FW Legion Heavy Weapons

Recommended Posts

Anybody have any experience sticking FW's Legion heavy weapons (I'm especially thinking of the retro-styled MLs and MMs) on newer-generation Marine plastics?  On the surface it looks like it will be straightforward, but before I spend my hobby budget for the month on the bitz, I want to make sure I'm not signing up for a major headache.

I'm mostly concerned because the weapons themselves don't come with the hand attached, and I want to be sure that the "hand is attached to the bolter" generation models will work.  A little knife work and some filler putty is cool; I don't want to have to resculpt anything if I can help it...

So here is the problem with the legion heavy weapon sets. You get a nice pack of 5 matching weapons, BUT, they don't come with hands. The only compatible hands are from the legion heavy support marines themselves, that come in packs of 5 with no weapons. You can also find the arms here: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-WW/Space-Marine-Heavy-Weapons-Set in the old 40K pre-Heresy weapon set.

What I ended up doing was buying 4 FW LCs that came with the arms and backpack on eBay. Also keep in mind that the older legion weapon kits and the 40K kit do not fit any of the plastic backpacks or Mk III backpacks UNLESS you make the weapon pointed straight down at the ground. If you make them aiming, the butt of the weapon will clip with the backpack. This is why the 40K kit above gives special Mk III backpacks with the vents pointing backwards, to make room for the weapon. This isn't a problem with the newer weapons and the current heavy support marine models. I'm guessing they wiggled things around just enough to fit the weapons. I noticed the 40K LCs and the current 30K LCs have slight differences, such as making room for the left hand to support the weapon.

For the FW ML, I ended up having to cut the vent off the marine's backpack. This is what Betrayal at Calth does too. They give you the same style of ML in plastic and a special backpack that's missing one vent. If you want to use the MMs without special backpacks or cutting, you will have to kind of angle the weapon towards the marine's left, instead of having him firing straight ahead.

Well, damnit.

I really wanted to do up a LF pack with the old-style PCs and MLs.  Also wanted to use the retro HB and multi-Melta on chariot-style attack bikes.

Doing some "hack up" conversion work with the backpacks wouldn't faze me; It might even be part of the fun, TBH.  But if the arms are a problem, then it's a no-go.

Thanks for the information, brothers!

If you're talking about the older style heavy weapon (these https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Space-Marine-Heavy-Weapons-Set) the 4 pack with 1 each of heavy bolter, lascannon, plasma cannon and multi-melta, they come with left and right arms, and alternate backpacks as in the picture.

If it's the more recent sets where you have 5 of each of the underslung style they fit the no hands arms.

the over shoulder types here

and

don't come with arms as they are for the older heavy squads. You should be abel to find some arms online on eBay or Facebook trade groups.

Failign that, if you have any 1st/2nd ed plastic arms, there's one that fits brilliantly - I have loads, so you can message me too
