Charlo
If you want to run the combi flamers set up, why not take heavy flamers instead of heavy bolters? Really maximize those rending flamer templates. Tried heavy flamers and they are good for a turn when podding but after that they had limited use other than overwach, hb give you a more versatile unit for the entire game in my opinion Heavy Bolters are a trap. It's usually one extra shot compared to a bolter, and with sniper you don't care about S/AP anyway! Jimm
I disagree, it gives you extra range and extra shots at range which come turn 3+ is really helpful. A matter of preference and play style I guess. Black Cohort
H bolters are also handy if you plan on charging, being assault 3 and all. I have had good success with a 10 man squad in a rhinos with 2 heavy flamers, the eldar player wasn't amused when they torched a jetbike squad. Terminus
It's not that much range since they will be often moving so you're reduced to 18". If HB were 10 points maybe... otherwise a plasma gun for guaranteed precision shot AP2 for 5 points less is the better deal. I think HBs can work well for Dark Angels and maybe Iron Warriors (?) for their special rounds. Missile launchers also have some interesting potential, particularly for Alpha Legion and Dark Angels. That frag template really gives you some range and the template will often give as many or more chances at a rending shot as the heavy bolter. Heavy flamers are cute, but as said above, not very useful in subsequent turns. I rather buy two combi-flamers than one heavy flamer. In general, I think plasma is the best option for Marksmen, and melta for Machine Killers/melee units. Charlo
If you are bringing vets for just 6 heavy bolter shots though probably not worth it imo. But I like pressure units :P Fists are also okay with the increased accuracy. Ishagu
I think the Heavy Bolter is a complete waste of points, you could bring dedicated anti Tank or Ap2 weaponry for cheaper. Even if you were about to charge, I'd prefer Meltas or Flamers to be the Assault weapons I fire over some Heavy Bolters. With a Plasma gun costing less, wounding more easily and ignoring all armour at all times, it's an easy decision. rendingon1+
Hbolter works great with DA vets. Sniper + Acid shells = 66% to ignore AP3, 50% to ignore AP2, wounding on 2+. But that's just DA, in other lists hb is suboptimal. No doubt Legion specific rules and wargear can greatly alter the performance of things :-) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326471-veteran-squads-without-ranged-weapon-upgrades/page/2/#findComment-4524846 Share on other sites
Gorgoff
We Iron Warriors like HB too. Pinning makes it way better. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/326471-veteran-squads-without-ranged-weapon-upgrades/page/2/#findComment-4524884 Share on other sites
