works as diamond plate.

I can't recommend enough DragonForge and their Tech Deck bases. They have a huge amount of variety, most of the different sizes are already available, and they are a delight to use. The only issue is that they're so popular that it can take a while to get your order made and shipped.

Take a look:

I have some resin bases, which I swear were Secret Weapon brand, but I'm not finding on their site ATM, which have nice grating as well as crates and tarps and wires built into them.

That said, if you head to your local Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. and head to the cross stitch section, you'll find "granny grid", basically plastic grid to cross stitch on.  Comes in a variety of grid sizes.  Cut some of that out, combine it with some plasticard for variety and some strips of plasticard and you've got endless shipboard bases.  You can ramp it up a notch by adding rivets or bolts (using round or hex styrene tubes), if you want to put the extra work in.  All said and done, this method is cheaper than molded bases.

I made this as a ruined factory base, but same principle for spaceships, just without rubble.  The hazard striped stuff is plasticard of the same thickness as the "granny grid", just so there's no step up/down in the floor level.

I wouldn't buy them unless you're just really in a pinch to get them completed. I've used card, granny grating, wire, and even green stuff as described above to do a variety of bases for my Templars. Easiest though is to just sand the tips of the base smooth (unless they're already smooth) and paint on what you're looking for. It's quick and easy for troops especially, but I've started doing it for just about everything in the 20-40mm size range.

The stormtalon's base is all card, some wire for the details and a little bit of greenstuff to cover up some fudges.

The Initiate on the right has some granny grating (in a large size) on part of his base while the one on the left is entirely painted.

These Neophytes have entirely painted on bases.

Here's a good simple tutorial from Tyler Mengel (nurgling6688 on these forums) which seems pretty effective. You could apply the same principles and make a wide variety of nice ship-based bases.

Might also be worth shooting Kizzdougs a PM. He's done some nice ship bases on his Emperor's Children.

What type of Textured Plasticard is that?

I don't know what the precise name of the product is, but I believe Evergreen Scale Models sells it, and I've definitely seen it at a local store over here. If you have access to a local hobby store, the kind more geared towards model trains and that sort of thing, you should be able to find it there.
