Aresol or brush on varnish for oil paints

Recommended Posts

I am moving oj to painting up some tanks and knights in the coming weeks and was wanting to use some oil washes on them and techniques from FW masterclass books.

As i do not own an airbrush does anyone have suggestions for what type of varnish I could use pre and post oil wash and one that could give a nice finish once completed.

Would prefer something with no odour. Does anyone have any recommendations?

The idea is to use a water based varnish to seal the oil paints in. Obviously aerosol varnishes are not water based. I'd be concerned with a brush on varnish disturbing the oil wash, destroying your good work.

So basically without an airbrush there are no options?

You can get brush-on water-based PU varnishes instead. As long as the oil paints/whatever are fully dry and don't rub off too easily, there is no reason you cannot use these to seal the model with. Just apply a thin layer carefully, and try not to "work" it too hard so that you don't disturb any layers underneath.

You cannot use these brush-on varnishes over powdered pigments easily however, but other fixatives like strong hairspray an old modellers' favourite that you could consider for helping to seal these powders instead.
