Fighting the latest heresy (genestealer cults)

There's a lot of talk around the Imperium these days about gods that are not the True Emperor of Mankind, and of mine workers falling away from the faith. They also, apparently, become mutants.

Have any of you encountered these heretics yet and put them to the flame helped them see the light?

I haven't yet, but I can say that the flash of burning promethium is the only part of the Emperors light these filthy Xeno mutants and heretic scum deserve. :P

(HOLY EMPERER ITS THE TRIUMVIRATE! Mutants, Xeno, and heretics! Fire up the immolators! It's time to purge His galaxy of these abominations and their "four armed gods" *righteous agitation intensifies*)

Well with their ability to infiltrate up close and possibility to assault on turn of arrival... flamers and heavy flamers seam to be a good idea.

The ignores cover will be handy against their occasional shrouded rule if you size initiative, and AP5 and AP4 should go a long way since I don't think they have anything above a 4+.

I see sisters and salamanders doing well against them due to the traditionally large number of flamers.... and BA with their tactical heavy flamers.

Black templars may also do favorably, given their chaptertactics helping them against being shot and charged by the sneakers. 1A +1 for addition ccw, +1 for counterattack. Should chew up some heretics.

This is kinda off topic, but Emperor's Oatmeal did you inspire me. I just had to write. Here's a (very) rough draft of what I've done (like, I literally just finished typing it and I haven't even read back over it). I know there's a good number of adjectives and so on that I've overused, but I just wanted to get everything on the page. Let me know what you think!

An imposing figure stood upon the balcony, his somewhat copious figure looming over the still growing crowd far below. His golden and white robes flapped in the afternoon breeze, and his golden staff glittered in all its gem-encrusted glory under the light of the sun. Around his stern and sagging face hovered a half-score of cherubim, their laud hailers awaiting his voice. He looked down upon the flowing crowd assembled below the balcony of the Ecclesiarchal Palace, the seat of power of his Diocese, as the smoke began to rise from the fringes of the hive.

“Brothers and Sisters,” he bellowed, his voice amplified a thousand fold to echo over the tumbling spires and dilapidated underhives of the city, “I come before you not as a Cardinal of the Ecclesiarchy, but as a fellow child of our Immaculate God-Emperor! This very day, this very hour, the enemies of our Lord on Terra, the enemies of humanity are upon our doorstep, nay within our walls, our cities, our very homes! They come not from the void, or the irradiated wastes of the northland, but from our cities, from the highest spire to the deepest underhive, our mines, our villages and town!”

His eyes blaze with holy fervor as he continues, “Laying bare their heresy for all to see they rise from the depths and descend from the heights, calling upon the populace to rebel against their Emperor,” his jowls gyrate as spittle begins to pool at the corners of his mouth, “But the faithful see through their lies, their heresy evident in their every word! Xeno abomination they consort with, blaspheming against the word of the Emperor of all men! Mutation they spread with glee, tainting the purity of the glorious human form, the physical reflection of Him on Terra which we all possess! Against His church do they strike, kneeling before false deities!”

His staff sparks against the surface of the balcony as he reaches fever pitch, his arms whipping up and down as his words ricochet like bullets over the crowd and down the streets and alleyways of the hive and fire burns in his eyes, “Witches! Yes, psychic abominations they do shelter and hide from the Emperor’s saving light! These thrice-dammed infidels dare encroach upon the domains of the Emperor, our homes!? We cannot stand idle in the face of this affront to our God-Emperor! We shall rise is response to their heresy! We shall fall upon them as the avenging light from above! We need not fear for the Emperor is with us: He is our strength and our shield, and we shall not falter! With our bare hands we shall strike down the roiling mass of mutants, the insidious deceivers, the false prophets, which seeks to tear us from our Emperor-give place!

Now he raises his staff overhead, pallid flesh holding the Ecclesiarchal icon high, “Gather your weapons: guns, swords, clubs, bats, take all that you can find! We shall rally before the oncoming tide, and with the Emperor as our witness, we shall beat it back! We shall pursue the foe wherever they go; they shall lead us to their strongholds, their dark hiding places, their insidious schemes shall be laid bare before the Emperor! The gates of their keep shall shatter, and the followers of the True God on Terra shall pour in and BURN. IT. DOWN.”

His voice almost breaks as he sends forth his congregation, “Go forth; tarry not! Do the Emperor’s work and have no fear! Only in death does duty end, and only through death shall we live!”

Edit: Typos abound!

I havent as of yet, though one of my regular opponents has a bunch on order. He has a large tyranid army he wants to match them up to.

I havent even looked yet at the GSC list. Wall of Death is always a good thing against poorly armored short range or assault troops. Good thing my shipment of eight flamers just came in.

GSC seem to me as one of the better opponents for Sisters, fluff wise for sure. Almost makes you wish their was a chaos cultist codex too. Heresy!

Saw a 1000pt game against Space Wolves which ended in a slaughter for the Wolves.  The GSC player used the Formation where everyone gets to use Cult Ambush during deployment to which he rolled a 6 on his big unit of Purestrain Genestealers, and so Infilitrated 3" away in Deployment and charged first turn against a unit of Thunderwolves.  Something like 75 rending attacks on the charge - not even Thundercav survive that kind of brutality.  Purestrain 'Stealers even have a 5+ Invulnerable Save now too, which helped them shrug off whatever was left behind and the ability for their Characters to auto-pass Look Out Sir! rolls - even whilst in a challenge! - means its very hard to single out their leaders.

I think Sisters will probably do reasonably well against Genestealer Cults.  Template Weapons are the obvious answer to horde units, and Sisters have plenty of Flamers to go around.  Dominions are a good counter to any Leman Russ hulls they might be bringing.  And I'd think about dropping Exorcists in favour of Heavy Bolter and/or Heavy Flamer Retributors for horde control although Exorcists will still be very effective against the AV10-12 vehicles you'll see them bringing (Sentinels, Chimeras and their new Goliath Truck).  Also 4 of their 7 Psychic Powers are Maledictions/Witchfires, so having army-wide Adamantium Will is nice.  One thing to watch out for will be their Webber weapons, which have an AP equal to the target's Strength Value.  Not much of a threat against MEQ since it will be AP4, but Sisters are only S3 meaning it becomes AP3.

Bubble-wrap and burn, bubble-wrap and burn.

You can expect MSU rending charges first turn reliably, and when a unit (brood) uses their ability to return to the shadows, they "regenerate" 1d6 models lost so make sure you focus fire each brood completely down before changing targets.

If their magus (dirty psyker) rolls the ability to summon, make that your priority. 2WC for a five-man squad, 3WC for a 10 man and they come in with ANY free UGs they player wants. Purge that alien pronto.

Ooooo I'm such a traitor.

I think we're well suited to deal with these filthy Xenos, more so then most factions at least.  Their whole infiltration gimmick puts them right where you want them: super close range.  As for first turn assaults, I'm always looking to charge SOMETHING with my various close combat units, so bring it on I say, it just makes my job way easier! :p  Seriously though, just add priests or boxes to your units and it's no problem.

I agree that taking out any summoning Magus' should be your first priority because that's where the scary squads will come from.  The rest of the army is a lot like guard so the same tactics should apply for the most part.  We have all the tools we need to deal with them at least :)

Not sob, but I wonder how their massivery superinfiltration formation that wants to assault would do if the only thing on the board is 3 LRCs that ignore all damage results except explodes, containing tech marines and ccw crusader squads...

As for SoB. Wall of death is your friend no doubt. Like wise for sallies.

Summoning Magusodes need to die asap, you say? Well, I reckon that's a great chance to ally in an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor with a Psyocculum. And a Condemnor Boltgun, too, because why not?

Perfect actuallu. Also isn't the broodlord by another name also a psyker?

BL is ML1, yup.

First turn charges on a 6 for their gimmick (expect formations that give 2 or 3 d6, choose the one you most want).

Land raiders are a huge point sink. They will beat you on objectives hard. This is the main thing to worry about, and why you should FF/delete entire units and not leave a single one standing. They can jump all over the board like no ones business.

Wall of death is nice and all, but many have a 5++ with the chance at a 3+. This army has it all, but not as choatic as chaos.

What in GSC has a 3+?

I know they can get shrouded and that can help bring a cover save to a 3+ but I was talking about flamers as the main GSC killer.

So the Psyocculum can help knock out their 2 biggest threats.

Do they have much by way of AV14 killing power? I suppose they have a lot of assault antitank and those short range lascannons.

One of the brood types get a d6 chart bonus for the entire game, something along the lines of

1 - assault grenades

2- poison

3- 3+ save

4-a shiney hat (I forget sorry)

5-shiney pants

6-your choice

Ah ok. Wow. I forgot about that 3+, but that's not reliable.

As for AV 14, the alcolytes (5-20 a brood) can take one Heavy Rock Saw for every five models; x2 str (so 8), AP2 with armorbane. Good but the saw is more than 1/2 the points of a 5man. But, if you get that magus to summon then thats free points with a couple of these.

A lot of their stuff is not reliable, but plenty of the options are solid in just about all of the tables.

Edit: about 33% chance for them to get the armor, but honestly for GS, I'd be taking the assault grenades. That is the biggest tyranid, weakness, not having assault grenades. For the cult, this gives them a great chance to get them.

So with the LRC crusader army they super infiltrate their pseudo chainfists. If they don't get 1st turn you hurricane bolter and assault the heresy out of em. If they get first, you quite likely just had an LRC or 3 wrecked...
Yeah. If their super infiltration gets some bum rolls expect them to pull units off the board left and right and attempt to redeploy... which could be a gamble again for them. If they pull to many units you have o ly a few units left you need to blast off the board and if they time it wrong you could leave them at the end of game turn with nothing on the board!

You may have missed it further up the board here, but their Decurion style gives them 2-3 d6 to get the set-up they want, you choose which one you use.  Then for the first turn, and really for all turns, expect them to be as spread out and hard to get to as can be. Their movement shuffle lets them effectively teleport all over the board. Lucky shots could wipe them turn one, but I would not expect it.

Here is what we will be dealing with:

Cult ambush
Instead of arriving from reserves normally, unit can roll the ambush table D6
1/ your own table edge
2/ roll d6 1-2 left 3-4 right 5-6 you choose
3/ anywhere more 9" from enemy or 6" from enemy which have no los
4/ 6"
5/ 6" + bouns shooting or run
6/ 3" + charge on the turn arrive

Return the Shadows
Instead of moving in movement phase, unit have this rule and not within 6" of enemy models can be removed from battlefield and placed into ongoing reserve. Unit can't use this rule arrive from reserve or ongoing reserve and can't do so when in vehicle
Genestealer/aberrants/Metamorphs/neophyte/acolyte/ and all HQ

Chasing them around the board is going to be rediculous... I guess marines dropping in point blank and hammering them could work... skyhammering specifically perhaps.

Excuse all the marine talk black templar zeal is strong with this one.

For SoB, options are limited... strong initial defensive deployment, wo th plenty of good cover and wall of death inducing flamers, bubble wrapping anything you feel is mission critical... pray for 1st turn/ seize then BURN BABY BURN!

Idk, what my guard will do... eesh. Basically the same plan but take way more casualties due to poor saves.

Guard low rear armour well, superinfiltration is better than drop pod assault in a lot of ways from the sounds of things...
