Enjoy:

I've not even read them before posting!

I'll sum it up...

Stats are sightly different to 40k:

WS5 BS5 S5 T5 W2 I4 A2 Ld9 - NO Eternal Warrior

Spears are Troops choice, Shield/ Sword are Elites.

You bring them as a loyalist allied detachment where you can bring either of the units as HQ instead of it's normal role (so use your shield bros as HQ and spears as a troop from prospero box).

These are an extract of the Talon of the Emperor army list coming in Inferno.

They come in units of 3 and can add up to 6 more.

Generic Custodes Special rules:

  • 2+/5++ and MTC on the armour
  • Immune to Fear, re-roll failed DtW rolls
  • 3" Coherency and always attempt to regroup at full Ld
  • +1I if enemy has the same or worse WS majority

Spear:

  • AP2 +1S / AP 3 S:User ---- on charge / subsequent rounds
  • 6 to hit generates an extra attack (though these can't generate)
  • Assault 2 S4 AP4

Sword:

  • S: User AP3, Rending
  • Assault 2 S4 AP5, Snapshots at BS2

Shield:

  • 4++ that is rerollable in combat.
  • Cannot use with a two handed weapon

Shield Guys additional rule:

  • If two models are in base to base they count as having defensive grenades (so just keep two together and get your BS2 overwatch on)

===========================

Thoughts:

Certainly toned down from 40k, lacking in Eternal Warrior, deep strike and all AP2 all the time plus fewer base attacks. A few choice improvements too, especially in overall balance in the 31st millenium.

No idea how you get these guys into combat though as you can't ride in friendly transports and they aren't fleet or anything (unless being a Super Heavy Transport negates this?).

===========================

Some fun reactions from me:

HOLY CRAP 4++ REROLLABLE SHIELDS IN ASSAULT?!?

Also lol... Guardian spear is assault 2 and AP4, as it shoudl bloody well be.

The shields count as defensive grenades when you have some in base contact.

Spears generate additional attacks on a hit of 6 in combat but these can't make even more etc.

First of all thanks for posting these! Brilliant find!

I have to say though I'm a little surprised by a couple of factors:

Biggest surprise is the only having two attacks really. For all the hype of how amazing custodes are in the fluff I was expecting at least 3.

And initiative too. This is more in combination with the low attacks, but I am surprised they didn't go with 5.

Having both three attacks and initiative five would have been a bit overpowered, but either-or? Probably not so much.

Either way, glad to have rules for them!

The rules will certainly do for now.

I like the fact sentinel blades have rending - it makes it a much more viable option, as does the 5++ to their armour.

The loss of fearless and eternal warrior make them a lot more vulnerable then their 40K versions.

I'm not sure they're an 'auto include' - which is no bad thing!

No Shield Captain, No banner (probably both will be HQ's?). No Sisters (who probably will get split too?).

A bit lackluster tbh. Why just 1/3rd of the rules? Either prospero is sooner than we got told, or so late that we will already have 8th out when it hits lol >.>

Ok, so with Fearless and EW they're not quite the beasts they are in the 40k rules, and 165 points for 3 feels about right.

As someone who's about to face a pile of these guys in a Zone Mortalis campaign, I don't really relish the thought of re-rollable inv saves in combat. Given that they've now lost Fearless, maybe I'll need to rethink my 'Just tie them up with a Contemptor Cortus' idea.

I foresee Phosphex Medusas making a comeback.

They're going to rock ZM.

Normal Medusa is probably better. Will ID them.

Could you repost a better pic of their fluff? smile.png

I am not the source I'm afraid!

It was shared by another Frater in the NRA and apparently hails from Dakka.

30k Sisters rules are next month's WD it seems.

Does anyone think Forge World will do an upgrade kit with robed legs? Hopefully capes too. Right now they look great but lack their iconic red touches.

I'd say the robes and such may be on a FW unit that they will make - maybe like a Command Squad or something?

I see I am not the only one mildly confused that 30k and 40k have fairly different rules. I want to say the 30k rules seem better, but I am mildly disappointed that 30k runs in multiples of 3 but there are 5 guys in the kit and you can't mix/ match in 30k.

I'm quite looking forward to giving them a shot in 30k. smile.png

I'm honestly not sure what people expect when they say they're disappointed. They have decent stats, some good skills, very good armour and nifty weapons. This is a game that has to balance those things with points costs. If you make them better, the points go up. If they're too expensive, they'll probably see less play.

It would have been nice if the spear had rending as well. Because they can quite easily become bogged down if up against anything with a 2+ sv, especially if charged.

Edit. It's also a shame that swords/spears can't be mixed.
