Anyone use a Stormsword as a LoW for their Marines?

With the price bump of the Typhon, one must consider a fully upgraded Stormsword which hits 550 points (This will include 2 Las Cannons and 3 Heavy Bolters on top of the main weapon, and a Marine crew)

The Stormsword Siege Cannon is even more impressive as a weapon than what the Typhon carries, and is on an 9HP platform. This is probably a more competitive option than the Fell variants also...

I was in GW today, looking at a Baneblade kit and the mind did wonder...

*Edit* Was wrong on some point costs and have amended.

Problem is is that its nearly double the cost and still only has rear armour 12 or something equally pathetic. 9HP isnt much to chew through when a Podding Leviathan Drops in behind it with a Melta Lance and Drill.

I'd rather pay an extra 25 and get a Glaive which has the same Baneblade Chassis but 2 Quad Lascannons and the Volkite Carronade. Not as "NOPE" as the Siege Cannon but a bit more versatile.

If you're playing Solar Aux, then its a pretty good choice.

Well, you can run the Stormsword for under 500 points pretty effectively, though the rear armour is indeed vulnerable.

Would you ever expose it? I think clever deployment and positioning might help.

Is the gun Turret Mounted? If it isn't, well, thats how you end up exposing it.

Just a quick question. I was having a look at Escalation, and it says for 50 points you can add a pair or Lascannon and Heavy Bolter Sponsons, and you can do this twice (totalling 100pts)

So am I correct in thinking this means 4 Additional Lascannons and 4 additional Heavy Bolters in total?

The kit didn't come with enough Sponsons to do this however...

My buddy has used one extensively with his Iron Hands for a few years before first some Orks, then some Genestealers looted it and it consistently hits like a freight train, our experience largely predates most of the current HH Heavies though.

I just think it would be a pretty sweet kit to work on.

No resin to deal with, smooth plastic to paint and cheap comparatively - costing £10 less than a standard Imperial Knight.

The rear is definitely an issue against some lists, but with the abundance of Haywire these days, and the fact it seems to be becoming the most popular way to deal with armour in the Heresy environment, it doesn't matter if the rear armour is 12 or 15.

I multi bashed the kit to make all the variants, and the Stormsword is by far my favourite.

S10, AP1, no cover with 10" blast is messy. It's a gorgeous kit, with loads of potential.

as for the sponsons, you get a limited arc twin heavy bolter, and a turret lascannon. Yes, the upgrade can be done twice for double the number of weapon mounts, but the kit only includes one set.

you used to be able to get the sponsons sprue from GW mail order

Thanks guys, it's starting to sound like a no brainer.

Would definitely be a good addition to the Ultras in narrative or apoc games as well :-)

Part of me even likes the fact that the tank has a weak side, adds character :-P

It's official. The writ from the Primarch has been received and the construction has begun.

My birthday is coming up end of this month and I'll be getting the kit as one of my presents.

I had a browse online and was surprised to find no painted examples of this Tank in 30k Legion colours, guess this might be the first :-D

Are you talking painted examples of anything based on the baneblade chassis or just the stormsword?

Since you posted I've seen a few of the variants but nothing really caught my eye. They definitely aren't a common thing for use in Marine armies.

Ah fair enough, I did have a stormblade in NL colours (still viewable on the painting log), really gutted I was forced to sell for monetary reasons but I was gonna make full use of the beast. It's weapon was brutal

Awww.... you had to sell it? That's a tragedy on the same scale as the fall of the Fall of Seraph: I remember when you first put that thing together for last year's Tale of 18 Hobbyists. It was a beaut.

Yeah, just needed to be done unfortunately. But still, that just means there's room on the shelf for more interesting projects!

Lol, resurrecting this ancient topic...

Well guys, I now own the kit and will get started on it in January.

I have, using a Baneblade and various other vehicles, proxies this Tank in several games and can safely say it's wonderful in the 30k environment.

I kept a 20 man squad of Marines with Apothecary equipped with Augury Scanner behind it for a turn or two (not knowing if my opponent had Pods), and nothing ever got behind the tank to attack the weak side.

I imagine it would work very well in 40k too unless ranged D was abundant in the opposition force.

I'd love to use this against 40k Deathguard :-P

If you construct it carefully, you can switch out the weapons on the front to make different varieties - such as a shadowsword as well!

Or with a both of jiggery pokery, you can replace the whole front section of the 'turret' to make a falchion
