Some new Flesh tearers

Mortarion

Recommended Posts

Some of you might remember my Flesh tearers, but I guess most of you do not since I have not posted in this forum for a long time and most of my old threads have been archived. I have painted stuff for other armies and recently stuff for other games, since I don't really like the state 40k is currently in where some units and armies are way, waayyyy better then others.

But with the release of Angel's blade I thought I would paint some new stuff to be able to use the formations. I currently have around 6000 points of painted Flesh tearers and used to have 6 Troops choices in the old codex, but I still can't field a Core choice. laugh.png

To start off, here are some additions to old units.

Some Sanquinary guards to add to one of my existing units.

And together with the old ones:

And some Death company models with jump packs. When I started the army, jump packs were almost mandatory for the Death company. So I built a seven man strong unit. But in the previous codex the jump packs became really expensive, so I built a new unit on foot. And in the current codex the jump packs are back. However, seven models with no fancy weapons do not last long so I built some more.

A regular one.

A power mace.

One with a "Flesh tearer" (Counts as power fist).

I don't know how much stuff I'll paint, but hopefully some new things. A Death company chaplain is first in line.

Ah, Mortarion! I guess I'm one of the few who remember your glorious Flesh Tearers from all the way back when you started painting them... Must've been a good six/seven years ago now. I'm glad to see that you're still painting them and that they still look so good. :tu:

Is there a place where you post your other projects by any chance? I'd love to see the other stuff you work on!

Here are few links for the people only just discovering Mortarion's work:

My Flesh Tearers Army (The one that started it all.)

Heroes of the Flesh Tearers (With the aforementioned Sanguinor.)

Flesh Tearer Terminators (A mix of converted Space Hulk TDA and regular TDA. All brutal.)

Flesh Tearers Rifleman Dreadnought (With a massive freehand banner.)

Librarian Furioso (With another massive freehand banner.)

Flesh Tearers Land Raider (A beauty of a beast. More freehand goodness.)

Flesh Tearers Sanguinary Guard (A refreshing take on the Golden Boys.)

More Sanguinary Guard (More of the above.)

Flesh Tearer Drop Pod (What it says on the tin.)

Flesh Tearer Razorback (With converted twin-heavy flamer turret.)

I'm probably missing a couple of threads but you should be able to get a good idea of how happy I am to see Mortarion back on the board with new Flesh Tearer goodness with the links I've posted. :D

Thanks everybody! Surprised (and happy) to see so many replies.smile.png

@Greymane: Sure. Scroll down a little bit in this post and there are some better images of that model.

@Inquisitor Kravin: I don't have a complete tutorial, but I can give you a short description of the idea behind them. It's the same principles as simplified NMM. Each surface has a transition from dark blue to white and each adjecent surface has the opposite transition. So, for example, if one surface has white at the top and blue at the bottom, the surface next to it would have blue at the top and white at the bottom. And then I added the lightning bolts on top of that. I used one dark blue paint, a normal blue, a light blue and finally white in lots of thin, watered-down layers.

@Rayner: I do have a Sanguinor model that I like. Here is a link.

@Dosjetka: Thank you for the kind words and the links. I been thinking about gather links to all the different threads, but I didn't realise just how many different threads my Flesh tearers were divided between. And to complete the list, here are a few more links:

Land speeders

Storm raven

Death company in pod

Assault squad on foot

Predator

Devastators

As for my other projects, I do have some old ones on this forum, but since my recent work involve filthy Xenos and even other games I don't think I am allowed to post links to them. But I guess I could PM them to you if you want.

First new unit ready - a Death company chaplain.

I normally like to convert my models to make them more personal, but sometimes it can be a nice change to just build something straigth out of the box. And since I really like the new DC Chaplain model I just built it as it was apart from some battle damage. With the painting I used the same colour scheme as my other chaplains, a darkened down version of the standard FT colour scheme. I originally intended to paint the "flayed muscle" parts red, but it became too much red and the model ended up looking like a sanguinary guard. So I painted them black/dark grey instead and I'm quite happy with the result even though it ended up being an inverted version of the Eavy metal paintjob.

Thank you! To hear that one has been a source of inspiration is really nice to hear. To me that is a great part of this hobby - different painters and modellers gaining inspiration from each other to constantly evolve themselves.

@Xenith: I agree that the many different thread can be confusing, but most of the older ones are either closed, archived or old enough that it would be considered threadomancy to post something in them. So from now on, I'll make my updates in this post and keep the collected links as reference.

Banners for power armoured infantry are from different Marine kits. Banners for terminators are from WHFB goblins. And the dreadnought banners are plasticard and greenstuff. see this image for an example:

Awesome, thanks! I'll have to up my GS work, cloth/fabric has always been tricky for me.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had a lot of things to do at work and in real life, so progress has been slow, but now I finally have a new model finished. In order to field the Death company formation you need a DC dread. I've had plans to build one for a long time, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/DCDread01_zpsaagqpwxx.jpg

It is painted in the same style as my regular Death company. Grey with even more battle damage than usual. If you charge headlong into the enemy, your armour will not look clean and new after.  Unfortunately, the photo is quite bad as some of the highlighting and shading seems to disappear.
For the banner, I went with the usual mix between horror movie poster and religious painting, with a bit of heavy metal estetics thrown in. The words on the banner "In Death Salvation" are supposed to have multiple meanings. For the enemy, seeing the image of the masked angel and those words, it will probably just seem like he is a religious fanatic who thinks he will "save" them by killing them. For the "pilot" of the Dreadnought it represent his chance of redemption. The Black rage has taken its hold and he is doomed. But if he can just use the strength it gives him against his enemies, their deaths may turn his last moments into something glorious, and thus earning him salvation. But in reality, the words also mean that death will most likely be the only salvation for the poor soul who now suffers from Black rage.

The saws instead of fists is an idea I have had for a long time. Since I use that on power armoured marines, it would be cool to try it out on a dreadnought. Originally I had planned to have a Chaos cultist who had been cut in half lying on the base. But that had two problems. The first was that it would require lots of blood and gore to look realistic. And in the end I felt that it would look less brutal and more splatter moive than I wanted. The second problem was that a cultist is so far from an even matchup for a death company dreadnought, It's not anything special to kill a cultist who never had a chance of hurting the dreadnought. So I decided to use the chopped of arm from some kind of mutant monstrosity instead.
I am really pleased with the fresh blood and it is a bit darker in reality than this photo.

And then I added the lightning bolts on top of that.

I used about four different colours to build up the gradients. Lots of thin, watered-down layers is the key.
