Iron Warriors 4th Grand Company, 2nd Siege Company

Kanis Dominus was born of Terra, one of the original Astartes to serve alongside the Thunder Warriors during the latter days of the Unification Wars in his youth bearing witness to the destruction of the Thunder Warriors at the Battle of Mount Ararart. This was his first taste of betrayal in the name of duty, something that would forge his view of what he would come to later see as the truth of Imperial Truth.

While often seen as his peers as an effective and capable warrior his reluctance to let go of the past hampered his rise through the ranks, his taking of the Regimental icon as his heraldry being something that his critics within the Legion were keen to point out at any opportunity.

When Perturbo decided to punish his men for their failings with the drawing of lots to decide who should be executed as punishment Kanis had been selected. This is something that he personally would see as being done to rid the Legion of the older mindset of many of his brothers, but more to the point took it as a personal attack on himself that he had been singled out with purpose.

When they came for him he had just returned from a brutal siege of compliance, long hours of inactivity as they stood in their trenches waiting for the siege guns of the enemy to be silenced before they rushed the enemy defences brutally slaying all that opposed them. As he was often inclined to do Kanis had made straight for the practice cages to unwind and let out his frustrations to clear his mind. It had been his most trusted brothers that had taken upon it themselves to administer Perturbo's punishment, four of his most loyal men. Kanis slew them without a second thought, as they tried to explain their actions as though passing sentence he struck without warning or remorse killing all four of his battle plate armoured brothers and two others that had run to their aid. Something in his actions must have impressed his Primach as he was to be spared unlike his former comrades who would find no peace in death and who would be re-purposed for a darker and more insidious role.

Kanis Dominus -WIP

This is still a wip but the general feel of the model is coming together. Kanis is basically old guard and old school, his long service in the name of the Imperium which should have seen him risen in the ranks of his brothers has been hindered by his paranoia and distrust of others which will be clear to see when I get around to making his personal body guard.

The model is make from the Cataphracti legs of the BOC set with the Tartartos front half of the torso and the back half of the MK 4 marines torso with some minor GS work. The rest of the model is just parts from the BoP set.

I'm going for a mid to late great crusade feel for these guys with hopefully a mix of allies to spice things up a bit and try to root the scale in place a bit better.

This is the first tactical squad that I am working on that I may stick Kanis in to bulk out the numbers along with an Apothecary. I can see this being vulnerable to template weapons but to me the huge units really drives home the feel of the Iron Warriors and I would much rather adapt my style of play to the feel of the Legion rather than adapt the Legion to my style of play.

Ideally I would like to push this up to a full one hundred marines but will see how it goes.

Very WIP at the moment, I've just started to wet brush the models which I will then go over and tidy up before working on the washes and detailing. I'm using the forge world transfers for these guys and simply going over them with Micro sol to get that nice flat finish.

As these guys are siege troops I want to try and reflect that with my choice of vehicles to support them. The Leviathan is perfect for this and I have a Malcador I am working on as support. I may get some Basilisks to back them up a bit or some Vindicators but for the most part I want masses of infantry.

Lastly as a test model I've put this guy together to act as militia, I like the idea of the IW throwing these guys at the strongest defences of the enemy and now that the armour they wear is an official STC design despite being used in a xenos army by cultists this gives it a very Imperial feel while being a simple conversion at the same time.

Thanks mate. Yeah I think Iron Warriors have always been a popular legion and the new plastic mk3 armour might see us with a resurgence in the siege army types like IW and Fists I think which is never a bad thing.

Iron Warriors were my second edition chaos marine army mainly because the paint scheme has always been very simple to do, for these guys it's lead belcher with nuln oil over the top then I use watered down lead belcher washes to even it out and restore some of the metal. Very simple technique, I then highlight and use brown washes in areas to grime it up.

For me the Iron Warriors are one of the more unfortunate Legions, they still turn with the others but it feels like they were driven to it rather than openly rebelling because of attrition and the nature of the warfare they engaged in. I think Horus used that to his advantage in the end.

Thanks mate, I always have in the back of my mind "how can I do this so I can show others how to do it too?" so try to look for the most readily usable parts and sometimes it is this thought process that leads to a light bulb moment. I have bashed my head on a wall for quite a while with truescaling which is part of why I've not been posting much of late but I am confident I can get a tutorial up that should mean if anyone that wants to have a go at this style of marine should be able to quite easily. The MK3 plastics just tipped my hand in the end and gave me a way to actually do this to practically achieve this, I'd much rather do something that others can reproduce than make something that some feel is out of reach.

Personally speaking it's the simplicity of these guys and subtly that has made them so enjoyable to make, first time in years I've genuinely enjoyed making models again and hope to push for a full company eventually. For the time being it's the Praetor (that I am tempted to have as a first sergeant in background terms), twenty man tac squad, ten man support squad and a second ten man tac squad.

What I hope to achieve is an force that can double for regular 40k games, so the tac squad becomes a regular csm squad, the support squad can be broken down into Havoc squads and the single ten man tac squad then can become chosen. I just need a fast attack choice then and I have the makings of a chaos warband. This should give me a core for both 30k and 40k games then.

Well, this will definitely be something to keep an eye on. Wonderous work as always, Doghouse. While I'm not big on truescaling myself, you, Apologist, and KBA always manage to make it look really good. Can't wait to see what comes next. :)

Amazing truescale marines as always Doghouse. Sorely tempted to make up some more legionaries and paint them in the livery of the IVth because of this :).

I don't know if it's just me but the shot of your captain next to the leviathan makes me think of it as a regular contemptor. Looking forward to seeing you bring more of Perturabo's sons to the fray.

Thanks mate, I did contemplate making it into a regular Contemptor by converting the gun into a twin linked weapon removing a couple of barrels but to be honest is such a really nice model that it seemed a shame to cut it up. :)

So my reaction to the first post basically went like this:

"Oh wow! Doghouse is doing some more Truescales! Excellent! And they're Iron Warriors! Excellence Squared!

"Man, that first Marine he's done as a focal character looks pretty sweet. I can't wait to see how the rest of the force turns out - and what's this about a bodyguard?

"...wait ... you mean there's MORE of them?! LIKE, AN ENTIRE TWENTY MAN SQUAD MORE?!"

"Man, that's an excellent Mortal Auxilia kitbash!"

So basically, my jaw kept lowering and my eyebrows kept raising with every passing mouse-scroll.

Seriously excellent stuff. As a fellow truescale IVth enthusiast, I'll be following this log with interest.

P.S. where's the bald head on the second truescale you painted up from?

Yeah that is the good part about it because according to the genestealer cult stuff this is an STC template outfit which means it is an Imperial design which is great news for conversions. What I would like to do is make them into ship ratings, the guys that defend the ship in times of need so a small allied contingent would work quite well with the Astartes and allow me to throw in some human characters using the militia rules.

For now I am focusing on getting the Astartes done, I've just added an Apothecary and I'm working on a second ten man tac team to give me the very basic legal gaming force for both 30k and 40k. I'm using both codexes to try and match up the models so I can use them in both systems. So the plan is:

Twenty man tactical squad which double chaos space marine squad(s).

Ten man tactical squad which doubles as 40k chosen.

Praetor which doubles as a chaos lord.

Ten man tactical support squad with either plasma or melta guns which will be split into two havoc squads for 40k and an Apothecary will become the second champion.

Then I just need a Raptor squad or bikes to get the requirements for the Traitor's hate chaos warband detachment.

I may look into getting three Demolishers but that depends on whether they look too small or not. I may scratch build some vehicles using the scale pictures in the 3rd ed space marine codex. Right now I'm working on the infantry with the goal being about 50 models or so to begin with.

After that I can use plug in units from either era depending on what system I am using.

While I want to keep these guys as pure IW as possible I am working on a few units that I can "plug in" to the army for thematic reasons. The first such model is one I have thrown together using spare bits to create a Chaplain of the Word Bearers. The idea behind this guy is that it is a time when Lorgar is sending his men out to the other Legions to sow the seeds of corruption in the name of the Lodges. I want something that stands out as a stark contrast to the IW's mass produced feel with more advanced weapons and armour which I feel would appeal to a force that is under supplied with the promise of much more advanced armour and weaponry. In my mind it's kind of like an army using world war two level equipment suddenly having this guy turn up promising modern weapons and tanks showing them how things might be under an Empire ruled by Horus and how the Emperor has betrayed them.

Kanis does not trust this guy (or anyone for that matter) but the promise of better equipment has caught his attention. The Chaplain plays on his fears of betrayal to try and twist him and his men to the cause of Horus.

The Apothecary

Although just a WIP at the moment I want to capture the uniform feel of the army so I am not straying too much from the original design of the armour of the rest of the Astartes in this army. These guys are first and foremost warriors of the Legion, expected to fight alongside their brothers but at the same time be there to patch up the injured. I'm trying to take it a step away from the more specialised role of the modern Apothecaries and have added simple pouches to represent the tools he has at his disposal to tend to the injured and retrieve the geneseed of the fallen.

I've roughly started painting him mainly as a brief break from the production line I have on the go at the moment, being ten men into the second tactical squad. I still have to continue blending in the white and scratches before I tackle the rest of the armour and the lenses on the helm. I like the idea of the white marking him out as a field medic and the pouches showing he is some sort of specialist.

The apothecary has a very rogue trader feel to it, making it perfectly fit into your heresy theme.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would love to see a shot of Kanis' back, just to see how you managed to make the mk4 fit with the tartaros armour.
