Deathbyppt's Imperial Fist log

I'm coming back to 40k after several years' break. When I quit I sold my entire Imperial Fist army, and now I'm on a quest to rebuild it better than before. I used to be in the Navy, but now I work as a painter full-time. It's been amazing, seeing the joy I get to provide people is the best feeling in the world. So in-between finishing up other people's projects I'm going to be painting Imperial Fists and sharing them here.

I've always been absolutely terrible at miniature wargames, mostly because I like to play fluff armies, and I'm just not competitive at all. I'm not 100% decided on a list, so I'm just going to start painting and work with what I have.

I began with a Contemptor Dreadnought and some Tacticool Marines

The Contemptor and the Tac Squad took about a day each to paint, mostly done with airbrush and oil wash. Overall I'm super pleased with how they've turned out and it has me excited to do more. If you have questions, please ask away and I'll be happy to answer what I can. Thanks for looking!

Just got the Devastators in the mail a minute ago, they had the FW chest and shoulder guards. I'm most likely going to strip the shoulders off to spread around to sergeants and whatnot throughout the army. I had a spare Sternguard arm laying around (the one where it's resting on a sword) so I'll use that for the Dev Sarge. They look really cool, gotta finish some zombies and then back to Fist city.

Just tried to get them off the bases as well and they won't budge...suggestions?

Looking great!! Can you share your recipe?

Razor knife for removing them from the bases

razor didn't work, they were kinda gooped with glue. just said fk it and they're going to be standing on the ground.

Yellow is Vallejo Golden Yellow shaded with thinned Burnt Umber

You could always take your clippers to them. The bases wouldn't survive, but just clip off the majority and then shave off the rest of the base carefully.

I was going to go there, but don't have a spare base (As I only bought the BaC set + vehicles)

very sadness, they look good how i've done them though. Is it customary to do before/after pics on here? I try to avoid taking pictures on unpainted plastic, but if the group is interested i'm down for whatever

Devastators will be ready in a few hours, so excited to show you guys how they've turned out. Suggestions for what I should paint next? I'm leaning towards the Terminator Captain or the Terminator Squad. I'm waiting on some weathering stuff in the mail before I start on vehicles. I'll be using AK Interactive chipping and rust streaking, as well as doing some true battle damage with my drill and knife. Little intimidated by how large the vehicles are

Gah, you replied before I got to finish editing my post! What's up with the other five Tactical Marines?

Sry, I don't normally do forums, so it's exciting, haha.

In the list I've made I have a 5-man Tac squad to fill out a Demi-Company, that's those dudes. I have two full tac squads remaining that i'll likely do in groups of 5 (I always end up rushing if I do 10 at a time, unless it's a commission)

Ah, so you're playing with the 40k rules. I assumed you were going with the Horus Heresy ruleset because you're using MK IV armour and Contemptors! Not a major worry, mind you. smile.png

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you post next!

And is it me or is that Contemptor's name "Von Butts"?

Yea, I couldn't decide what to name him so I used my Dark Souls character name Baron Von Butts. I think the paint makes them look like pretty serious business but I like to remind myself that i'm almost 30 and playing with toys.

As for the rules, I'd like to be able to do both. In all honesty though, I'm mostly painting this so that I can take it to a store and attract customers. I'm such :cuss at mini wargames.

Excellent yellow!  One of my favorite Fists yellow schemes I've seen, and the grit really works well.

Only qualm is the black.  Your yellow has so much depth, but the black doesn't, aside from the battle damage.  The black just feels underdone next to a superlative yellow.

so If I'm out to highlight black I don't have a lot of options besides grey and I'm purposely staying as far as I can from doing ANY line-highlighting, as I think it makes models look like toys instead of actual dudes.  The other option is to hand blend my blacks, which extends the time needed to complete each model significantly. These are being done in the spare moments while i'm not working on a commission, so speed is important to me as well as quality. I just can't honestly see someone in person looking at my models and saying "yea that's nice but you should've done something with the black" I'd just slap them
