Colour Scheme for the Warborn

Recommended Posts

Hail brothers and sisters.

So with the pending release of a new plastic HH box by GW I'm starting to plan for my Warborn detachment but I have a small minor problem, I'm not sure what colour scheme to use. Now I've narrowed it down to four which are the following:

1.

2.

Right, to talk through these.

The first I had the Legion Destroyer art from the HH book in mind, sort of a dark primary tone (according to the new colours that Bryan Blaire made its the colour of Dryad Bark with Macragge Blue on the shoulder pads).

The second and third I had the early crusade VII Legion in mind, two variations 'cos I thought that maybe the second was a bit too light and went with a darker grey. Second uses Administratum Grey and the third would be using a darkened Mechanicus Grey.

The fourth I made up for a darker Ultramarine scheme vibe, using Kantor Blue and a bronze instead of gold like I did in the others figuring the model would look better than the picture. Currently having a rummage round trying to find some old models that I can use as testers and see how they turn out in reality.

Thanks,

Ventris.

I prefer 2 and 3. The problem with 1 is that black is very common (and many players may initially think that you're fielding a Deathwatch army). The problem with 4 is that all blue will make people think of the Ultramarines (which isn't a problem in and of itself, but it will take away from the personal nature of the army).

I find that multi-color schemes like 2 and 3, subdued, but with some contrast, lend armies a bit of distinctiveness on the tabletop.

Both schemes also remind me of a very evocative cover on an old BL book.

That scheme isn't exactly the same, but it's close enough.

I very much like no. 3, though I'd recommend going for a very light colour as trim (white could be a possibility, or some sort of white gold?)

I'd also have that trim repeated in different places (belt buckle, tactical markings, perhaps knee markings for company or Expeditionnary Fleet, helm markings for rank und so weiter...)

I'd also consider some kinds of variations on the backpack (for instance, metallics for the vents, though you're free to choose of course :) )

Wow, quick and helpful replies.

@Tyler: Vaild point about the first and fourth schemes, hadn't thought of them so that rules them out.

@Thørn: Good points as well. I probably will end up putting some of the bronze/whatever colour I use on some of the backpacks and that. In regards to having a lighter contrast colour I did not think of that, I was going with a dark scheme to reflect themselves but I'll find some models and do some mock ups and see how they look. May do a variation of number 3. Three being mechanicus grey and three point one being leadbelcher.

I'd go with something similar to what you've done in #2 and #3, but with less blue, in all honestly. Make the armor the storm grey, and do small areas of blue, not even necessarily an entire shoulder pad, but just a stripe, for example. Apologist's Unification-era XI Legionnaire is a good example of what I mean, except with the white replaced by grey and the blue darkened down a bit to a suitable shade for the XIII Legion.

Also, Hyena just posted up his interpretation of one of the Warborn, albeit one, in true Hyena fashion, with an... interesting background that  involves him being a former Destroyer of the Nemesis Chapter, now a Demi-Warsmith of the IV Legion. You might want to check that out too.

Just some ideas there, but hopefully they inspire you. Whatever you go with, I'm sure they'll awesome. :)

Yeah, I could do really. And I totaly saw Heathen's new post which kinda kickstarted me into actually sorting out my Warborn and the 2 boxes of B@C I've got and the 2 boxes of the next one that I will no doubt get.

Also, totaly forgot to mention this but where the Ultima would go for the Ultramarines there would be a red 'W' instead and the XIII on the other shoulderpad or on the armour somewhere. Basically saying 'We're of the XIII but we are not Ultramarines'. Going on the idea of a company lead by an old terran captain who were stuck to the old ways and didn't show much signs of changing thus were given an expeditionary fleet and sent away from the main legion (similar to what Corax did to his terrans). Then eventually they refered to themselves as Warborn and not Ultramarines, to quote myself when talking to a mate about this "Not only born from war, but born for it." Loyal to the Emperor, Terra and the Imperium but not so much Guilliman. If that all makes sense.
