Rhino Armoured Recovery Vehicle

I've been bitting at another conversion project and finally got to the painting stage and primed it with a couple of coats of Vallejo White primer pushed through my beloved old  Badger  200.

Its ripped off from various real world ARVs and towing vehicles.

Heres a pic from earlier on showing how it will go together.

I'm still looking for some Rhino tracks, IG vehicle mounted spades and picks and some imperial style boxes to go on the mudguard areas.  The A frame will be held up by a couple of fixed cables running from the bar across the top rear of the rear cabin.

Cheers!  Embarrassingly i started a thread about it back in March when I last touched it!  Oops.  Since the spraying booth takes up the entire work bench area and I can't do anything dust making while i'm spraying Ill bash on and get it painted up ASAP.

Cheers!  'Got a bit more painting done.  will get the second coats of black on the ground anchor etc tomorrow and get the masking tape off.  We got a pint bottle of Vallejo Matte acrylic resin varnish on Saturday and after trying it out on some barriers i put a coat on the ARV.  I am really impressed with it.  once ive finished adding the non metalic details I'll put a second coat on, give it a day then do the metalics, gloss the glass bits and then do the weathering/ chipping.

I've had no end of trouble with photobucket but it seams to be working now so here she is, pretty much finished less a few bits like the pintle gun, tool box etc.

The panit jobs a bit brighter than you would expect but tha'ts intentional as I will, once its had 24 hrs to dry,  be heavily weathered with Mig powders, soot around the exhausts, I think its called European light dust in all the cracks and crevices and dried mud on the tracks, wheels and undersides.  I had a go at streaking for the first time with some AK stuff meant to go over panzer grey but I think i under played it.

When its complete I'll get out thereal camera and take a few decent shots of it.  The old ipad ones are awful.

Very neat. I don't really "get it" ...but its pretty dang cool. That metal hub-cap on the rhino-door strikes me as "off" somehow. Is it painted or just kinda there? You gonna whip up a mini-diorama for this bad boy or is it just a ("I'm really an ork under all this ceramite" - one-off kinda deal?) Cool tank anywho!

The round object where the side door should be is actually a spare bobbin of cable , inside the rear cabin there's a matching mechanism that  would extend the bobbin out wards where it could be picked up by the crane arm.

A while back there was a rumour that GW was going to bring out a Command vehicle ( which they did), a ambulance and a recovery vehicle.   There are rules for 2  IG recovery vehicles, the Atlas and the Trojan i think they are called, FW did make them and i rather fancied making the SM equivalent .  Real world ARVs are striking looking vehicles and after doing 20 rhino hulls I needed to do something a bit different.   Yeah, just a bit of fun really.

Anyway it's done now, unfortunately I cant take a decent pic of it, they all turn washed out looking, the exhausts are actually soot coloured and the blue colour most of it is is basically Ultramarine.   I was going for a dirty tired looking vehicle.   Hopefully when i get some ill retrofit it with some spare track links, tools and external stores.

When I get another Rhino hull Ill be making a ramp style bridgelayer.

Cheers!

Cheers folks!   To keep in line with the naming conventions we have decided ( unless its already been used ) to call it a Hercules class Armoured Recovery Vehicle.  If someones already done it on a Mk I Rhino chassis ( ive not found owt on line) this will be a Hercules Mk II ARV.

'Need to get a cheap Rhino to take apart to start on the Churchill ARK rip off I'd like to do .  Some folk have done lovely Rhino Bridge layers and there's some neat ideas i can crib for mine.  To be honest i just need the tracks, 4 side panels and the rest will be made from plasticard and rod.  Ive a choice, make it wide enough to take a Landraiders tracks, have the path ways sticking out over  the rhino wide hull or have the paths on pistons so they open up to be wide enough to take the wider vehicle.

Land Raiders can drive underwater, so a bridger their size probably isn't necessary.

When tactically appropriate it isn't necessary, but it is still risky, and probably slower.

A decent sized gully will slow down any vehicle and risk flipping, bogging down, or throwing a track on a boulder perhaps.

After an initial spearhead secures the far side of the river bridging can be performed to bolster the logistic support to advancing units... which could very well mean more rapidly deploying/redeploying land raiders.
