Sources of magnetic metal sheets/bars/etc

Remember that not all metals would work. You could try: http://www.rings-things.com/Products/Base-Metal-Sheet/ Nickel Silver only, as it should be about 20% nickel (a metal that will work). Honestly though, if you could get some thin steel sheet that would be ideal, as it would probably be cheaper.

Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt are going to be your best friends here as they are probably the most common ferromagnetic materials. Look for stuff with that in it.

Consider checking your local area for metal suppliers. It can be a bit intimidating, but they will have a massive selection and the knowledge to answer any questions you may have. Also, for what is usually a reasonable fee, they can cut things down into the exact size you want (if you know exactly what you want).

But the best part is that they will likely have a 'cut-off bin' with scraps that are usually large enough for hobby scale projects, and that 'scrap' is usually discounted or even free if you ask the right way. Buy some fresh product, and while they're cutting it just casually ask if they have any scrap they might part with.

Magnetized sheets for a pretty fair price:

Foil which can be magnetized:

SCIENCE! I have tried this on metal foil, but not the one in particular that I linked above. Aluminum foil will not hold a charge for very long (or at all), however any metal with iron will certainly magnetize and hold it for a time.
