Indefragable
Gents, I have been using the following guide ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u7e4_-oRMtI ) to paint power swords, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a guide for painting the Power Mauls (or similiar style weapon) of the bullgryns? Almost every guide demonstrates swords, but the power maul is a different shape with different surfaces, Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327221-powered-maul/ Share on other sites
WarriorFish
I'm sending this to the Forge where you'll get more help, but at the basic level you could treat the maul "sides" as short, fat swords? UltraRich
Ive done one where it radiates out from the studs on the ends. Its in my thread but if you want pics or a guide let me know Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327221-powered-maul/#findComment-4543830 Share on other sites
NiceGuyAdi
This may be a little off-piste from where you're thinking, but I found this tutorial interest interesting. Painting on Lightning Weapon Effects The trouble with the Bullgryn maul painted the way I've seen it done is it just looks like a big metal club rather than a power weapon. This was the result of my first go at it: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327221-powered-maul/#findComment-4543833 Share on other sites
Brother Pheidias
What I did was paint the maul metal, and then highlight the edges with traditional power-weapon colours (various shades of blue through to pure white). It ended up looking like this:http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u490/Revnesko/WH40K/Imperial%20Fists/DSC02118_zps31ce1f7d.jpghttp://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u490/Revnesko/WH40K/Imperial%20Fists/DSC02121_zpscb469e67.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327221-powered-maul/#findComment-4543925 Share on other sites
UltraRich
Heres mine I did a glow out effect from the studs on the end http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/IMG_6411_zpslowfxlqy.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/327221-powered-maul/#findComment-4543962 Share on other sites

What I like about it is that it maintains the weighty, wrought-iron look that a mace (IMO) should have while also showing that it is powered. Power swords are interesting because they can be made to look either like a metal sword that is bristling with power, or a sword made of energy. Think of the difference between a sword that is on fire vs a sword of fire. Power axes are completely different, IMO, because they have to be a blade that is powered because otherwise it doesn't make sense. You can have a lightsaber, but not a lightsaber-axe, if you get what I mean. Maces fall into a tricky zone, since the whole idea with them is the weight and mass of them creating their damaging effect. A "lightsaber-mace" would then be rather lightweight, thus ruining the whole concept (IMO). Yours captures that happy medium ground perfectly! Heres mine I did a glow out effect from the studs on the end http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f372/rbrewster101/IMG_6411_zpslowfxlqy.jpg LIkewise I like yours as well since it also captures the idea of the weight of the mace while also showing it is more than just a CQW. I also like how you did the brute shield. That is something I have been agonizing over as well. Thanks, Gents! AndrewChristlieb
I did a couple power flails for my Templars. I just went with the same design as my other power weapons on the heads.
