furstyferret
Hi all, This is probably a really stupid noob question, but what is your preferred method of thinning down washes, specifically GW's shades? I want to use Druchii Violet, but more as a glaze than a wash, and so I want to dilute it a small amount for my needs and make a premixed bottle. Would this be best done with distilled water, Lahmian Medium, or something like airbrush thinner? Guest
Personally I would use medium it should keep the pigment in the shade together. PS... Named after the drink? :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327083-thinning-washes/#findComment-4539106 Share on other sites
furstyferret
Thanks for the reply Brother Arkley! Yes, I did wonder that about the medium. Everyone I know seems to use water, so I did wonder which to use. PS. Yes, it's a great beer. Chaplain Raeven
Wouldn't 'ardcoat be better for getting a glaze? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327083-thinning-washes/#findComment-4539144 Share on other sites
furstyferret
Isn't 'ardcoat a gloss varnish? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327083-thinning-washes/#findComment-4539219 Share on other sites
Grand Master Laertes
'ardcoat is really thick, you cannot use it as a thinner. Maybe you can add a little bit of it to a thinned shade to get a glossier result, but GW gave us glossy shades, so it would be pointless unless you are some kind of perfectionist. I use Lahmian Medium too. I higly prefer it to the water, as the final effect is more uniform, while using water I usually get a splotchy result. Major_Gilbear
A little matte ("Lahmian") medium, and a little clean water. You want it thin for glazing (not just thinned), but the extra little acrylic medium also helps to keep the stuff a bit more workable too. RikuEru
I too recommend Lahmian Medium. But make sure your Medium stays absolutely clean - so it doesn't carry any pigments into other mixes. ...I, personally, had problems when I had a watered down colour, that I thinned with Lahmian Medium. It caused white remnants in recesses. Still can't say if it was the Water, the Medium or both. (Or drying to fast or whatever.) Still, thinning down with Medium will wotk best, in my experience. Kastor Krieg
For all that is holy do not use Ardcoat to thin anything.Do not use Lahmian, as well, as it's semi-opaque and it will either grey out the color or leave those "salty" stains.Go, buy a fairly cheap at the volume (twice the price of a GW paint bottle, I believe, for 200ml) Vallejo AIRBRUSH FLOW IMPROVER (71.562). Not the Airbrush Thinner, no. The Flow Improver. You will be golden then. betrayer41
I know this is a bit off but have you tried oils? I have just made the switch and will never look back Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327083-thinning-washes/#findComment-4539349 Share on other sites
Guest
I use Liquitex Matt Medium. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327083-thinning-washes/#findComment-4539350 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
You know that the matting agent in matte medium is basically talc, right? So if you don't shake it well enough, after a while the talc settles out and/or clumps up - that's what's giving you the "salty", white, or semi-opaque finishes. I regularly use Liquitex and Vallejo's matte mediums, and they are just the same in this regard (albeit much cheaper than Lahmium medium).
