3D printing in Warhammer

Recommended Posts

Lucky old me suddenly has access to rather a high quality 3D printer.

I was wondering what uses it might have in warhammer. To be clear I'm not suggesting printing out models or doing anything to infringe on GW's intellectual property. But I think there must be plenty of other uses.

Here's some ideas Ive had:

I'll be able to get access to a 3D scanner so I might be able to scan my own head and print it out at the right scale. I don't know if the detail will work that scaled down though but it would be pretty cool to be able to lead the army in person.

For my deathwatch army I was thinking of trying to print some centurion shoulder pads with the =][= logo and the embossed writing. Maybe ditto for some dreadnought left shoulders or scout shoulders.

Things like the forgeworld rhino/landraider doors, obviously ones that don't already exist for sale.

Oh and lastly for the deathwatch some bolters with underslung shot gun for days when I feel like being a dick with the rules.

You guys got any cool ideas? Or does anyone use 3D printing in their hobby?

Terrain. There are a number of companies online that offers high resolution plans that allow you to print out buildings, ruins, walls, castles, etc.. Besides being lower cost than buying terrain kits, it also makes them one piece. So if they ever fall off the table you don't have to worry about them breaking into a million bits.

the personal model head is a fun idea.

but if you've got a high quality printer don't waste the resin (assuming it's resin rather than filament) on terrain... print characters where the resolution actually makes a difference.

even if it's just shoulder pads and weapons, though there is extremely easy access to models for just about anything from infantry to vehicles to weapons and gear.

i print terrain because i have a low-end printer (and can fill strata with plaster, paint etc) and wish i had a high-end for print characters.

Well i've been playing around with some 3D models

And here it is being cocked. I know it doesn't quite make sense the cocking mechanism but i think for this purpose it works and it allows me to have some variety in posing as marines cock their shotgun

Finally heres a version with a scope attached. I've also taken a couple of the shells out of the clip. when i print them i'll make a variety with different numbers of shells taken out etc

Shoulder pads and extra icons see the obvious choices. Especially if you are not doing one of the main chapters or DW.

Possibly alternative weapons? stylised swords/axes etc for a bit more flavour? Bits for meltafists for DW so you can add them to normal powerfists for a bit more variety of position? if you can make them so you can easily put them on/off with magnets even better.

I have this crazy plan of doing Dawn of War style buildings if I ever get access to a 3D-printer and enough consumables.

hey ciler,

sorry for self-referencing here but...

these are epic scale and i wouldn't consider them in 28mm. way to much plastic.... unless i had a wheelbarrow full of spare plastic perhaps smile.png

just the time alone to print out big slabs of plastic is not insignificant, and imo i'd use cut mdf instead, then glue on gubbins and widgets.

i'd definitely applaud anyone actually making 28mm building prints though.

@henrywalker: is it me or is the underslung weapon more a grenade-launcher bore (especially given the size of the shells on the side of the bolter body)? i'm not overly familiar with shotguns in 40k setting.

Nice work, but shells should face upwards. Seal doesn't sit that tight inside and running marine would risk emptying them. Also, that underslung barrel is way too big, shotguns meant for precision firing actually have slightly narrowing barrel to keep the load together while accelerating. To give example, here's one futuristic shotgun from Aliens similar to yours:

Barrel is pretty much the same diameter as main one, just smooth-bore and with thinner walls, plus a shell tube above barrel.

You're absaloutely right. I think I might make the bore a lot smaller but not sharing the outer diameter as much. I like it being chunky and I want it different enough from the bolter

Thanks (you too @pauljam)

I've considered using Shapeways' new High Detail Black Acrylate to produce a conversion kit to make Dark Eldar Kabalite Warriors into Sisters of Battle, ala KrautScientist's Sister conversion. Alas, my 3D-fu is weak and there's rumours of new plastic Sisters...so there goes that plan.

One other thing, your shotgun with the pump forward is ready to shoot. The pump back is being cocked.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the part where you pointed that out already.

However, the model looks great. I have an ok 3d printer, but I can't get anywhere near the resolution for miniatures. Terrain isn't hard though. If you can't get a resolution that you are happy with consider putting it on shapeways.
