Black Library Live- Nov 19th

I personally would have been sitting through all panels and probably skipped all signings unless they didn't overlap with anything else. Getting signatures is great, but getting the info and creative notes from the authors seems far more interesting than standing in line for a handshake and some scribbles. That queue for AD-B looked nuts on Twitter!

Hey, different strokes for different blokes! I've said it before in this thread, the deciding factor for me to head up for this event was that A-D-B was going to be there, and he was releasing a new book. We don't get A-D-B across for events as much as I'd like, and even getting a little 1-on-1 time with him as he's signing a backlog of books is hugely rewarding.

It did feel really bad for the guys that were sat next to him though, because his queue was insane during both signings. I was chatting to one of the organisers over the lunch period and he reckoned there was about 320 - 340 tickets sold for the event, so it was quite a packed day in terms of attendees. For both signings A-D-B probably had roughly 80 to 100 people in his queue. Mark Clapham (who released Tyrant of the Hollow Worlds at the event, which is a beast of a book) barely had anyone queuing during his 10am signing, so managed to have a good chin-wag with him without getting the way of others.

Not sure what major groundbreaking revelations people are expecting out of the day. I attended the 40k seminar, and there weren't any real tidbits that I thought 'must remember that to tell the guys over on the B&C', half of it was a short discussion on how the authors (Gav Thorpe, Guy Hayley and Mark Clapham) got into writing for Black Library, how they approach their novels, and half way through turned into a Q&A session. The Q&A session with A-D-B at the end of the day was great fun, but again there wasn't anything groundbreaking, it was just hugely enjoyable to hear him speak candidly about all sorts of stuff. Some of the bits that stick out in my mind (and I assume / hope A-D-B will chime in if I get anything wrong) were:

  • Aaron originally wanted to have Amit face off against Khârn in Betrayer, but he wasn't allowed to use the character.
  • If he had free reign over writing any remaining part of the Heresy, he'd choose Sanguinius at the Eternity Gate.
  • People are going to be surprised at how few Heresy books are left.
  • He hates Sevatar.
  • He sees Talos and Sevatar as the different sides of the same coin. Sevatar sees that the Night Lords can be something different / better and tries to make a change in the Legion to accomplish this, whereas Talos is more reminiscent about the potential the Night Lords had and by the end of the novels accepts that he cannot change the underlying makeup of the Legion and is ready to die.
  • The Black Legion may become more of a series than a trilogy.
  • His original idea for the second Black Legion book (forming the Black Legion, the first Black Crusade, and finding his sword) may not happen, as he's about 'half way' through the book and he's not even close to that yet.
  • Some of his books were partially inspired to 'clear up misconceptions' around characters or events. Abbaddon is one of these.
  • People looking for definitive answers or validation of theories in his books (especially MoM) are going to be sorely disappointed, as he'd much rather leave things open for debate.
  • First Claw probably won't be appearing in the Heresy series, given the amount of time it takes him to write anything and the storyline threads that need to be tied up in the remaining books. He's got ideas about Decimus in a 40k / 13th Black Crusade timeline, but that also may not happen as it would have to be a series in its own right in order to get everything done.
  • He'd quite like to kill off Lorgar (which my computer auto-corrected to 'Larger'), but that probably won't happen either.
  • He didn't have his trademark beanie with him ohmy.png

On a personal nerd level, chatting to him whilst he was signing a deluge of my books we stumbled across the B&C which resulted in the following:

Aaron: You're a member of the B&C?

Me: Yeah

Aaron: You should have said, we're a brotherhood. What's you're user name?

Me: m r parker

Aaron: I know you!

Which got my the following my First Heretic:

Is there any indication the HH series will end with 50? Both Ruinstorm and Old Earth have an ending type feel to them (assuming Ruinstorm is the legions from IS leaving for Terra and getting held up until the final siege). Kyme says that Old Earth is Vulkan fulfilling his destiny.

Still feels to me as if they will go 60, and 55 at least.

Crimson King, Ruinstorm and Old Earth all still to come and the siege hasn't really started yet ( it seems), and at that time we're at book 47. But since ADB is another one indicating that the Siege is very close to getting started, let's say the actual siege starts with book 48 or 49. You'd certainly pencil in 5 books for the entirety of the siege. And then there's the fact that most people expect a novel of the Space Wolves attacking Horus and a fall of the Death Guard novel. So 55 at a minimum.

What I would like to know is how many novels individual authors will still contribute. I get the feeling from the Warhammer TV interview with ADB that he will do one more before the end, and he really wants it to be Sanguinius and the Blood Angels ( he's been oustpoken on that and I expect it to happen). I'm sure many people would love this. Then there is McNeill who I think will do one final novel as well, he has said in an interview that he wants to. It would be fitting for Abnett to write at least one but it would not surprise me if he is not included for the remainder of the series. Other than that, one more from Wraight seems certain, probably one more from French, one from Guy Haley.

It would be interesting to learn what happens to Horus when it says that even if he wins he wont be able to rule.

I think 5 books for the siege is overkill so I'm hoping that doesn't happen.

Is the wolves attacking Horus what everyone expects to result in Russ getting his arse kicked and most of his legion destroyed?

Are we guessing Vulkan being a perpetual means he will be heading to Terra to fight in the Webway? (Maybe he has a task to find the Eldar too or is that hoping for too much?)

Kill off Lorgar? Even if it probably won't happen, goodness gracious, as in killing him off in 30k?

EDIT: Actually, I'd totally be okay with that...if it meant we got another ADB Word Bearers novel!

It makes perfect sense, though. No one's seen him in the Eye for 10,000 years! "Yup, he's uhhhhhh, ascended! And he's just contemplating existence in the beyond, guys! You just gotta have faith and believe and keep fighting the good fight!"

We know for a fact that Lorgar at least goes Daemon Primarch by the Siege. Artwork of him in that states exists, even. And at that point I'm not sure killing him off is really an option anymore. It didn't work for any of the others, so why would it for Lorgar?

Also keep in mind that Lorgar going into seclusion is pretty common by that point. Who knows, maybe he'll pop up with a new novel by the end of the 13th Great Crusade?

Yes I agree that it would be fine really.

I don't think Lorgar has done anything in 40k since he went and started sulking in the EoT after the Heresy.

Wont happen though. Especially as Lorgar is the "golden warrior" that will be defending the corpse Emperor in the End Times msn-wink.gif

Part 1: prelude towards and the battle of Istvan 3

Part 2: Prelude to Prospero and Istvan 5 battle

Part 3: Prospero and Terra

Due to the incredible cast that would be required, each movie is focusing on a handful of legions.

In the cinema of your trust, there is only war!

The new trilogy done by . . .

So if I'm reading this right they have announced up to Book 47 with 3 more to write which brings us to Terra at 51 onward... the Siege could be drawn out over 10 books to close at 60 but that really would be fist pumping the living hell out of the cash cow! 5 or 6 would do for me... and let us all prey for ADB getting his wish to handle The Angel at Eternity Gate!

As for a Hollywood adaption of any kind for the HH... no. I can see it now, a non gore infested PG13 rated piece of low budget filth, aimed at high school teens, littered with no name actors and the shattering of all our collected hopes and dreams for this amazing universe of darkness and despair known as WH40k! A brand new IP to the movie market such as this would be butchered sad.png

I would prefer to see HH adapted as a 3D animated movie series, something like The Lord Inquisitor with a huge budget, amazing voice cast and rated R18. That would make me quite the happy loyalist smile.png

Well, there could be a lot of stories that end at "alright, we're jumping to Terra, now." We've also got 16 more Primarchs books to enjoy... Maybe AD-B can nab Sanguinius failing the Eternity Gate bit :D I hope he does at least one book in that series.

Or what about a long-running "historical" series a la Vikings? ;) That sure would be a dream come true.

As much as I want my Morty fall to Grandfather scene I want nothing more than to read Erebus get his come-uppins.

Yeah, insiders or interviews said we'd be surprised at how few HH books are left so glad to hear that confirmed at the event. Thx to all for relaying what happened (although it makes me super jealous) and look forward to reading more.
