New to 30k. Starting the IH legion, help needed

Heya

Been lurking in the HH forum a bit lately and decided to start my first legion, the Iron Hands. Being a 40k player I'm totally lost on what to bring to these all power armored battles. Nonetheless, I have already bought a bunch of models and was hoping to get some input on how to assemble them, make a list and what to complement the army with. So far I have:

3 Quad Mortars

3 Laser Rapier batteries

2 Laser vindicators

2 Sicaran

1 Typhon Siege tank

1 Leviathan

3 Contemptors, 2dual ccw 1 dual kheres

Iron father

5 Gorgons

5 Cataphractii

2 Dreadclaw

1 Atropos Knight

30 mk4 marines assembled as tacs and vets

20 mk3 marines yet to be assembled

Misc weaponry, 5 lascannons, 5 MM, 10 plasma guns (for a heavy or support squad maybe?)

2 praetors

10 recon marines

+whatever 40k stuff I have is legal to use(LR's, drop pods)

First thing I notice myself is I lack transports and next thing I want to buy is probably a couple of Proteus and/or a spartan. I will probably buy the prospero box as well for more mk3.

So any tips on how to assemble the 20 mk3's? what kind of list can I run with what I have, which RoW and so on

Definitely use Head of the Gorgon. Company of Bitter Iron isn't half bad, but I feel HotG is overall stronger.

I definitely suggest getting more transports for your troops. The outflanking HotG provides to tanks is outstanding. I may also be paranoid because my buddy always brings phosphex mortars against me and any MEQs I have not in transports die instantly.

You want to captilize on tanks. That's the Iron Hands way. So I'd take the typhon opposed to the knight. Typhons are good at digging out entrenched units.

I personally wouldn't bring the dreadclaw for much because while Iron Hands aren't awful at cc, they're not amazing at it either.

Since you want to capitalize on tanks, I wouldn't suggest a heavy support squad (Although we can have some nasty combos with volkite and Mor's PE). You want to fill up your heavy slots with as much tanks as possible. Your sicarans and laser vindicators will do well.

These are just my personal opinions but I don't really care for contemptor or rapier batteries. While strong I think they're overused. But feel free to fill your elites with them.

Leviathans are beasts. Even tougher with our wargear. This is the one unit I would suggest a drop pod for. I haven't been too lucky marching them up the field. But dropping one in enemy lines with a melta lance or grav bombard and snippy claw is excellent.

Throw your praetor in with either a cataphractii command squad in a LR or pick up a spartan and put him with gorgons. I also highly suggest using Autek Mor and Orth in a sicaran. We as iron hands have two very strong characters.

I've never been a huge fan of recon marines and have never even played against them so I can't really say how they are.

If you can/want, put your tac squads in LR Proteus'. Its expensive but the LRs can bring some nice anti tank and you'll have a wall of bawkses blocking LoS. Outflanking a plasma support squad in a Proteus is also delicious fun.

Finally I'd suggest picking up Ferrus. He's a great all around primarch. He's a fantastic force multiplier and can definitely hold his own in combat.

Wow thanks for your time writing such detailed response.

Next pick up will probably be a couple of rhinos and a couple of proteus along with ferrus.

And i will build a support squad with plasma and maybe order some volk it weaponry to kit out some of the leftover marines with.

I might also order some battle automata to use as elites.

Any tips on models for the 2 characters you mentioned? As a 40k IH player I'm not spoiled with named characters

Orth just rides in a tank, so he doesn't really need a very detailed model to represent him. If his tank blows up, Orth just has a power maul and a bolt pistol so that's not hard to model.

Artek Mor on the other hand deserves an appropriately awesome looking model to represent him. You could use this model from FW:https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Iron-Hands-Iron-Father Has pretty much all the right equipment, since a paragon blade doesn't have to be a sword.

Personally for my Autek Mor model, I used the cataphractii praetor model from this: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Legion-Praetors

Then I threw on some bits from a 40k master of the forge kit to bulk him up and give him a more mechanical look.

For Orth, I have a tank model and a ground model. For the tank one, I used one of the marines from Forgeworld's tank crew set: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Space-Marine-Tank-Crew

And I just added a ton of Iron hands bits and stuff to make him look higher ranking.

For the ground version I just grabbed some MkIII legs and tried to mimic how I designed his upper body for the tank model.

While it is a decent chunk of points, people kinda worry when an AV14 box just rolls into their deployment zone out of no where. Its a good way to get tacs to objectives in enemy territory and you'll have good staying power with the AV14, while also being able to chip away at vehicles with Lascannons. (Youll probably be hitting side armor too) If you're worried about reserves rolls, you can invest in a Damocles rhino and/or deploy a Proteus turn 1 with an augury web for rerollable 2+ reserves.

Ok so I did quick list with what I have + 2 proteus

This is 2850pts. But I don't think Autek Mor has a place in this list. Maybe should change something to fit a bodyguard for him in a transport. Otherwise it looks similar to what I usually run in 40k, lots of long range fire power with a few combat tricks sprinkled in. As usual I'm feeling the strain of the FoC and have to leave my Laser Vindis and terminators out of the list. Might be boring with 6 rapier batteries and I might switch one of the squads for a unit of mech bots later when I buy some
